Death mourned:
A meeting of the Desh Bhagat Committee, Punjab, was held here on Saturday under the chairmanship of Mr Satya Pal Baghi to mourn the death of freedom fighter Mrs Durga Devi (92), who died at Ghaziabad on Friday. Two minutes silence was also observed. The committee unanimously passed a resolution demanding setting up of a memorial of Mrs Durga Devi at Hussainiwala.

JE held: A Junior Engineer, Bhim Singh, of the Telecom Department has been arrested while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 500 from a resident of Dharamkot, according to the SP vigilance bureau, Mr Hardial Singh Mann. He said a case had been registered against him.

JALANDHAR
Small savings scheme:
The National Savings Organisation, Jalandhar region, has celebrated "sanchayaika day" at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Adarsh Nagar, here on Friday. A cultural programme was also organised on the occasion. Mr K.L. Katyal, Deputy Regional Director, said 409 schools with 81,750 members had been contributing Rs 10.60 lakh per month under the scheme.

Poppy seized:
The local police on Thursday arrested Surjit Singh, a resident of Charik village, and seized 40 kg of poppy husk from him according to Mr Shard Chauhan, SSP. He said a case had been registered against him.

One killed: Kulwant Singh, a resident of Sekha Kalan village, was killed on the spot when a jeep he was driving collided with a tractor near Baghapurana, 15 km from here, on Thursday. The other occupants of the jeep were admitted to a hospital.

Electrocuted: Seeto, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was electrocuted while repairing tubewell at Kotla Rai village on Thursday. The body was sent for post-mortem.

Committee:
Mrs Santosh Chaudhary, MP, has been included in a six-member high-level introspection committee constituted by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for conducting in-depth study into causes of party's electoral reverses during recently held general elections. Mr A.K Antony and Mr Mani Shanker Ayer are chairman and convener of the committee. The committee will submit its report on November 30.

Visit: A six-member inspection committee constituted to oversee the implementation of traffic directions by the Punjab and Haryana High Court will visit here on October 22, according to Mr Vijay Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala.

SONEPAT
Centre opened:
A sewing centre set up by Disha at Durga Basti here was opened on Friday by Ms Krishana, Municipal Councillor. Ms Geeta Kathuria, Director, Disha, said another dance training centre had been started at D.C. Colony.

Welcome: Mr I.D. Swami, Union Minister of State for Home, was welcomed by BJP workers at Bahalgarh Chowk on the G.T. road, 10 km from here, on Friday. He asked the party workers to propagate the programmes and policies of the Vajpayee government.

Cyclist injured: Krishan Bahadur, a cyclist, was injured when he was hit by a car on the Sonepat-Bahalgarh road near a petrol pump, on Saturday. The police has registered a case.

Businessman robbed: Four car-borne miscreants looted Rs 2,000 from a businessman in subzi mandi here on Thursday at gunpoint. A case has been registered.

4 injured: Four persons were injured in a road accident near Nangal village, 15 km from here, on Thursday. The injured were admitted to a hospital.

SIRSA
Three killed:
Subhash Chander, Mohinder Singh and Hawa Singh of Jodhka village succumbed to injuries at the local Civil Hospital on Thursday. According to sources, the deceased met with an accident on the GT Road, near Moriwala village. The Ding police has registered a case.

One held: Naib Singh was arrested on Thursday in a criminal case registered against him under Sections 498A, 406, 506 and 34, IPC, on a charge of harassing a women for dowry. In a complaint Mrs Rajvinder Kaur of Habuana village alleged that she was harassed and beaten by the accused for bringing inadequate dowry. The police has already arrested Bhan Singh, husband of Mrs Rajvinder Kaur.

Sentenced: Bachittar Singh of Mithri village in Sirsa district was sentenced to two years and fine of Rs 3000 by Mr Sanjay Khanduja, Judicial Magistrate (Class 1), Mandi Dabwali on Saturday. He had beaten up and injured Ms Jasmail Kaur on August 29, 1992, when she was collecting fire wood at Mithri village.

Succumbed: Satpal Singh of Mandi Dabwali, 60 km from here succumbed to his burns at the local Civil Hospital here on Friday. He was admitted to the hospital on October 10.

Dead: Zile Singh, Deputy Director, Agriculture Department, Sirsa district, died here on Friday due to heart attack. The Sirsa Pesticides, Insecticide and Seed Dealers Association mourned his death.

Paddy procurement: Mr Amita Jha, Deputy Commissioner, visited new anaj mandi here on Friday and inspected the paddy procurement. He was assisted by officers of other purchasing agencies. He also met officials of the Market Committee and other purchase agencies.

One killed: Sarbati (45) of Gudia Khera village killed on the spot and two injured in a road accident on the GT road on Friday. According to sources, a jeep in which the victims were travelling collided with a car, near Bhaudeen village. The dead was cremated after post-mortem.

NURPUR
Resentment:
Resentment prevails among residents of Kotla town of Jawali subdivision against the move of the administration to shift the local office of the Assistant Engineer of the HPSEB to Tarlokpur. Mr Yog Raj, a pradhan of the Kotla Gram Panchayat, said the office had been functioning here for the past 18 years. It is learnt that the office is being shifted to Tarlokpur in order to help an influential person who had proposed to rent out his building for the office. The residents have threatened to launch an agitation if the office was shifted.

Memorandum: The Nurpur block samiti at its meeting on Thursday criticised the government for undertaking development works in the rural areas through contract and ignoring the representatives of the samiti. The samiti sent a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Kangra. The samiti also demanded to build a mortuary in the local Civil Hospital as the present mortuary was far away from the hospital.
