Los Angeles quake
LOS
ANGELES, Oct 16 (DPA) An earthquake jolted the Los
Angeles area of southern California this morning, the
Cable News Network (CNN) reported. The quake measured 7
on the Richter scale and had its epicentre in southern
California. There were no immediate reports of possible
injuries or damage. Eyewitnesses said the earth shook
massively for at least 15 seconds at about 0300 hours
(local time).Storm

CALCUTTA,
Oct 16 (UNI) A Cyclonic storm packing winds of
speed 70-80 kmph is set to hit the southern district and
coastal areas of West Bengal tomorrow, the 'Maha
Ashtami" day, the weather office said here today.
Director R.N. Goldar said a low pressure near the Andaman
Sea intensified into a depression over the east central
Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas yesterday.
10 killed in
Somalia
MOGADISHU,
Oct 16 (Reuters) Gunmen attacked a large UN food
convoy in Somalia, and 10 persons were killed and at
least 12 wounded in the ensuing battle, witnesses said
today. The convoy came under attack yesterday near
Mahadday in the troubled region of Middle Shabelle, about
110 km north of here.
Kattabomman
NEW DELHI,
Oct 16 (UNI) The Postal Department has brought out
a commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of the
200th death anniversary of Veerapandia Kattabomman, a
great patriot of Tamil Nadu and one among the earliest
martyrs of the freedom struggle. Kattabomman ascended the
throne of Panchalankuruchi at an early age in 1790. He
refused the dictates of the then East India Company and
denounced the revenue settlement introduced by it.
Arrest ordered
TEHERAN,
Oct 16 (Reuters) An Iranian court today ordered
the arrest of a leading pro-reform editor whose newspaper
was recently banned for questioning Islamic principles,
his colleagues said. The newspapers publisher had
already been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison
because of his role in printing an article questioning
Islamic views on capital punishment. One of the
journalists said editor Mashallah Shamsolvaezin had
refused to attend a court hearing today, prompting the
hardline court to issue the warrant.
