Suicide by Palsora boy

Chandigarh Oct 16 — A 16-year-old resident of Palsora village committed suicide in his school here this morning.

According to police sources, Amit Kumar, a Class X student of Jawahar Navodya Vidalaya in Sector 25, was found hanging by a rope in the bathroom of the school by some other students.

The deceased had reportedly been disturbed for some time. While further investigations are on, the necessary formalities under Section 174 of the CrPC have been completed by a magistrate.

Cyclist killed

An unidentified cyclist was hit and killed by an unidentified vehicle on the dividing road of Sectors 49 and 50 near a wine shop late last night. A case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered at the south police station.

Liquor seized

The police has arrested three persons from separate places in the city and seized 50 pouches and 15 bottles of liquor from them.

Jhumi Devi, a resident of Dadu Majra, was arrested from the colony for possessing 50 pouches of liquor.

Kirpal Singh and Balbir Singh, residents of Bari Gendwa village in the Fatehgarh Sahib district, were arrested from the Faidan barrier with 15 bottles of whisky.

Separate cases have been registered under Sections 61-1-14 of the Excise Act.

Eve-teaser held

Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Bageri village of the Faridkot district, was arrested for eve-teasing from near Nirankari Bhavan in Sector 21. A case under Section 294 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 19 police station.

Cop assaulted

Krishan and Shamsher Singh, both autorickshaw drivers, have been arrested for assaulting Constable Rohtas Kumar who was on duty at the pre- paid booth at the railway station.

According to sources, they picked up a quarrel with the cop, forced their way into the cabin, assaulted him and damaged the pre- paid machine by pouring water in it. They also threatened the constable with dire consequences.

A case under Sections 426, 448, 341 and 506 of the IPC has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Gamblers held

The local police has nabbed eight persons for gambling in Sector 22. According to the police, Ravinder, Kamal, and Harvinder were caught when they were gambling near the Polyclinic, while Anil, Harpal, Parvinder, Vijay and Rajinder were arrested as they were gambling near the Sector 22 market.

Complaint registered

The local police has registered a complaint against Mr Karnail Singh, a resident of Krishangarh village in Chandigarh, following a collision between a car (CH-01-7182) and a scooter (HR-07-B-0047) in Sector 2.

A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered in the police station of Sector 5. However, nobody was seriously injured in the collision.

PINJORE

Power theft

The local police has booked Surjit Singh and Lavinder Kumar for an alleged power theft.

A case under Section 39 of the Electricity Act has been registered at the Pinjore police station.

YPS students entertain

SAS NAGAR Oct 16 — The junior wing of the local Yadavindra Public School presented a colourful variety entertainment programme here this evening.

Nearly 570 students participated in the show which began with a shabad, “Lakh Khushian Patshayeian”, followed by “Que Sera, Sera ... ” by the junior wing choir. Ms Neelam Man Singh Chowdhry, a prominent theatre personality, was the chief guest.

‘Grandpa’s Farm’ (Class I) provided good amusement with children dressed as ducks, cows, sheep and other animals, producing the accompanying animal sounds.

A message that God’s gifts are to be preserved was effectively put forth by students of Class II in the item ‘Conservation’. ‘Bobby’ (also Class II) portrayed the loneliness of a child whose parents are away from home. A Hindi Play, ‘Baat Ka Batangad’ (Class IV) focussed on a quarrel among villagers who did not know the reason behind loud sounds disturbing the area.

‘The Hole In The Sock’ (Class IV) provided more entertainment. In its, a king was unable to find anyone to darn the big hole in the royal sock. A contest ensured with a winner a princess ultimately marrying the king.

The ‘Weatherman On Trial’ (Class V) was among the interesting items, wherein the weatherman was accused of being a spoil report but was finally acquitted by a jury whose verdict was that he did more good than harm to humanity.

Among the other items were ‘Circus’, ‘Gypsy Dance’, ‘Akbar and Birbal’ and bhangra.

Jaspal Bhatti shooting in city

CHANDIGARH Oct 16 — After a-month-and-a-half-long tour of the UK, the USA and Canada with leading bollywood stars, Jaspal Bhatti is back in the city, shooting his new programme for the Doordarshan. The starcast with him on the tour included Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Akshay Khanna, Rani Mukherjee and Twinkle Khanna.

Four episodes of a satirical programme on current issues were shot locally today for the national channel. The programme is telecast every Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and is repeated at 7p.m. in the evening on the same day.

The 10-minute programme has three segments — comments by Jaspal Bhatti on current issues, vox-populi conducted by Savita Bhatti and a skit. The earlier skits were shot in Mumbai, but the programme this time features local artists, including Brijesh Ahuja, Prem Kakaria, S.K. Nayar and Vinod Sharma.

The programme directed by Jaspal Bhatti has its title music composed by Chintu Singh and Vinod Sehgal.

Price Watch

Increase in vegetable prices

CHANDIGARH Oct 16 — Prices of a number of vegetables have increased in the local market during the past three days.

Capsicum, priced at Rs 28 a kg in retail market and Rs 130 per 5 kg in wholesale market two days back, could be purchased for Rs 40 per kg in retail market and Rs 170 per 5 kg in wholesale market today. The increase is said to be due to less arrivals from parts of Himachal Pradesh. Lady's finger, which could be purchased for Rs 14 a kg in retail market and Rs 55 per 5 kg in wholesale market last week, could be had for Rs 20 per kg in retail market and Rs 80 per 5 kg in wholesale market. Arrivals of the vegetable have been less from parts of Punjab.

Kachalu was priced at Rs 15 a kg in retail market and Rs 60 per 5 kg in wholesale market. Cauliflower, which could be had for Rs 12 a kg two days back, could be had for Rs 15 in retail market and Rs 60 for per 5 kg in wholesale market today. The price of cabbage went up from Rs 10 to Rs 12 a kg in retail market and from Rs 40 to Rs 50 per 5 kg in wholesale market.

There was no change in the price of carrot as it could be purchased for Rs 40 a kg in retail market and Rs 160 per 5 kg in wholesale market. The price of bittergourd went up from Rs 16 a kg to Rs 20 a kg in retail market and from Rs 60 to Rs 80 per 5 kg in wholesale market.

Ginger became cheaper as its price came down from Rs 40 to Rs 30 a kg in retail market and from Rs 170 to Rs 130 per 5 kg in wholesale market. This was due to fresh arrivals from Himachal Pradesh. There was no change in the price of brinjal as it was priced at Rs 12 a kg.

Squashgourd was priced at Rs 20 a kg. The price of beans increased from Rs 15 to Rs 20 a kg during this period. Gourd was priced at Rs 10 per kg in retail market and Rs 40 per 5 kg in wholesale market.
