Battle for
supremacy begins today SAS Nagar, Oct 9 Onus will be on newcomers Debang Gandhi, M.S.K. Prasad and Vijay Bhardwaj to repay the trust reposed in them by the selectors when India clash with New Zealand in the opener of the three-Test series at the Punjab Cricket Association ground here tomorrow. Bhardwaj, who has been included in the squad in place of former skipper Mohammed Azharuddin will comparatively be a bit relaxed having already one man of the tournament award under his belt in the just-concluded Nairobi four-nation tournament in which he displayed sound temperament and looked a solid middle-order batsman, besides being successful as an off-spinner. Wicketkeeper Prasad has, on occasions, looked quite impressive behind the stumps as well as as a batsman the catch he took diving full-length to his left to dismiss West Indian Brian Lara in the second match of the Toronto Cricket Festival and a valuable knock of 63 runs against South Africa in the Nairobi tournament final when India were in all sorts of trouble, being the high points of his fledgling career so far. Perhaps this was the sort of beginning he needed but he has to go a long way before he is able to displace Barodas Nayan Mongia in Tests. Mongia is superb as far as the prowess behind the stumps is concerned and this factor will definitely be there in Prasads mind as the play starts tomorrow. Ironically, Prasads career virtually came to a premature end in the recent Singapore Challenge cricket tournament when the team management in all its wisdom dropped him from the squad and asked middle order batsman Rahul Dravid to take the responsibility of standing behind the stumps in addition to his primary responsibility as a key batsman for the sake of providing balance to the team. Gandhi, who was earlier selected in the team for the Asian Test Championship final but could not get a chance to bat as India failed to make the grade, would only be too eager for making most of the opportunity knowing full well that Rajasthans Gagan Khoda and Mumbais Wasim Jaffer are also waiting in the wings. Gandhi, who has been a prolific scorer in the recent past, is likely to open the innings in the company of Sadagopan Ramesh, who, in a brief period of time, has established himself as a dependable opening batsman in both versions of the game. Focus, however, will undoubtedly be on the Indian skipper and the worlds best batsman Sachin Tendulkar who will take charge of the team after he was forced to skip Toronto series against the West Indies and the Nairobi tournament on account of his back problem.Expectations from the little champion are always sky high and the cricket buffs would be too keen to see how he marshalls resources at his disposal under another legend Kapil Dev, whose knowledge and natural acumen for the game should stand the team in good stead. Players should be eager to avenge the humiliation they had to face when the team visited New Zealand during last winter. Seam bowler Simon Doull wrecked havoc on the much-vaunted Indian batting in the second Test after the first Test was completely washed away due to rain as Indians made a disastrous start to the tour. All-rounder Chris Cairns made a mockery of the Indian bowling attack, scoring a scintillating century off just 70-odd balls-seventh fastest in the history of one-dayers and the fastest from any New Zealander in the last one-day match at Christchurch which effectively nullified Indias chances of winning the one-day series. Cairns, in fact, tormented India with the bat throughout the tour having earlier made a century in the last Test at Hamilton to thwart Indians in their effort to level the series and salvage some pride. Besides Cairns, the visitors have Craig McMillan, deemed a highly promising young batsman who has the reputation of taking the fight to the rival camp due to his aggressive batting abilities. The presence of skipper Stephen Fleming, Matthew Horne,Nathan Astle and wicketkeeper batsman Adam Parore in the batting and Dion Nash, Shayne OConners and Daniel Vettori in the bowling department besides, of course, their superb fielding makes the Kiwis a formidable opposition. India with the return of Tendulkar and the likes of Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Ajay Jadeja in their ranks to take care of batting and a fresh Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad in addition to the help from veteran Anil Kumble should fancy their chances if they apply themselves well and play to their potential. Kumble, who in all probability, is set to make a comeback will be under pressure to make a fine impression and be among the wickets. But Kumble, once the teams strike bowler along with Srinath, will go all out to see that the bouncy track with a fair amount of grass on it which has the reputation to be an ally of quick bowlers and not the spinners, except perhaps towards the fag end of the contest, does not turn out to be his nemesis. Teams (from): India: Sachin Tendulkar (captain), Sadagopan Ramesh, Debang Gandhi, Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly, Ajay Jadeja,Vijay Bhardwaj, MSK Prasad (wk), Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Sunil Joshi, Harbhajan Singh and Debashish Mohanty. New Zealand: Stephen
Fleming (captain), Matthew Bell, Matt Horne, Craig
McMillan, Nathan Astle, Chris Cairns, Adam Parore (wk),
Dion Nash, Shayne OConners, Daniel Vettori, Chris
Drum, Chris Harris, Andrew Penn, C Spearman and Paul

Tendulkar
sounds optimistic SAS Nagar, Oct 9 Indian skipper Sachin Tendulkar sounded quite philosophical when queried at the nets about the absence of former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin. He quipped: Even great players like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev had to stop at some stage or the other. However we have to concentrate how to play with the 14 players available. At times there will be guys who will not be there, he replied as the former Hyderabad batsman failed to get the nod of selectors after he withdrew from the squad after the World Cup in order to undergo surgery on his injured shoulder. Azharuddin had submitted his fitness certificate to the board duly signed by a doctor in London who performed the surgery. About his back injury the batting maestro replied that he was feeling relieved after the treatment he received in Australia and that he was keen to do well in the current series. He said he had been practising at the nets along with Mumbai players and he felt no discomfort on account of injury. He denied that the team was at any disadvantage as it was playing Test matches after a fairly long break. The visitors are palpably on a high after registering a historic victory over England in Tests in the just-concluded away series. Tendulkar looked satisfied with the appointment of the legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev as the team coach and felt that it would benefit the team. Kapil who kept the players on their toes with the vital net practice ahead of the Test match, looked quite enthusiastic about the new assignment at hand. Tendulkar, however, refused to name the final eleven that will play in the inaugural Test, saying that a final decision would be taken in consultation with the selectors and the coach tomorrow. Rival skipper Stephen Fleming agreed that the tour would be quite tough for the team, saying that the conditions prevalent here were different from those in England. He promised to a tough fight for the Indian team. Fleming looked to have a
lot of faith in the abilities of left-arm spinner Daniel
Vettori, saying that he was his trump card. Vettori,
besides being an impressive spinner, is developing into a
useful batsman down the batting order. |
Motor
cyclists steal the show MANALI, Oct 9 In what has to be one of the most amazing coincidences of motor racing, two contestants of the Raid de Himalaya are tying with exactly the same timings for the third leg of the event which went through one of the toughest terrains possible, as competitors raced through from Manali to Kaza and back. Sanjay Sikand and Raj Kapoor, both driving Maruti Gypsies, tied in with exactly the same timings for the third time today, even as the raid lost a car soon after the event was flagged off from Kaza today On Friday, the competitors had to cross the Rohtang Pass at 14,000 feet above sea level in order to get to the competitive stage that started from Gramphoo. On their way to Kaza, they had to cross the Kunzam Pass (15,800ft.). This was day 2 of Leg 2 and it included one of the longest competitive stages, 134 km of rugged boulder and stone-strewn track, which ran through the high-altitude desert. The event, which has been organised by the Himalayan Motorsport Association, became one of the highest motor sport events in the world by crossing the Kunzum Pass in its competitive stage twice in two days. The Raid has created motor sport history by competing at this height, said Vijay Parmar, the president of the association who is also the Clerk of the Course. Today was day 3, Leg 3 when the competitors came back from Kaza to Gramphoo. Car No 17 driven by Manoj Khan of Agra overturned on a sharp left hand turn shortly after flag off from Kaza. The competitors following this car helped to set the vehicle back on its wheels, only to see it roll off the cliff. The driver and co-driver escaped unscathed though shattered. They could not take part in the rally any longer Small groups of people in this sparsely populated region of Lahaul Spiti came out to watch the event. As we were waiting for the Raid cars to show at Chattru, Darshan Kalia, SDM, Kaza, showed us some photographs of what had probably been the other major event in the lives of the local residents, the yak and horse show that was a part of the Independence Day celebrations. The SDM, like his counterparts wherever the event went through, was intimately involved in the event that entails, among other things, blocking traffic en route the competitive stages. The Raid de Himalaya has been jointly sponsored by the Government of Himachal and Shilon Resorts with Maruti Udyog being the major sponsor. As usual the motor cyclists stole the show by racing through the icy mornings and evenings when the temperatures hovered around zero degrees centigrade, with the wind-chill factor making it much worse for these two-wheeler riders. The first to clock in at Manali today was Surhid Sharma, followed by Mohinder Singh. They are both running neck-to-neck at the end of the third day with barely a minute separating them. The third two-wheeler into Manali was Nitin Malhotra who has moved up considerably from his seventh place two days ago. Among the four wheelers, the first car in was B. S. Pruthvi, a surprise because he has been in and out of the race, plagued by drive shaft problems. He was followed by Satkiran Hara who has been leading till now. Both these competitors drive Esteems. The third man in was Sanjay Sikand, in a Gypsy, bits and pieces of which had been left behind in the high-altitude desert. Tying in with him was Raj Kapoor. Mona Desai and Rajni
Nagu comprise the only womens team in the Raid.
They are doing well and have been showing consistent
progress. Leg 4, the last day of the Raid de Himalaya,
will head back to Shilon Bagh where the event started
from two days ago. The competitive stage will start from
Ghyagi from where the competitors will have to again
cross the Jalori Pass again on the way to Ani. From there
to Kingal is a transport stage and then comes a long and
final competitive from Kingal to Basantpur. Regrouping is
at Naldhera and the finale will be a convoy drive to
Shilon Bagh. |
