2 Manipur officials survive blast
IMPHAL, Oct 9 (UNI) — Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board C. Dongel and his son Christopher, who is Commandant of First Manipur Rifles Battalion, escaped unhurt when a powerful bomb exploded on the main road at Telipatti here this morning. Two Manipur Rifles personnel and as many civilians were injured in the blast, the police said adding that the Dongels were attacked when they were travelling in a car. No underground organisation has so far claimed responsibility for the attempt. The day, however, coincides with the Raising Day of the Peoples Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak.

11 burnt to death
JAKARTA, Oct 9 (DPA) — Eleven persons were burned to death and two others injured when a fire gutted a traditional house in Indonesia’s eastern province of Irian Jaya, it was reported today. The official Antara news agency said fire ravaged the house belonging to some Dani tribesmen. District chief A.R. Jumati said the incident occurred when a group of 13 tribesmen stayed overnight at the house after taking part in a traditional party.

7 ultras killed
COLOMBO, Oct 9 (UNI) — Seven terrorists were killed in clashes with the security forces in the embattled north-east of Sri Lanka while troops seized large number of communication devices from the LTTE during search operations. A Defence Minister press release said today that three terrorists were killed in Nedunkerni in Wanni. Three more were killed in Jaffna when troops in an ambush spotted terrorists. One terrorist committed suicide when he tried to refuse to show the identity card at a check point.

3 dead in explosion
FAIZABAD, Oct 9 (UNI) — Three persons were killed and six others injured, three of them seriously, in a bomb explosion in Ambedkarnagar district today. District Magistrate Surendrs Bahadur Singh said the explosion occurred when a cyclist dropped a bag containing the bombs after he collided with another cyclist in the Bhiti bazar area of the district. The deceased include the person who was carrying the bombs.

Yeltsin in hospital
MOSCOW, Oct 9 (Reuters) — Russian President Boris Yeltsin has been taken to hospital suffering from flu and a high temperature, a Kremlin spokeswoman said today. Mr Yeltsin was at Elite Central Clinical Hospital, where he has undergone treatment before. But she offered no more details on the President’s condition.

Gorbachev's decision
MOSCOW, Oct 9 (DPA) — It was announced here today that the last President of the Soviet Union, Mr Mikhail Gorbachev, will be returning to active politics after a three-year break. Mr Gorbachev would be playing a leading role in the founding in December of the planned United Social Democratic Party, Mr Gavriil Popov, Chairman of the Social Democratic Movement, said. Interfax reported that Mr Gorbachev had also confirmed that he was returning to politics.Top
