Rendezvous with Vinod Sehgal
Tribune News Service

SAS NAGAR, Oct 9 — A rendezvous with Vinod Sehgal, famous ghazal and playback singer, was set for today evening by the Pinnacle Group here.

The show began almost an hour late. Vinod Sehgal commenced the evening with Bashir Badr's 'Agar Talash Karoon Koyee Mil Hi Jayega'. He apologised to the audience by singing 'Tumharey Saath Yeh Mausam Farishton Jaisa Hai, Tumharey Baad Bada Satayega'.

Groomed by the ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, Vinod Sehgal was inspired by his father Sohan Lal Sehgal. He got his formal training from R.M. Kulkarni and Chiranji Lal Jigyasu, though he did admit in a recent press conference that the two most influencing singers in his life had been "Jagjit Singh and Ghulam Ali".

In his rendition of Ibrahim Ashq's 'Woh Ayenge Jab Se Suna Hai', there were strains of Ghulam Ali.

Vinod Sehgal's popular 'Banjarey Ka Chola Pehna' always manages to evoke a positive response from the audience, and so it was with today's audience.

The almost 1,000-plus audience today demanded more ghazals than his play-back songs, which prompted the singer to comment, "This is the first time that I am having an experience like this, since, out in the open people normally like to listen to fast beat and then dance to it, and not soft ghazals like this". Demands for "Potli Baba Ki', a title track of a popular television serial, and 'Chood Aye Hum Woh Galiyan' from film 'Maachis', however, kept pouring in.

The singer was ably accompanied by Prem Kumar and Gyan Chaurasia on the tabla, Jaswant Jassa and Ravinder at the guitar and V. Sharma on the flute.

Vinod Sehgal has also lent his voice for Pamela Rooke's 'Train to Pakistan', and Jaspal Bhatti's 'Mahaul Theek Hai', besides many Hindi films. His latest project is Jabbar Patel's ambitious film 'Dr Ambedkar'.Back
