10 killed, major hurt in J&K

SRINAGAR, Oct 6 (UNI, PTI) — Five militants and two security personnel were killed and three others, including a Major were injured, in militancy-related incidents in the Kashmir valley during the past 24 hours.

An official spokesman said an Army Major and three jawans were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling was blown-up today when militants detonated a landmine at Seru village on the Dangerpora-Nihalpora road in Baramula district. They had been admitted to a hospital, he said.

Security forces killed two militants each in the border areas of Baramula and Kupwara districts during search operations while a released militant was killed by militants at Banath Badgam last night.

He said two security personnel lost their lives in militant attacks at Beerwah and Khora-Khare last evening.

He said militants also killed three civilians at Noorbagh, Hanjin and Kulgam since last evening.

BSF troops, meanwhile, killed a top Pakistani ISI agent and arms smuggler in an ambush near the border in the Akhnoor area of Jammu, BSF sources said.

Rs 11 lakh for martyrs

JAMMU, Oct 6 — Various organisations of Jammu have contributed about Rs 11 lakh for the rehabilitation of the families of Kargil martyrs. Of this, Rs 5 lakh has been contributed by Delhi Public school, Rs 5 lakh by the Jammu Brick Kiln Owners Association and Rs 70,000 by the JK Forest Department Employees.

The cheque on behalf of Delhi Public School was presented by Mrs Ritu Singh and President of the Brick Kiln Owners Association, Mr Janak Mahajan, presented the cheque on behalf of the association to the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah.

The function was organised by the Jammu Brick Kiln Owners Association and was chaired by Dr Abdullah.
