Export of diesel, petrol freed
NEW DELHI, Oct 6 (PTI) — The government has freed the export of diesel, petrol and aviation turbine fuel but banned the export of wild animals in all forms, a notification released today said.

The notification issued by the Director-General of Foreign Trade said the relevant codes relating to the export of petroleum products and wild animals had been amended for this purpose.

It said the export of aviation turbine fuel, high speed diesel and motor spirit had now been freed provided the contracts were registered with the Oil Coordination Committee.

It said all forms of wild animals, including their parts and products would not be permitted to be exported.

West Bengal minister quits
CALCUTTA, Oct 6 (UNI) — West Bengal Power Minister Sankar Sen today tendered his resignation from the Cabinet and the Assembly. Chief Minister Jyoti Basu said he had sent Dr Sen’s resignation paper to the speaker. Informed sources said Dr Sen was reportedly not happy with the close proximity of the CESC top brass with few powerful ministers of the state. Talking to reporters, Mr Basu said Dr Sen’s resignation would not cause any problem for his ministry.

Taliban jet downed
ISLAMABAD, Oct 6 (AP) — Afghanistan’s opposition soldiers used a US-made Stinger anti-aircraft missile to shoot down a Taliban fighter jet that bombed northern Takhar province today, killing eight persons. Another 13 persons were wounded, an Opposition spokesman said. Many of the victims were refugees who had fled the fighting elsewhere in the Takhar province. The Taliban pilot of the Russian-made SU-22 aircraft ejected safely before the jet crashed in the hills near Dasht-e-Kala, said Abil.

Train crash toll 27
LONDON, Oct 6 (PTI) — The death toll in yesterday’s train crash in West London rose to 27 today with the recovery of one more body as rescue workers continued to search for more victims amid the debris. At least 60 more persons were feared killed in the collision between the Cheltenham-Paddington Express and a service from London to Great Bedwyn, Wilts, which left over 150 injured.
