HPCC to hold farmers' meet GURGAON, Nov 21 The Congress in Haryana has decided to hold a state-level convention of farmers on December 20 to highlight their problems and protest against the government's handling of various issues, including law and order and supply of power. The proposed convention will be christened "Virat kisan sammelan". Although the venue of the convention is yet to be finalised, there is a strong possibility of it being held in the central part of the state to ensure a good turnout. Senior leaders of the party from the Centre are likely to take part in the proceedings. The Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) had decided in favour of the meeting following an enthusiastic response from the farming committee as noticed by Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda during his recent tour to mandis following reports of distress sale of paddy by the farmers. Also, the party had completed the exercise of collecting facts and other details pointing towards government failure in coming to the rescue of farmers from the clutches of traders. The Congress claims to have evidence to prove that at some places even government agencies were purchasing crops at a price much below the procurement price. According to the vice-president of the HPCC, Rao Dharm Pal, the possible resolution that would be moved by the convention would be demand for providing suitable compensation to the farmers who had suffered losses due to government's "indifference". The Congress, smarting under the setback it received in the last Lok Sabha elections in the state, plans to bring itself to the centrestage and to recharge its workers by this convention. As it is, the party leaders are buoyant over the support the party received to its call for the gherao of the Haryana Assembly during its just concluded session. Notwithstanding the enthusiasm in some quarters of the Congress in connection with the proposed convention under the leadership of Mr Hooda there are some who are sitting fingers crossed in the face of lobbying in the party for a change in leadership. Fence-sitters in the party are reportedly put off with some senior leaders instigating ugly scenes. A few days ago some elements indulged in violence under the nose of the central leadership of the party, at the AICC headquarters. The committee, constituted by the Congress high command consisting of Mr P. Shiv Shankar and Ms Ambika Soni to study the causes leading to the poll debacle in the state, had invited leaders from the state to ascertain their views. They were invited to the office of the AICC as members of the committee had abandoned the exercise of visiting the districts for the purpose. The "obtrusive" and "unseemly" behaviour of a section of workers prompted by some factional leaders was understood to be one of the reasons for the members of the committee reluctant to see partymen in the state. Incidentally, the scene
at the AICC headquarters occurred at a time when most
state leaders were in Chandigarh in connection with the
gherao of the Assembly. |
