Australia crush Pak by 10 wickets

BRISBANE, Nov 9 (Reuters) — Australia scored a comprehensive 10-wicket victory in the first Test against Pakistan after the tourists collapsed in their second innings.

Pakistan lost six wickets for 58 runs on the morning of the final day, bowled out for 281 after resuming at 223-4.

Australian openers Michael Slater and Greg Blewett took just 56 minutes either side of the lunch break to mop up the 74-run target, both hitting five fours on the way.

Slater, named man of the match after a first innings 169, finished on 32 not out while Blewett was unbeaten on 40.

“I thought that was one of the best Test wins I’ve been involved in, the way we played was so impressive,” Steve Waugh said of his first Test as captain on home soil.

Waugh said the two crucial periods in the match were late on the first day when Pakistan went from 265-3 to 280-6, and the morning of the final day when the Australians put in their best bowling effort of the match.

“We were never really in control of the game until this morning,” Waugh said. “It was a tough Test match, I thought they played pretty well, he said.

Both captains cited Pakistan’s long stretch without a Test — the last they played was in March — as a factor in the match.

“In this Test match it showed, we looked a bit rusty in the fielding, the players aren’t used to fielding all day,” Pakistan captain Wasim Akram said, admitting he was not happy with the team’s performance.

“I can assure you that we’re going to look a lot better side in the next Test in Hobart,” he said.

Paceman Damien Fleming cleaned up the Pakistan innings with three wickets in seven balls for three runs, after captain Wasim Akram and Moin Khan kept the Pakistani tail wagging with a 46-run partnership.

Fleming finished best of the bowlers with five for 59. He took nine wickets in a match dominated by batsmen.

But he was modest about his haul, saying the opening spells of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne had set up his wickets.

“We needed somebody to chip in at the end to get a few wickets, so I just aeroplaned in beautifully there,” he said.

Pakistan were on the back foot immediately today, Abdur Razzaq tapping the first ball of the day, a waist high full toss from leg spinner Warne, to Ricky Ponting at silly mid off.

Yesterday the tourists were scoring at over four an over, but when Saeed Anwar was out for 119, after adding just one run to his overnight tally, Pakistan had lost two wickets for two runs in half an hour.

Azhar Mahmood departed without troubling the scorers, debutant wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist stumping him off Warne’s bowling. Gilchrist completed six dismissals and made 81 runs in his first Test, an effort Waugh applauded.

Akram unfazed by big defeat

BRISBANE, Nov 9 (AFP) — Pakistan’s skipper Wasim Akram sifted through the ruins of his team’s 10-wicket first test cricket loss to Australia here today and declared: “We’re not done with yet.”

The three-match series moves to Tasmania and the second Test at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval starting on November 18, where the unpredictable Pakistanis have to win to keep the series alive to the third Test in Perth.

Although being conclusively beaten in short time on the fifth and final day, 380-Test wicket-taker Akram said: “We’ve done it before and we can do it again. We have a good enough side and I can assure you we are going to look a lot better side in the next Test match in Hobart.”

Thirty-three year-old Akram admitted that Test inactivity had cost his team over the five days of the Brisbane Test, but they would benefit from the experience.

“We haven’t played a Test match for the last six to seven months and in this Test it showed that we looked rusty in fielding,” he said

“Players weren’t used to fielding all day and after this Test we will definitely improve a lot as a team.

“Shoaib Akhtar didn’t bowl that well, mainly because of a lack of bowling practice, but in the first innings he bowled 30 overs and that will help him.

“Mushtaq Ahmed didn’t have a good game, but Saqlain Mushtaq will be fit for the next game so he’ll come back into the side.”

Akram drew positives from the team’s batting where opener Saeed Anwar starred with 61 and 119 along with the impressive No. 5 Yousuf Youhana’s 95 and 75 and Inzamam-ul-Haq’s first innings 88.

“Our batting did reasonably well considering this is our first Test in Australia. Whenever we come here (Brisbane) we usually get out for 100, but this time we got 300-plus, that was a relief for me and the team.

Our batsmen have to take responsibility that if somebody’s got 100, they should carry together to score 200. They have to get into that habit, and I think they’re getting into that habit now.”

It will take some time for us to adapt to the conditions here and we have got another two weeks until the next Test.”

Akram, using the experience of his 89 Test appearances, believes the “Rawalpindi Express” Shoaib Akhtar will benefit from the Australian conditions.

“It was a lack of bowling practice with Shoaib, his length was a bit short and he has to pitch up a bit more and let the batsman wait for the bouncer or the short ball.”

Henman, Tarango record victories

STOCKHOLM, Nov 9 (Reuters) — Second seed Tim Henman has beaten Austria’s Stefan Koubek 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the Stockholm Open but eighth seed Dominik Hrbaty was knocked out by 18-year-old Swede Andreas Vinciguerra.

Vinciguerra, a wild card entry, beat Hrbaty 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 yesterday.

Britain’s Henman regretted that he had failed to figure among the top eight players who have qualified for the ATP Tour World Championship in Hanover, Germany, from November 23 to 28.

“I worked so hard the last two weeks trying to get to Hanover, so of course I’m disappointed,” Henman, world number ten, said.

“I’m just trying to finish off the season in the best possible way and it’s pretty well documented I have not played well enough at the end of the season.”

If he wins this tournament he will be the first replacement for Hanover ahead of German Tommy Haas and Dutchman Richard Krajicek.

Krajicek is not playing this week and Haas needs to reach the final here and get maximum bonus points to overtake the Dutchman.

Henman, who served solidly and raced to a quick victory over Koubek, faces American Jan-Michael Gambill in the second round tomorrow.

“I’ve never beaten him so it will be a tough match, hopefully I can win,” Henman said. Gambill beat Arnaud Di Pasquale of France 6-2, 6-3.

MOSCOW (AP): Jeff Tarango of the USA upset his second-seeded countryman Vincent Spadea 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 on the first day of play in the Kremlin Cup Tennis Tournament on Monday.

The 31-year-old Tarango took a 3-1 lead early in the first set but in the ninth game at 40-30 he double-faulted and then sent two forehands into the net to lose the game, angering him so much that he smashed his racket.

He then won the first set on a tiebreaker and had little trouble in the second one, which he closed with a crowd-pleasing ace.

Tarango, a doubles specialist, is a defending doubles champion here and will be paired with Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

In other action, it took Andrei Pavel of Romania 47 minutes to whitewash the Russian qualifier Igor Kunitcin 6-2, 6-2. Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic ousted Russian teenager Mikhail Youzhny 6-1, 6-4.

Jan Kroslak of Slovakia struggled through to beat Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3).

American Justin Gimelstob stopped the Russian veteran Andrei Cherkasov, a wild-card for the tournament, 6-3, 6-3.

The Kremlin Cup tournament, in its 10th year, will see only one player from the top 20: defending champion Kafelnikov, no. 2 in the world. Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, currently ranked seventh on the ATP tour, pulled out on a foot injury he sustained in Stuttgart two week ago.

Agassi aspires For Hanover title

PARIS, Nov 9 (Reuters) — Andre Agassi aims to crown his outstandingly successful 1999 with victory in the ATP Tour World Championships in Hanover later this month, then get even better next year.

Sure to end the year as world number one for the first time, the American won the Paris Open on Sunday for the second time, earning his 44th career title, his fifth this year and 10th in a Super 9 tournament.

French Open champion Agassi, who has become the first player to hold both Parisian men’s tennis crowns in the same season, beat unseeded Russian teenager Marat Safin 7-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the final.

“I’m definitely going to recharge and try to get ready for it (Hanover),’’ said Agassi, who plans to return home for a rest before resuming practice for the November 23-28 tour World Championships.

“You know, I don’t want to lose sight of the fact that we have a 52-week schedule. I mean, you’ve got to be the best in the world every week,’’ he said.

“That’s my approach towards it. I want to get better. I want to ask myself to concentrate harder and longer. I feel like that builds mental strength and focus and that will better prepare me for next year.

“It’s all important. I don’t think I’m going to be too tired. I’ll be able to recuperate,’’ Agassi said after an exhausting Paris Open week.

Agassi, whose titles this year included the grand slam events at Roland Garros and the U.S. Open, said he could afford to take a week’s rest.

“Sometimes the best preparation is rest. Sometimes a good meal will do you more good that hitting some balls,’’ said Agassi, who has come back from a lowly ranking of 141 early last year.

Agassi made only a partly veiled reference to his relationship with former women’s world number one Steffi Graf, who was in the stands yesterday, as having played its part in his brilliant season.

“Paris in 1999 has changed my life and I’ll never forget it,’’ he said.

Graf won her last women’s grand slam tournament at Roland Garros in June when Agassi became a new member of a select few men’s players to have won all four grand slams and the only one to do so on four different surfaces.

“I’m always fascinated to pick the brain of a champion,’’ Agassi said on being asked whether his relationship with Graf had added to his tennis.

Uppal, Fazaluddin cause upsets

MUMBAI, Nov 9 (PTI) — Unseeded Indians, Vishal Uppal, Davis Cupper Syed Fazaluddin and Rohan Bopanna — caused major upsets in the men’s singles pre-quarter finals of the ITF Satellite Masters Tennis here today.

Delhi-based Uppal shocked seventh seeded Kuni Majmudar, an American of India origin, 6-3 5-7 6-1 in one hour 52 minutes while Fazaluddin ousted fifth seeded Per Thornadtsson of Sweden 6-4 6-2 in one hour 19 minutes.

Pune-based Bopanna sidelined his citymate sixth seeded Sandeep Kirtane 6-2 6-4.

In yet another upset of the day, unseeded Zbynek Mlynarik of Austria crushed eighth seeded Andrei Youzhny of Russia 6-3 6-2 in 58 minutes.

However, other seeded players like the top seeded Indian Prahlad Srinath, second seeded Thomas Messmer of Germany, third seeded American Tom Chicoine and fourth seed Radim Zitko of Czech Republic all moved into the last eight stage with straight set wins.

Davis Cupper Srinath subdued compatriot Vijay Kannan 7-5 6-3 while Messmer drubbed South African Coenie Vanwyk 6-4 6-1.

Chicoine needed 70 minutes to oust Josef Nesticky of Czech Republic 6-4 6-1 while Zitko took 65 minutes to sideline India’s Vinod Sridhar 6-2 6-1.

The Uppal-Majmudar clash witnessed some long rallies with both players struggling to hold their serve in the initial stages.

They broke each other’s serve in the first four games. However, the Indian got the crucial break in the eighth game and then served out the set at 6-3.

Majmudar tightened his game in the second set. Though he failed to hold his serve in the first game he managed to break back in the fourth to make it 2-all. He got the crucial break in the 12th game, after the games went with serves, to win the set 7-5.

In the decider, it was the Indian all the way. In fact, Maimudar could win just one game when he held his serve in the very first.

In the Bopanna-Kirtane match, the former looked much fitter and faster than his seasoned opponent. The youngster broke Kirtane is second game but lost his serve in the third. However, with breaks in the fourth and sixth he took the set at 6-2.

In the second set, Kirtane showed glimpses of his brilliance and broke his rival in the third game but failed to hold his own in the fourth.

They fought tooth and nail and held on the their serves till the 10th game. A few unforced errors by Kirtane saw him drop the serve in the tenth and lose the set 4-6 and with it the match.

Results men’s singles pre-quarter finals: Rohan Bopanna (Ind) b Sandeep Kirtane (Ind) 6-2, 6-4, Sayed Fazaluddin (Ind) b Per Thornadtsson (Swe) 6-4, 6-2, Prahlad Srinath (Ind) b Vijay Kannan (Ind) 7-5, 6-3, Tom Chicoine (USA) b Josef Nesticky (Cze) 6-4, 6-1, Zbynek Mlynarik (Aut) b Andrei Youzhny (Rus) 6-3, 6-2, Vishal Uppal (Ind) b Kuni Majmudar (USA) 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, Thomas Messmer (Ger) b Coenie Vanwyk (Rsa) 6-4, 6-1, Radim Zitko (Cze) b Vinod Sridhar (Ind) 6-2, 6-1.

Manjit, Abbas guide Mahindras to semis

MUMBAI, Nov 9 (PTI) — A brace each by Manjit Singh and Abbas Ali Rizvi helped Mahindra and Mahindra beat Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC) 4-1 and enter the Rovers Cup football semi-finals from group “B” at Cooperage here today.

In the match between the two local clubs, Manjit’s first goal came in the 28th minute of play. He only had to beat the BMFC keeper Gumpe Rime after getting the ball from Aqueel Ansari, who had a fine day today.

Mahindra dominated the entire match with all their players except ‘keeper S. Rajan, in the rival half. They created many chances and could have led in the first half with a bigger margin than the 1-0 lead but Shamsi Raza and Rizvi missed the post off easy chances.

But in the second half, Mahindra scored three more goals. The first came in the 8th minute when a free kick taken by Bernard reached Manjit to score off Shamsi Raza. Two minutes later, Rizvi made the score 3-0 for Mahindras by netting the ball off a pass from Ansari.

The BMFC’s lone goal came in the 33rd minute of the second half. When all the Mahindra defenders were on other side, Santosh Singh got the ball. Salim Ansari, who only a couple of minutes earlier had replaced Rajan under the bar, came out of the box to clear the ball but failed.
