Submarine for Pak
PARIS, Nov 9 (Reuters) — A submarine and eight Mirage fighter planes built in France for Islamabad and held up since last month’s military coup left for Pakistan today, diplomatic sources said. The Agosta 90 B submarine sailed from the Mediterranean navy base of Toulon at 9.00 a.m. The Mirages later flew off in two groups of four.

Gandhi medal
PARIS, Nov 9 (UNI) — Prof M.S. Swaminathan has been awarded the UNESCO Gandhi Gold Medal at the organisation’s headquarters. Conferring the medal on him yesterday, UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor praised Prof Swaminathan’s contribution in extending the benefits of biotechnology to the people of developing countries.

COLOMBO, Nov 9 (UNI) — In continuing fighting in the Wanni sector, terrorists fired mortars at troops manning defences in southeast of Pallamadu in Wanni sector but the army retaliated, killing five LTTE rebels, the operational headquarters of the Defence Ministry said today. In other areas of Nedunkanal, Gajabapura and Welioya, the troops encountered the terrorists forcing them to flee.

24 die in clashes
JAKARTA, Nov 9 (DFA) — Indonesian troops opened fire at a mob torching their military barracks early this morning in the troubled province of Maluku, where overnight violence had raised the toll to 24 in recent days of religious fighting, news reports said. Dozens have been injured and many homes burnt down as Muslim and Christian residents have clashed in Ambon, the capital of the remote eastern province, official Antara news agency reported.

24 hospitalised
MUMBAI, Nov 9 (UNI) — Twentyfour persons were hospitalised after they developed symptoms of food poisoning following consumption of fruits from 'japala' tree near the relay road railway station in south-central Mumbai today. The police said of the 24 who felt nausea and started vomitting, 16 were discharged after treatment from the government-run JJ Hospital.
