Sector 10 house burgled

CHANDIGARH, Nov 9 — Ms Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Sector 10, reported that some one stole some silver ornaments and household articles from her residence while she was at the PGI. A case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC has been registered at the North police station.

Gambler held: The police has arrested a Bapu Dham Colony resident on the charges of gambling at a public place in the colony.

Ashok Kumar was arrested while playing 'satta' near his house in the colony. A search of this person led to the seizure of Rs 522. A case under Sections 13-A, 3 and 67 of the Gambling Act has been registered at the East police station.

Pickpocket caught: The police arrested Avtar Singh on the charges of picking the pocket of Panchkula resident, Mr D.D. Sharma, in the Sector 26 grain market.

A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC has been registered at the East police station.

Vehicles stolen: Mr Ramji Lal, a resident of Sector 32, reported that his scooter, CHJ-6911, was stolen from his residence. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the South police station.

In another theft incident, Mr Mohan Sharma, reported that his car, CH-01-D-9742, was stolen from the Sector 22 market. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the Central police station.

Clothes burnt: Clothes worth thousands of rupees were gutted in a fire, which broke out in a cloth shop in Landhran village here late last evening. According to the information available, the fire broke out due to a short circuit. The owner of the shop had gone to another shop nearby when the incident occurred. However, the local fire station received no help call from Landhran village yesterday.

In another case, a minor fire broke out in a house in Phase VI here this evening. An official of the local fire station said the fire broke out due to a short circuit.

Purse snatched: Two scooter-borne youths snatched a purse containing Rs 15,000 from a woman in Phase VII here this afternoon. The exact details of the case could not be ascertained. The police did not confirm that the incident occured.

Liquor seized: At least nine bottles of liquor were seized from Partap Singh in Phase IV here last evening. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against him.Back

Cultural function on November 11

CHANDIGARH, Nov 9 — The Indian Council for Cultural Relations will organise a cultural function to celebrate International Students Day on November 11 at Panjab University Law Auditorium to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

The Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mrs Vineeta Rai, will be the chief guest at the function. The highlight of the function will be folk dances and music to be presented by foreign students of various countries.

Function: The City Music Club, a musical club of Panjab University students, will organise Vijay Path, a cultural function on November 30 in the university campus, dedicated to the heroes and martyrs of Indian Army.

Students, Indian as well as foreigners from various university departments and colleges, can participate in the function. Those interested can contact the club till November 11. The president of the Club, Mr Dev Raj Dev, has in a release stated that a sum of Rs 10 per student will be collected as charity and 80 per cent of this after meeting the expenditure of the show will be donated to the Army Welfare Fund on behalf of the Panjab University students.Back

Brinjal gets cheaper

CHANDIGARH, Nov 9 — While tomato has become costlier, the prices of a number of other vegetables have decreased in the market during the past one week.

During a survey of the market, it was found that if a kg of tomato was priced at Rs 10 last week, it could be had today at Rs 14. The wholesale price of the same has increased from Rs 40 to Rs 60 per 5 kg.

On the other hand, the price of brinjal has come down. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 10 three-four days back, could be had at Rs 6 in retail and Rs 24 per 5 kg in the wholesale market and the fall was attributed to more supplies from Punjab and Haryana.

Similarly, carrot has become cheaper. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 40 last week, could be had at Rs 20 today. The wholesale price of the vegetable has come down from Rs 170 to Rs 80 per 5 kg. According to traders, the price has come down owing to the start of arrival of fresh crop from Punjab. The vegetable had been coming from Himachal Pradesh till last week.

The price of gourd, which had been stable at Rs 10 a kg during the past two months, has come down to Rs 8 in retail and from Rs 40 to Rs 32 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

There was no change in the price of peas as these were still priced at Rs 30 a kg in retail and Rs 130 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

Ginger was available at the same price, while the price of lemon has come down from Rs 30 to Rs 20 a kg in retail and from Rs 130 to Rs 80 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

Garlic has become cheaper during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 50 last week, could be purchased at Rs 40 in retail. Its price has come down from Rs 200 to Rs 160 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

Cauliflower and cabbage were priced at Rs 10 and Rs 8 a kg, respectively.

Onion and potato could be had at Rs 12 and Rs 10 a kg, respectively, in the retail market.Back



 


Six-run win for GMS-44

CHANDIGARH, Nov 9 — Government Model School, Sector 44, had a narrow six-run victory over St Stephen's School, Sector 45, in one of the semi-finals of the Lions Trophy Cricket Tournament being played here at Government Model School, Sector 32.

Batting first, GMS-44 made 99 runs and were all out in 18 overs. Amardeep and Samdharsh scored 17 runs each. Tribhuvan claimed three wickets of GMS-44.

A fine bowling of Kabeer who bagged four wickets wrecked St Stephen's batting line-up and the team was bundled out for 83 runs.

Brief scores: GMS-44 — 99 all out (Amardeep 17, Samdharsh 17, Tribhuvan 3 for 24, Sachinpreet 2 for 3); St Stephen's-45 — 93 all out (Akshay 18, Raghav 14, Kabeer 4 for 16, Shahrih 2 for 22).

Karate championship: Players of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, did well in the UT Inter-School Karate Championship for under-19 boys organsied at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here today. Rohit, Nimit and Manish of GMSSS-10 clinched golds in the below 50 kg, 55 kg and 60 kg categories, respectively. Puneet of GSSS-19 got the gold in the below-45 kg category.

Taekwondo meet: The Taekwondo Association of Chandigarh (ITF) will organise the VIIIth Chandigarh State Taekwondo Championship at Skating Rink Hall in Sector 10 on November 13 and 14, according to Mr Harjinder Kumar, President of the association.

Sport day: Gian Jyoti Public School, SAS Nagar will organise its annual sport day on November 11 at the school to coincide with its 25th anniversary celebrations.
