Work on to reopen
Hindustan-Tibet Road RAMPUR (HP), Nov 1 Several men and machines have been deployed for the past 20 days to reopen the Hindustan-Tibet Road, the lifeline of the tribal areas of Kinnaur, which has been blocked due to heavy landslides near the Manglad khud. Huge boulders and debris have blocked the road and the engineers are facing an uphill task in clearing the road. More boulders roll down as the debris on the road is removed. The authorities are hopeful that the road might be cleared this week. A 500-metre stretch of the road has been blocked following landslides since October 13. Local residents allege that haphazard blasting of rocks by the hydroelectric project authorities has destabilised the area, triggering off landslides every now and then for the past few years. Many houses in the Nathpa village have also developed cracks. The fragile hills have been destabilised due to blasting of rocks. Vehicular traffic has been diverted on the Gaura-Mashnu road which is capable of taking only one way traffic. Two trucks have rolled down on the road during the past 15 days. The road has frequently been getting blocked due to landslides. It remained closed for four days last month. All this has badly hit tourism in the tribal areas. Local residents are demanding that the upkeep of the road should be transferred to the Border Roads Organisation as the state PWD has "miserably" failed to maintain it. The SDM, Rampur, Mr Rakesh Kanwar, said vehicular traffic was being regulated on the other link road and timings have been fixed for up and down traffic. The annual Kinnaur fair has been affected due to the road block and local residents fear that the famous Lavi fair here would also be a lack-lustre affair in case the road was not reopened. The apple growers are also worried as earlier their fruit could not be sent to Delhi because of the transporters strike and now the road was playing spoilsport. The highway has witnessed frequent landslides ever since work on the Nathpa-Jhakri power project was started in the area. Although the state government was trying to promote tourism in the tribal areas, foreign tourists in particular do not take the risk of being held up due to landslides. The celebrations of the ancient Tabo monastery in Kinnaur district did not draw tourists as the road remained closed for about 15 days during the fair about two years ago. Tourism organisers have
expressed concern over the bad condition of the road and
have demanded its improvement so that the tribal areas,
which are a treasure of ancient art and culture, can be
properly exposed to the outside world. |

BJP tarnishing
Rajiv's image SHIMLA, Nov 1 The former Chief Minister, Mr Virbhadra Singh, has accused the ruling BJP of trying to tarnish the image of Rajiv Gandhi by including his name in the challan of the Bofors controversy. In a statement here today, Mr Virbhadra Singh said the "vulgar haste" displayed by the BJP alliance government in putting up challan in the Bofors case was yet another example of Indian politics degenerating to a new low. The emergence of Mrs Sonia Gandhi as unanimous Congress leader and her being elected as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party had given a rude shock to the BJP-alliance. He wondered what was the haste to put up this challan at this time when more papers had yet to come from Swiss banks? If the BJP had anticipated that this action would demoralise Mrs Sonia Gandhi and other Congress then they were mistaken. This action would only strengthen her and the Congressmen to fight to the finish this alliance, he said. Mr Virbhadra Singh said
he felt ashamed as an Indian to see the ruling party
stooping this low to discredit a leader of impeccable
integrity and modesty. |
