AMRITSAR
Distinction achieved:
Nikhil Chadha, a class VIII student of the local DAV Public School, has been awarded a certificate of excellence for his performance at an all-India talent search examination organised by the Children's Education Trust of India, New Delhi, in 1998.

FARIDKOT
Gastroenteritis:
The unchecked sale of overriped fruits and vegetables and other eatable in unhygienic conditions has caused concern among residents following the outbreak of gastroenteritis here and in Kot Kapura. Nearly 2,000 persons including children, have been treated for the disease so far.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Liquor smuggling:
The Excise Department has detected cases of illicit liquor smuggling here. Mr Dyal Singh, Excise and Taxation Officer, said here on Saturday that during nakas on the Chandigarh-Sirhind road and on other roads passing through the district, huge quantities of liquor were seized. More than 10 cases of FIRs have been lodged in this regard.

GURDASPUR
Electoral rolls:
Deputy Commissioner, S.K. Sandhu, on Friday said that new electoral rolls would be ready by July 21 and objections raised by election and registration officers would be cleared by June 20. He said nearly 44,924 applications were received to rectify the names wrongly entered in the rolls.

JALANDHAR
Meeting:
Chaudhuri Charn Singh Nyaya Morcha, Punjab, organised a meeting on the death anniversary of the former Prime Minister Charan Singh on Saturday. Workers of the morcha took a vow to weed out corruption and called on the state and Central Government to adopt his economic policies to check unemployment.

Suicide: Nimmo (28) of Nivi abadi in the Santokhpura locality set herself ablaze on Friday. She received 80 per cent burns and died at the local civil hospital.

Girl kills self: A college student and a resident of Gurka village was allegedly enticed by Stephen of Namdot in Ferozepore district on May 18. The girl returned home on May 23 where she committed suicide, the police said here on Friday. A case under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered against the youth for allegedly forcing her to commit suicide.

KAPURTHALA
Killed:
Kanta Rani of Seinpura mohalla was crushed to death by a bus near the of Sat Narain bazaar while she was returning to her house from a temple. The police has registered a case against the driver, who is missing.

LUDHIANA
Girl rescued:
A minor girl, who was allegedly lured away by a waiter here, has been rescued by the police. The accused, Kundan Lal, who hails from Asso village in UP, has been remanded in police custody.

MOGA
Wheat arrival:
Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Kang, said here on Saturday that 3,41,234 lakh tonnes of wheat had arrived in the markets here so far. He said the Food and Supplies Department had procured 19,560 tonnes of wheat from Markfed, 81,660 tonnes from Punsup, 7,624 tonnes from the Punjab Warehousing Corporation, and 69,565 tonnes of wheat from the FCI.

SAMRALA
Strike:
The local Bar Association observed a strike here on Saturday in support of its demand that the court should function for five days a week. According to the President of the association, Mr H.S. Diwa, lawyers have been on a strike since April 3 and will continue to do so till their demands were accepted.

Welfare club: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Citizen Youth Welfare Club: President — Mr Rajbir Singh Mangat; Vice-President — Mr Rakesh Bharti; General Secretary — Mr Jatinder Bittu; Joint Secretary — Mr Bal Krishan Kakkar; and Treasurer — Mr Harvinder Singh Benipal.

Dharna: On a call given by the State Pensioners Confederation, five pensioners observed a fast and sat on a dharna in front of the civil court here on Saturday in support of their demands. A rally was also held which was addressed by the local Congress MLA, Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon. Later, a memorandum was submitted to the SDM, condemning the state government for not implementing their "accepted" demands.

Transferred: The SDM, Mr Sanjay Popli, has said Behlolpur village has once again been transferred to Samrala tehsil. The President of the Bar Association, Mr Harbans Singh, thanked the state government for the decision in a resolution passed here on Saturday.

TARN TARAN
Robbers held:
Jagdish Singh, Surinder Singh and Bhupinder Singh of Dabri Khanna village have been arrested by the police. Mr Surjit Singh, SSP, said here on Friday that they were planning to commit a robbery in the area when they were nabbed. Four pistols and some cartridges have been seized from their possession.

Pay scales: The Chandigarh District Council of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) on Saturday threatened to launch an agitation after June 1 against the delay in the release of the UGC pay scales to teachers working in non-government colleges of the UT.

Youth Congress: The following have been nominated office-bearers of the Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress: vice-president — Mr Navin Gupta; general secretaries — Mr Rajesh Sharma and Mr Rajan Goyal; secretaries — Mr Sukhjivan Sharma and Mr Surinder Sharma; and convener legal cell — Mr Ravinder Singh Rana.

Streetlight: There is no streetlight on the road dividing Sector 40-C and D for the past one year, complained the Sector 40-C Welfare Association MIG(I) Houses. Mr S.K. Khosla, Secretary of the association, said representations to the Municipal Corporation and the Engineering Department of the Administration had evoked no response.

Nursing camp: Mr Baljit Kaur, clinical instructor of community health nursing from the Nursing School, PGI, gave instructions on Saturday, the third day of the first aid and home nursing camp being held at the Government High School, Sarangpur. The participants were taught to read the thermometer and convert fahrenheit into centigrade and vice versa.

Students honoured: Chitkara Mathematics Course organised a function on Saturday in a Sector 18 park to honour its students who made it to the IITs, PEC, TIET, REcs and other engineering colleges. Prizes to six such meritorious students were given by Dr H.C. Sharma, Director, SIE, Chandigarh.

Lions Club: Mr K. K. Monga has been nominated Zone Chairman of Region IX of the International Association of Lions Club-321 F by Mr Paramjit Kohli, district governor of the club.

Cooperative society:
Mr Rajinder Singh Badheri and Mr Gurdev Singh have been co-opted as members of the Mani Majra Cooperative Marketing-cum-Processing Society. This was stated by the chairman of the society on Saturday.

Vaccinated:
As many as 100 children from underprivileged families were vaccinated against hepatitis-B at a camp organised by the Rotary Club of SAS Nagar at Dharamgarh village on Saturday.

FARIDABAD
Telephone exchange:
The capacity of the telephone exchanges, here will be increased by 20,000 lines by the end of the current financial year, according to Mr R.N. Prabhakar, General Manager, Telecom. As many as 3,000 lines will be added to the Sector 15 exchange, 4,000 to the Nehru Ground exchange, 2,000 to Ballabhgarh exchange and 1,000 to the Surajkund exchange. The expansion will clear the waiting list of 9,733 applicants as on April 1.

FATEHABAD
Arrested:
The police on Saturday arrested a youth for allegedly extorting money from a shopkeeper at gunpoint in Tohana. According to the SP, Mr Rajbir Deswal, Mr Pulkit the shopowner informed them that a youth had come to the shop in his absence on Tuesday and extorted Rs 5,000 from his uncle, at gun-point.

ROHTAK
Booked:
The police has registered a case against Mukesh of Kharhar village, who reportedly fired a round from his pistol in air in order to frighten Devender of the same village. An altercation over a passage in the village is stated to be the reason. The accused has been booked under Sections 285 and 336, IPC.

SIRSA
Food poisoning:
Eight members of a family were taken ill due to food poisoning at Kussar village on Friday. They have been admitted to the civil hospital here.

Stolen: A jeep belonging to Mr Satpal Sharma was reportedly stolen from outside his residence at Dwarkapuri here on Friday.

Water shortage: The President of the Haryana Kisan Mazdoor Samiti said here on Friday that farmers of the district were facing an acute shortage of irrigation water. He said the farmers in several villages of the Darba Assembly segment were also facing shortage of drinking water.

Dead: Gurpreet Singh (16) of Tarvana village reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison at his house on Friday. According to sources, he had an argument with his uncle. However, the cause of the dispute is not known.

The Himachal Governor, Ms V.S. Rama Devi, on Friday inaugurated a fortnight-long summer craft bazaar organised by the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation and the Development Commissioner, Handicraft, Ministry of Textiles.
