Chain snatched:
A gold chain was snatched from a girl near railway police quarters here on Friday when she was pillion riding with her brother.

JALANDHAR
TB Day:
The Health and Family Welfare Department observed International TB Day at the district training centre, Civil Hospital here on Friday. Dr C.P. Bansal, Civil Surgeon, said that there were 90 lakh TB patients in the country. Five lakh lives were lost every year due to this disease. In order to detect the disease X-rays and sputum tests were done at all civil hospitals and primary health centres of the district, he added.

KAPURTHALA
More telephones:
Mr Harbhajan Singh Padda, Member, Telephone Advisory Committee, Jalandhar Circle, on Friday announced that 1,000 more telephone connections would be released in the town till March 31. With this the capacity of the telephone exchange here will rise to 10,000. He said that till March 31, 800 connections in Bholath exchange, 850 connections in Begowal exchange, 900 in Dhilwan exchange, while 800 in Boolpur exchange would be released.

KHARAR
Demand:
Sarpanch of Tira village near here and the Youth Welfare and Development Club (Regd) of the village, in a letter to the Chief Minister, Punjab on Thursday, demanded that the Punjab State Electricity Board should be directed to shift the transformer in the village to a safer place. They said the transformer was at a very deserted place and many times electricity wires had been stolen causing a loss to the board and inconvenience to the villagers.

Camp: As many as 71 persons donated blood in a blood donation camp organised by the Lions Club here at Old Municipal Council Office on Friday. Mr Satwant Singh Gill, a President's award winner, inaugurated the camp.

LUDHIANA
Free eye camp:
The J.S. Free Eye Operation Club organised a free eye camp at the Senior Citizens Home, Sarabha Nagar here on Thursday for senior citizens as well as the children of Bal Bhavan. As many as 70 patients were examined. The camp was inaugurated by Dr T.S. Cheema.

MOGA
Illegal possession:
Muslims residing in Langeana Nawan village, under the Baghapurana police station alleged illegal possession of their land by certain influential persons. In a communication to the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday they sought his intervention in the matter. They said, the land was being used by them as a graveyard.

NAWANSHAHR
Blood donation camp:
The Physically Handicapped Association, Punjab, organised its seventh annual blood donation camp here at Jot Nursing Home on Friday. Mr Ajit Sailani, chairman of the association, inaugurated the camp which was dedicated to the tercentenary of the Khalsa Panth. As many as 30 units of blood were collected. Seven tricycles were also distributed to the handicap persons, said Mr Kashmir Sanawa, general secretary of the association.

Electoral rolls: As per the directions of the Election Commission of India, a comprehensive programme to revise the electoral rolls in the district was chalked out at a meeting held here on Friday under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner cum District Electoral Officer, Dr Roshan Sunkaria. The draft roll will be published on April 10 and claims and objections will be received up to May 10. Besides a special campaign in two phases will be launched to receive claims and objections on April 24 and 25 and May 8 and 9 at all 472 polling booths throughout the district. The disposal of claims and objections will be on June 12 and final publication of rolls will be done on July 12, said an official release here on Friday.

Camp:
A three-day homoeopathic camp was organised by the Homoeopathic Medical Association of India, mid town unit here at Mata Kali Devi Temple which concluded on Thursday. The camp was inaugurated by Dr K.C. Batish, Member, Council of Homoeopathic System of medicines, Punjab. About 700 patients were examined during the camp and medicines, free of cost, were given to each patient.

Appointed: Dr J.S. Puar, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, has appointed Dr H.S. Jhajj as Head of the Department of Statistics of the university, for a period of three years, according to a press release issued by the university here on Friday.

Coaching: The IAS and Allied Services Training Centre at Punjabi University here is going to start coaching for P.O. (banking service) candidates who have applied for probationary officers, according to Dr G.S. Bajwa, Director of the Centre here on Friday. He said SC/ST candidates will be provided coaching, free of cost.top

AMBALA
Convocation: As many as 569 graduates and postgraduates were awarded degrees at a convocation held at S.D. College in cantonment here on Friday. Swami Avdeshanand delivered the address and Dr Deshbandhu, Principal, read the annual report.

Meeting: The District Congress Committee (Rural), at a meeting held here on Thursday, demanded action against those who manhandled a former Education Minister, Mr Phool Chand Mullana, at Panjail village on Thursday. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Mr Balwant Gupta. It warned that in case the culprits were not arrested soon, an agitation would be launched.

Petroleum dealers' association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Haryana Petroleum Dealers' Welfare Association: President — Mr Ranjeet Singh Chauhan; Senior Vice-President — Mr Shamsher Singh Gogi; General Secretary — Mr Pawan Gupta; and Finance Secretary — Mr P.K. Soni.

Campaign:
The Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB) has launched a campaign to stop the evasion of market fee and marketing development fee. The Zonal Administrator of the board, Mr Rajesh Jogpal, along with Mr Chander Sain, Zonal Marketing Enforcement Officer, had conducted surprise raids in various mandis, including Bhiwani, Siwanidigawa, Behl, Hansi, Hisar and Tohana and imposed a fine of Rs 1.50 lakh during the two days of raids, a spokesperson of the board said here on Friday.

KAITHAL
Concerned:
The District Government Teachers Association expressed concern over the leakage of class V annual examination papers which started on March 23. District secretary Jai Parkash Shastri and Block President Satbir Goyat; respectively of the association said in a press release issued here on Thursday. A team of teachers found that the paper which was to take place on March 26 was available on March 25. When the teachers tried to contact the District Primary Education Officer, he was not available.

Graft:
District Taxation Inspector Naresh Kumar Gupta, was caught red handed by a raiding party headed by Mr Paramjit Singh, DSP, while accepting a bribe of Rs 14,000 from a truck owner in the district Excise and Taxation Commissioner's office complex here on Wednesday.

SIRSA
Cremated:
Shyam Lal Kandoi (30), who reportedly consumed poison on March 24 in Jaipur after India’s defeat at the hands of the Pakistan cricket team, was cremated at Ellanabad on Friday.

Dharna: Members of the Haryana PWD Mechanical Workers Union, Sirsa, staged a one-day dharna in front of the office of the Public Health Department here on Friday in support of their demands. Speaking on the occasion , Mr Kanshi Ram, district president of the union, alleged that pending T.A. bills of employees had not been cleared for the past 14 months and bonus released by the government for 1996-97 had not been deposited to their accounts.

Burn injuries: Neetu (3), daughter of Harpat Singh, a farmer, received serious burn injuries when she split boiling water on herself at Malwani village on Friday. She has been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Sirsa.

Wages: Mr Dharmpal, general secretary, Haryana Mandi Mazdoor Union, has demanded an increase in the wages of labourers in the state. He said the prices of essential commodities had increased. A charter of demands in this connection had been submitted to the authorities of the Haryana State Marketing Board, he added.

Eye camp: A free eye camp was organised by Guru Nanak Dispensary at the Kasturba Gandhi Old Age Home here on Friday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Lachman Dass Arora, a former minister. Over 200 persons were examined and free medicines distributed among the patients. Mr Arora announced a grant of Rs 5100 for the dispensary.

Contaminated water: Residents of Maharaja Agarsain Colony here have alleged that they have been receiving contaminated tap water. They have also alleged that despite repeated complaints to the authorities concerned, nothing has been done so far.

SONEPAT
Workshop:
A one-day workshop on ‘stress management’ was organised at the Atlas Cycle Industries auditorium here on Friday for the benefit of corporate executives. Commodore (Retd) S.P.S. Dalal, an authority in the field conducted the workshop which was inaugurated by Mr I.D.Chugh, Director, Atlas Cycles.

Held: The Gohana police has arrested three persons of Mundlana village under the Excise Act following the recovery of 22 bottles of liquor from their possession on Thursday.

Arrested: The Rai police has arrested two persons on the charge of theft and recovered property worth Rs 80,000 from them.

Probe: Representatives of various organisations at a meeting here on Friday passed a resolution urging the state government to order a high-level probe into the use of sub-standard material in the laying of sewerage under the Yamuna Action Plan in the city. They pointed out that the probe would expose the "misdeeds" of officials of the Public Health Department as well as the contractors. top

Development funds:
Minister of State for Cooperatives, Rikhiram Kondal said on Friday that Rs 31.80 lakh had been spent in Jhandutta development block under backward area sub-plan for providing facilities to backward areas in this block during this year. He was speaking at a public meeting at Samoh about 30 km from here after inaugurating five km long Samoh-Auhar link road.

Pilgrims: Over 1.5 lakh pilgrims visited Naina Devi temple here during the 10-day Navaratra fair. The Temple Trust Chairman and SDM, Mr Roshan Lal Rana, said here on Saturday that no untoward incident was reported during the fair .top
