Basketball behind Windies' cricket decline SYDNEY, March 9 (AP) The growing popularity of American sports in the Caribbean has been blamed for the West Indies first Test thrashing by Australia. Former Australian captain Mark Taylor said basketball was taking a grip on the youth of the Caribbean, costing its cricket team talented players. "A lot more West Indians, particularly the six footers who used to bowl really quick all the time, are now going into basketball," Taylor said today. "So theres a greater influence in the West Indies to play other sports, whereas 15 years ago it was cricket, cricket and cricket." The Windies are still relying on aging pacemen Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, but its batting plunged record depths when they were dismissed for 51 at Port of Spain. Former Australian cricket captain Bob Simpson, having been on the receiving end of some savage West Indian thrashings, took a lot of pleasure from the Aussies 312-run victory. It was two decades ago when Simpson led a depleted Australian side, decimated by defections to Kerry Packers World Series cricket, on a doomed five-Test series to the Caribbean. The Australians lost 3-1, but it was the opening innings of the series at the same venue where the West Indians capitulated today, the Queens Park Oval, which cut most into Simpson. The side was bowled out for 90 on a rain-affected pitch and eventually lost the opening encounter by an innings and 106 runs. "Im delighted with the way Australia won," Simpson said. The West Indies have been unrelenting with their pressure on other countries and been dominating for so long. Its good to see that happen to them." Simpson said Australias 1995 ice-breaking tour win over the West Indies, when he was coach of the national team, was the strongest sign that their cricket was in decay. "Theyve been on the decline for sometime," Simpson said. "The big one was our
win in 1995 and it set the pattern for what has
followed." |
Rusedski blasts Korda, Seles upset INDIAN WELLS, (CALIFORNIA), March 9 (Reuters) Briton Greg Rusedski, accustomed to success here, blasted his way past former Australian Open champion Petr Korda in straight sets in the opening round of the Champions Cup. The 10th-seeded Rusedski, who lost to Marcelo Rios in last years final, utilized his powerful serves and hung tough from the baseline with the Czech in posting a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the $ 2.45 million event yesterday. Veteran Michael Chang lost to Dutchman Jan Siemerink 7-5, 6-3 while 13th-seeded and recent Australian Open finalist Thomas Enqvist of Sweden and 15th seed Albert Costa of Spain were eliminated. Enqvist was ousted by talented Russian teenager Marat Safin 6-4, 6-4 and Costa fell 7-5, 6-1 to another victorious Dutchman Paul Haarhuis. Andre Agassi made an even earlier exit as the ninth-seeded American withdrew yesterday, still suffering from a right hamstring sprain sustained last week at the Scottsdale event. Rusedski felt sure of himself against the 76th-ranked Korda, repelling the Czech every time he seemed about to challenge the Britons formidable power serve. "Im starting to feel fit Im starting to feel fresh," Rusedski said. "Im starting to get back to the form I was at last year during this time." But what Rusedski was most interested in discussing yesterday was the rumour he had heard that Pete Sampras was reconsidering playing in the Davis Cup first round tie at Birmingham, England in April. "I heard Sampras might be playing because I hear his girlfriends in London for six months," said Rusedski. "So, I hear he might be showing up for this Davis Cup tie. Thats the rumour going around, supposedly." Rusedskis report could not be immediately substantiated. Chang, meanwhile, continued a slide that has taken him from third in the world at the end of 1997 to 39th in the rankings following a series of injuries last year. The only glimmer of hope Chang had in the match came when the 32nd-ranked Siemerink, up two service breaks in the second set, slipped on the court and fell hard on his hip. Although bruised and treated by the trainer, Siemerink was able to close out the match. But the 27-year-old Chang insists he is not entering the twilight of his career. "I feel like I know my best tennis is ahead of me", Chang said. "Thats cut and dry for me". "Unless I start losing every single first round or I dont feel like going out and working hard, then Ill know its time to call it quits". Hingis, Rubin advance Number one Martina Hingis continued her carefree skip through the $ 1.3 million Evert Cup yesterday by dismissing Patty Schnyder 6-1, 6-3 while former top-ranked Monica Seles sank to defeat. Hingis advanced to a quarterfinals date with American Chanda Rubin, a 6-4, 6-4 upset winner over number seven Amanda Coetzer of South Africa. Seles was swept out of the tournament by up-and-coming Slovakian Henrieta Nagyova 2-6, 4-6 in the third round. Hingis had few problems in beating fellow-Swiss Schnyder in just 54 minutes. Moving swiftly and counterpunching brilliantly against the left-hander, the 18-year-old Hingis forced Schnyder to go for outright winners, which the 20-year-old rarely made. Schnyder, seeded 10th, made 25 unforced errors against only 13 winners. "I tried to play aggressive, its the only way to beat her", Schnyder said. "I made too many mistakes. I was risking too much. I was dominating a lot of the points, but I missed when I had to go for a winner. She was running down all the balls and reacting well. She could read my game a little." Hingis, who now has a 2-1 record against Schnyder, said that was the best she had played against her foe. Schnyder, mired in controversy the past two months after firing her coach and hiring mysterious German nutrition guru Rainer Harnecker, who has put her on a radical diet and claims to be able to cure cancer and AIDS, admits she is not firing on all cylinders. "Im less confident," said Schnyder, who won five titles last year. "Ive had a hard time and I couldnt concentrate the way I wanted to. But I can handle the situation better right now." Seles looked completely out of sorts against the 20-year-old Nagyova, a tall, powerful player who made Seles appear slow-footed and confused. Nagyova, who has won five titles in her career but had never beaten a top-10 player, said it was her biggest victory. "It was for sure some of the best I played," the 27th-ranked Nagyova said. "I played what I was thinking, some slice, not hitting balls so hard, a little bit clever, I was mentally fit." Seles was making her first appearance in Indian Wells since 1992, when she won the title. While she reached the semifinals of the 1999 Australian Open, Seles has only played three events this year and hasnt won a title in five months. "My mind wasnt there from the start", Seles said. "She really didnt give me a chance to get into it. My head wasnt there, my game wasnt there, I was just pushing the ball back." Nagyovas opponent in
the quarterfinals will be 12th seed Sandrine Testud, who
beat fellow-Frenchwoman and eighth seed Nathalie Tauziat
7-6 (7-3), 6-2. |
Tendulkar doubtful for opening match MUMBAI, March 9 (PTI) Sachin Tendulkar took an Air-India flight this morning to England to get immediate medical attention to his back problem which has become acute, a Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) source revealed today. Tendulkar, who suffered back spasms during his superb century knock when India were in a hopeless position in the second innings of the first Test against arch-rivals Pakistan in Chennai, is unlikely to take part in at least the first match of the forthcoming triangular series, the source said. India are to take on Sri Lanka on March 22 at Nagpur in their first round-robin match of the limited overs tournament. There are already rumours floating that Tendulkar is keen to rest his back by skipping the triangular series in India in order to attain peak fitness for the all-important May 14 to June 20 World Cup in England. Only last night national
selector Shivlal Yadav had revealed in Hyderabad that
Tendulkar had turned down the offer of vice-captaincy
after an unanimous decision of the selectors to give him
the post at Calcutta. |

Indian bowlers then contained early Sri Lankan enterprise to restrict them to 234 for seven wickets. The Indian colts, who had won both the ties at Gwalior with ease, maintained their supremacy as Sri Lanka, despite defiance by openers Jehan Mubarak (33) and Ian Daniels (40), and Prasana Jayawardene (60 - 67 b,2x4,1x6), were never in the run.
