McGrath, Gillespie crush WI

PORT OF SPAIN (Trinidad), March 9 (PTI) — West Indies were all out for their lowest Test score of 51 runs in just 19.1 overs to suffer a humiliating 312-run defeat against Australia in the first cricket Test on the fourth day here yesterday.

Australian fast bowlers Glenn McGrath with five for 28 and Jason Gillespie (4 for 18) between them bundled out the home side two runs short of their previous lowest Test score of 53 made against Pakistan in 1986.

With yesterday’s haul, McGrath took 10 wickets in a Test match for the first time.

Ridley Jacobs with 19 was the only batsman to touch double digits as West Indies suffered their sixth successive Test defeat after the recent 0-5 away washout against South Africa.

They had been set a difficult victory target of 364 runs after Australia were all out for 261 in their second innings this morning.

Earlier, West Indies, tottering at 16 for five, were given brief respite when rain started pelting and lunch had to be taken early. Pacemen McGrath and Gillespie had wrecked the innings in little more than an hour.

The day had begun well for West Indies with the last three Australian second innings wickets falling for 34.

Courtney Walsh (4/67) took his Test match haul to 404.

Gillespie picked up the wickets of openers Sherwin Campbell and Suruj Raganooth, plus Brian Lara and Pedro Collins, and McGrath accounted for Dave Joseph, Jimmy Adams, Ridley Jacobs, Roland Holder and Curtly Amborse.

Courtney Walsh, who crossed the 400-wicket mark at Test level, remained unbeaten on two.

Brian Lara, who has had a disastrous run as the West Indies captain, said after the match that his team’s batting was struggling and it had to get out of this situation.

Lara, who made only three runs after hitting a fluent 62 in the first innings, said he would have to get some big scores for the team’s performance to improve.

Steve Waugh leading Australia for the first time in a Test match, said he was pleased with "great allround" performance of his side.

McGrath, who shared a gritty 67-runs last wicket partnership with Gillespie in the first essay which proved crucial for Australia, and then came good with the ball claiming 10 wickets, five each in both the innings, was declared man-of-the-match.

The debacle marked Steve Waugh’s opening Test as Australian captain since Mark Taylor’s retirement just before tour.Top

Basketball behind Windies' cricket decline

SYDNEY, March 9 (AP) — The growing popularity of American sports in the Caribbean has been blamed for the West Indies’ first Test thrashing by Australia.

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor said basketball was taking a grip on the youth of the Caribbean, costing its cricket team talented players.

"A lot more West Indians, particularly the six footers who used to bowl really quick all the time, are now going into basketball," Taylor said today.

"So there’s a greater influence in the West Indies to play other sports, whereas 15 years ago it was cricket, cricket and cricket."

The Windies are still relying on aging pacemen Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, but its batting plunged record depths when they were dismissed for 51 at Port of Spain.

Former Australian cricket captain Bob Simpson, having been on the receiving end of some savage West Indian thrashings, took a lot of pleasure from the Aussies’ 312-run victory.

It was two decades ago when Simpson led a depleted Australian side, decimated by defections to Kerry Packer’s World Series cricket, on a doomed five-Test series to the Caribbean.

The Australians lost 3-1, but it was the opening innings of the series at the same venue where the West Indians capitulated today, the Queen’s Park Oval, which cut most into Simpson.

The side was bowled out for 90 on a rain-affected pitch and eventually lost the opening encounter by an innings and 106 runs.

"I’m delighted with the way Australia won," Simpson said.

The West Indies have been unrelenting with their pressure on other countries and been dominating for so long. It’s good to see that happen to them."

Simpson said Australia’s 1995 ice-breaking tour win over the West Indies, when he was coach of the national team, was the strongest sign that their cricket was in decay.

"They’ve been on the decline for sometime," Simpson said.

"The big one was our win in 1995 and it set the pattern for what has followed."Top

Spirited JCT pull off 5-0 win

CALCUTTA, March 9 (PTI) — Playing an organised game, JCT Mills, Phagwara, pulled off a major 5-0 upset victory over Churchill Brothers, Goa, in the National Football League super division at the Salt Lake Stadium here today.

Leaving behind their lacklustre performance at Margao, the Punjab outfit dominated the entire duration of the 90-minute exchange, striking a brace in the first half, followed by three strikes in the later session.

Surjit Singh scored a double, while Jasbir Singh, Daljit Singh and Hardip Saini chipped in with one apiece.

The winners enjoyed total control of the midfield, with experienced Ram Pal playing the gamemaker’s role to perfection and Dipankar Roy constantly feeding the forwards with measured, incisive passes.

Churchill, who had played an attractive brand of soccer at Margao, looked completely in the woods in the day’s match, with their deep defence looking porous and time and again submitting to the guiles of the JCT frontliners.

Churchill, with 11 points from six matches, are now placed second after leaders Salgaocar Sports Club, while JCT move to the third place, having won seven points.

JCT went into the lead in the 19th minute as Jasbir Singh put the ball home following a Ram Pal cross from the left. Churchill defender Anthony Fernandes was partly responsible for the goal as he failed to intercept Ram Pal’s cross even as Jasbir rushed in to do the needful.

Keeping up the tempo, the millmen increased the margin two minutes from the breather. Churchill medio Somatai Shaiza sent a pass into the JCT box, but the hardworking Ram Pal intercepted it and unleashed a long ball for Surjit Singh, who outwitted two defenders and found the target with a 20-yarder.

JCT’s third goal came in the 73rd minute under controversial circumstances. Central defender Daljit Singh moved inside the box from the left, and the Curchill defenders demanded a free kick claiming that Singh had handled the ball.

Seizing the opportunity, Daljit coolly slammed in the ball as the Churchill players waited for the referee’s whistle which never came.

The incensed Churchill players surrounded the referee, T.A. Hakim, but he was unmoved.

Six minutes later, the Goa team suffered a further reverse when an apparently innocuous free kick from Hardip Saini went over the Churchill wall, and as Ghanaian custodian Edward Ansah came out to collect the ball, Surjit Singh played a dummy, which blocked Ansah’s view, and the ball went into the net between his legs.

Surjit Singh completed the tally with a right footer a minute from the final whistle. Top

Rusedski blasts Korda, Seles upset

INDIAN WELLS, (CALIFORNIA), March 9 (Reuters) — Briton Greg Rusedski, accustomed to success here, blasted his way past former Australian Open champion Petr Korda in straight sets in the opening round of the Champions Cup.

The 10th-seeded Rusedski, who lost to Marcelo Rios in last year’s final, utilized his powerful serves and hung tough from the baseline with the Czech in posting a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the $ 2.45 million event yesterday.

Veteran Michael Chang lost to Dutchman Jan Siemerink 7-5, 6-3 while 13th-seeded and recent Australian Open finalist Thomas Enqvist of Sweden and 15th seed Albert Costa of Spain were eliminated.

Enqvist was ousted by talented Russian teenager Marat Safin 6-4, 6-4 and Costa fell 7-5, 6-1 to another victorious Dutchman Paul Haarhuis.

Andre Agassi made an even earlier exit as the ninth-seeded American withdrew yesterday, still suffering from a right hamstring sprain sustained last week at the Scottsdale event.

Rusedski felt sure of himself against the 76th-ranked Korda, repelling the Czech every time he seemed about to challenge the Briton’s formidable power serve.

"I’m starting to feel fit — I’m starting to feel fresh," Rusedski said. "I’m starting to get back to the form I was at last year during this time."

But what Rusedski was most interested in discussing yesterday was the rumour he had heard that Pete Sampras was reconsidering playing in the Davis Cup first round tie at Birmingham, England in April.

"I heard Sampras might be playing because I hear his girlfriend’s in London for six months," said Rusedski. "So, I hear he might be showing up for this Davis Cup tie. That’s the rumour going around, supposedly."

Rusedski’s report could not be immediately substantiated.

Chang, meanwhile, continued a slide that has taken him from third in the world at the end of 1997 to 39th in the rankings following a series of injuries last year.

The only glimmer of hope Chang had in the match came when the 32nd-ranked Siemerink, up two service breaks in the second set, slipped on the court and fell hard on his hip. Although bruised and treated by the trainer, Siemerink was able to close out the match.

But the 27-year-old Chang insists he is not entering the twilight of his career.

"I feel like I know my best tennis is ahead of me", Chang said. "That’s cut and dry for me".

"Unless I start losing every single first round or I don’t feel like going out and working hard, then I’ll know it’s time to call it quits".

Hingis, Rubin advance

Number one Martina Hingis continued her carefree skip through the $ 1.3 million Evert Cup yesterday by dismissing Patty Schnyder 6-1, 6-3 while former top-ranked Monica Seles sank to defeat.

Hingis advanced to a quarterfinals date with American Chanda Rubin, a 6-4, 6-4 upset winner over number seven Amanda Coetzer of South Africa.

Seles was swept out of the tournament by up-and-coming Slovakian Henrieta Nagyova 2-6, 4-6 in the third round.

Hingis had few problems in beating fellow-Swiss Schnyder in just 54 minutes.

Moving swiftly and counterpunching brilliantly against the left-hander, the 18-year-old Hingis forced Schnyder to go for outright winners, which the 20-year-old rarely made.

Schnyder, seeded 10th, made 25 unforced errors against only 13 winners.

"I tried to play aggressive, it’s the only way to beat her", Schnyder said. "I made too many mistakes. I was risking too much. I was dominating a lot of the points, but I missed when I had to go for a winner. She was running down all the balls and reacting well. She could read my game a little."

Hingis, who now has a 2-1 record against Schnyder, said that was the best she had played against her foe.

Schnyder, mired in controversy the past two months after firing her coach and hiring mysterious German nutrition guru Rainer Harnecker, who has put her on a radical diet and claims to be able to cure cancer and AIDS, admits she is not firing on all cylinders.

"I’m less confident," said Schnyder, who won five titles last year. "I’ve had a hard time and I couldn’t concentrate the way I wanted to. But I can handle the situation better right now."

Seles looked completely out of sorts against the 20-year-old Nagyova, a tall, powerful player who made Seles appear slow-footed and confused.

Nagyova, who has won five titles in her career but had never beaten a top-10 player, said it was her biggest victory.

"It was for sure some of the best I played," the 27th-ranked Nagyova said. "I played what I was thinking, some slice, not hitting balls so hard, a little bit clever, I was mentally fit."

Seles was making her first appearance in Indian Wells since 1992, when she won the title. While she reached the semifinals of the 1999 Australian Open, Seles has only played three events this year and hasn’t won a title in five months.

"My mind wasn’t there from the start", Seles said. "She really didn’t give me a chance to get into it. My head wasn’t there, my game wasn’t there, I was just pushing the ball back."

Nagyova’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be 12th seed Sandrine Testud, who beat fellow-Frenchwoman and eighth seed Nathalie Tauziat 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Top

Tendulkar doubtful for opening match

MUMBAI, March 9 (PTI) — Sachin Tendulkar took an Air-India flight this morning to England to get immediate medical attention to his back problem which has become acute, a Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) source revealed today.

Tendulkar, who suffered back spasms during his superb century knock when India were in a hopeless position in the second innings of the first Test against arch-rivals Pakistan in Chennai, is unlikely to take part in at least the first match of the forthcoming triangular series, the source said.

India are to take on Sri Lanka on March 22 at Nagpur in their first round-robin match of the limited overs tournament.

There are already rumours floating that Tendulkar is keen to rest his back by skipping the triangular series in India in order to attain peak fitness for the all-important May 14 to June 20 World Cup in England.

Only last night national selector Shivlal Yadav had revealed in Hyderabad that Tendulkar had turned down the offer of vice-captaincy after an unanimous decision of the selectors to give him the post at Calcutta. Top

Punjab keen to maintain tempo

HYDERABAD, March 9 (PTI) — A keen contest is on cards as 41 teams lock horns for the Rangaswamy Cup in the 59th edition of the Senior National Hockey Championship beginning here tomorrow.

This would be the fourth time the Hyderabad Hockey Association (HHA) is hosting the senior national championship. Earlier, the HHA has hosted this championship in 1954, 1961 and 1979.

This national championship assumes importance in the annals of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) with the ruling body contemplating to change the format of the tournament from next year into zonal basis. This would be the last opportunity for all the teams to assemble at one place.

All the 41-teams have been divided into eight groups and the group winner will qualify for the knock-out stage which will commence from March 24. The semifinals will be played on March 25 with the final being played on March 26.

The defending champions, Indian Railways have a young side. They have in their ranks eight new faces who would be playing for Railways first time in the national championship.

"My team mostly consist of junior India players who have the potential of outplaying the aspirations of rivals and are brimming to put up a gritty show during the course of the championship to retain the title once again" said Balwinder Singh, coach of Indian Railways.

Balwinder rued Punjab and Railways being put on the same group. "We regret to say that why the IHF has grouped Punjab and the Railways in the same group as these are the two teams which normally play in the finals. But now we have to concentrate more to top the pool", he said.

"The match between Punjab and Railways would be the final of this national event in the league phase itself. If only the IHF shifted Punjab into another group, then the fight in the knock-out stage would be interesting", said Balwinder.

National Games champions Punjab, who would take on Rajasthan tomorrow, would be fielding the same team which played in the Manipur Games final with only two changes in the side. Ajit Lakra and Linus Ekka who have joined the BSF will be replaced with left-half Gurusewak Singh and right-out Surjeet Mitta, said Surjeet Singh Grewal, the coach-cum manager of Punjab team.

"Even though we lost to Air-India on goal average in the last nationals held at Bangalore, we are here not to repeat our mistakes and keep our same tempo of National games to topple the aspiration of few teams", asserted Surjeet.

However, the Punjab squad will not have the services of internationals defender Ramandeep Singh, who is nursing an ankle injury, Baljeet Singh Saini, who got injured in Pakistan, and Baljeet Singh Dhillon, also in the injured list.

In spite of their absence my side would cope up with the void. However, the killer instinct in the forward line is slightly effected, observed Surjeet.

Star studded Indian Airlines have players of repute in their squad, which may create a upset in the national event.

"Every match we play is a stepping stone for us and we intend to go for the kill right from the start rather settle for a draw. There is hardly any competition in our group but we will play according to the potential of rival squad", said deputy manager of Indian Airlines and coach Surjeet Kumar.

Lazrus Barla and Mohd Riaz would be playing for the team for the first time and they do not need any impetus to cope up with the other players as they were the regular members of the Indian side, asserted Surjeet.

State Sports Minister S Chandramohan Reddy will inaugurate the championship tomorrow.

Rajat, Yuvraj help India outplay Lanka

NEW DELHI, March 9 (PTI) — All-rounder Rajat Bhatia slammed a punishing century (109) and followed it up with two wickets for 44 runs as India outplayed Sri Lanka by 73 runs to win the third and penultimate under-19 one-day tie and clinch the four-match series by going up 3-0 here today.

Bhatia and explosive left-hander Yuvraj Singh (89) shared a rollicking 139-run fourth wicket stand in only 16.5 overs as India, electing to bat on winning the toss, piled up a massive 307 for five in 50 overs at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground.

Indian bowlers then contained early Sri Lankan enterprise to restrict them to 234 for seven wickets.

The Indian colts, who had won both the ties at Gwalior with ease, maintained their supremacy as Sri Lanka, despite defiance by openers Jehan Mubarak (33) and Ian Daniels (40), and Prasana Jayawardene (60 - 67 b,2x4,1x6), were never in the run. The final tie will be played here on March 11.

Bhatia (109 - 132 b, 195 m, 7x4, 2x6), the 19-year-old Delhi lad who shifted to Tamil Nadu seeking better openings, neatly anchored the innings with upcoming Uttar Pradesh bat Mohd Kaif (38 - 47 b,6x4) and skipper Reetinder Sodhi (27) before Yuvraj came on the scene in the 29th over.

The explosive batsman, son of former Test paceman Yograj Singh, cut the attack to shreds, scoring 89 off 55 balls (91 m, 8x4, 5x6), which included three successive sixes off Chamara Silva in an over that went for 22 runs.Top

Baseball great Dimaggio dead

MIAMI, March 9 (AFP) — Baseball legend Joe Dimaggio, former husband of Marilyn Monroe, died at 84, according to his lawyer's office here.

A spokeswoman at the office of lawyer Morris Engelberg confirmed news reports that the baseball star had died.

Although he was able to leave hospital recently, Dimaggio reportedly never recovered from lung cancer surgery and related pneumonia and was apparently too weak to undergo chemotherapy.

Dimaggio was released last month after a 99-day hospital stay at memorial regional hospital in Florida.

Dimaggio, known as the "Yankee Clipper," patrolled centre field for the New York Yankees from the 1930s until the early 1950s, and established one of baseball's most revered records, a 56 games hitting streak in 1941.Top

Durjai Shastri outboxes Hayat

NEW DELHI, March 9 (PTI) — Durjai Shastri exacted revenge for his National Games loss by edging out Hayat Singh to win the lightmiddle weight title with a narrow points verdict as team "India yellow" took the honours by winning four of the six senior titles decided in the VI YMCA International Boxing Championship here today.

Haryana’s Durjai Shastri had lost to Services pugilist Hayat Singh 9-10 at Imphal last month, but today managed to land some solid blows late in the fourth and final round of a scrappy encounter which could have gone either way. Shastri earned a 24-21 points win over his "India-Pink" rival.

On a fairly low-key day, lightwelter A Haridas Singh and middleweight Jeevan Fernandes of India Yellow hardly worked a sweat to win their finals.

Haridas gained a walkover against K. Sanjit Singh (Ind-P), who was nursing a cut under his right eye. Fernandes wrapped up his final clash against Dorji of Bhutan within few seconds of the start with the latter willingly taking a couple of blows to be counted out.

But boxers from India-Pink were on top sweeping to all three sub-junior titles and picking up two of the four in the junior section on the penultimate day of competition at the Jaisingh road complex here.Top

Zaman was stretched by qualifier Manoj Kumar (TN) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-3 in a match that lasted over two hours.

Zaman saved two set points, drew level at 5-5 and then sent the set into the tie-break, which Manoj won 7-6 (7-4). The other two sets were wrapped up by Zaman, who exhibited better court movements and a tiring Manoj was unable to keep pace.
