Protest:
Members of the Yuva Beopar Mandal staged a dharna in front of the Municipal Council's office on Tuesday. They shouted slogans against Mr Balramji Dass Tandon, Minister for Local Bodies, Punjab. They were protesting against the hike in house tax.

BATHINDA
Seminar:
The Shift Engineers Guild, Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant, organised a seminar on "Stress Management" at Lehra Mohabat, 23 km from here, on Saturday. Dr Prem Kumar, Head, School of Management, Guru Kashi Campus, Talwandi Sabo, and Dr Agyajit Singh, Head, Department of Psychology, Punjabi University, Patiala, were present on the occasion.

HOSHIARPUR
Sarpanch murdered:
Mr Santokh Singh, Sarpanch of Mangarh village, was murdered at his house allegedly by five persons, including one women, on Sunday. He died on a way to a hospital. The police has registered a case on a complaint of his widow under Section 302, 148 and 149, IPC.

Liquor seized: The police seized 652 bottles of illicit liquor from a four-wheeler and arrested six women and a driver. Mr Jaswant Singh, SHO, Tanda police station, said the liquor was seized during a checking near Darapur on Monday. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against them. The arrested women belonging to Sansi tribe.

KHARAR
Police association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Police Pensioners Welfare Association, Ropar district: Chairman — Mr Baldev Singh Bains; Secretary — Mr Mohinder Singh Bajwa; Senior Vice-President — Mr Pishori Lal Kharar; and Treasurer — Mr Nasib Singh.

LUDHIANA
Pensioners' demand:
The Government Pensioners Association in a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, has urged the Finance Department to direct the authorities concerned to pay travel concession equal to one month's pension, including the increased portion of pension, to all those pensioners whose pension has gone up by 5 per cent and 10 per cent at the attainment of 70 and 80 years of age.

BKU’s plea: The Bharti Kisan Union has demanded that the government should waive off the loans taken by the farmers, keeping in view the recent suicide incidents by farmers. This demand was raised at a state-level meeting of the union held here on Monday under the chairmanship of Mr Ajmer Singh Lakhowal.

The local Red Cross has selected Mr Kamaljit Singh Khanna, an employee working in the office of the Civil Surgeon, and Mr Inderjit Singh, an employee of the Public Relations Department, PSEB, for a three-day workshop on "Disaster Management" being organised by the Red Cross at Amritsar from Wednesday.

Two pistols seized:
Two .315 bore pistols and two cartridges were seized allegedly from Avtar Singh, alias Raju, of Panam village in Garhshankar block, and Balbir Ram of Rasulpur village in Banga block on Sunday during a naka near Panshta.

Condoled: The Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association, at a meeting here on Tuesday condoled the death of J.C. Verma, a senior member of the association, who died recently. Several office-bearers of the association, including Mr H.R. Khetrapal, Mr L.H. Naqvi, Mr G.R.P. Singh and Mr Malik-us-Islam, lauded the services of the veteran engineer to the society.

Alleged: Mr Navin Pun, a resident of Sector 47 has alleged that a cold drink bottle bought by him from the Sector 47 market contained foreign matter. While showing the bottle to the TNS, he said he was shocked to find a cluster of algae around the neck of the bottle when he was about to open it.

Consumer Day: Consumer Forum of Chandigarh in collaboration with Chandigarh Administration and Municipal Corporation is celebrating the World Consumer Day by organising a ‘Consumer Awareness Mela’ from March 13 to 16 in Nehru Park, Sector 22-B, Captain Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister of Punjab will inaugurate it on March 14. The timings of the mela will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. According to a release issued here today, the highlights of the programme will be khula manch programmes on telecommunication, LPG, PDS and other utility services, free medical check-up camps for senior citizens, talks on citizen charter and a healthy baby contest. Mr K.K. Adiwal, Mayor of the MC will preside over the prize distribution function and closing ceremony.

Liquor vends' auction: The auction of liquor vends of two excise districts of Faridabad, east and west, will be held in Sector 12 for the next financial year on March 13. The number of vends have been increased from 118 to 135 for this year.

HISAR
Quiz contest results:
Dayanand College , Hisar, won the Kurukshetra University Inter-Zonal Quiz Championship which concluded at Sirsa on Monday. CMK National Girls College, Sirsa, and the College of Education, Kurukshetra, secured second and third positions, respectively, according to Mr Subhash Sharma, Principal, Dayanand College. These competitions were organised by the Youth and Cultural Affairs Department in which as many as 12 teams participated. Three students, Surender Singh Yadav, Vijay Pal and Mohit Mahipal, represented the winners team.

PANIPAT
Six arrested:
The local police has arrested six members of an inter-state gang who were allegedly planning to loot a wine shop near the G.T. Road and seized a Maruti van, one pistol, eight cartridges, three knives and one iron rod from them, Mr Manoj Yadav, SP, said here on Monday. The arrested were identified as Mahender, Ghanshyam, Charan Singh, Dharambir and Mangeram.

SIRSA
One arrested:
Subhash Chander of Banawani village in Rajasthan, who was absconding for the past 20 years in a fraud case registered against him under Section 420, IPC, was arrested on Monday Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Tuesday.

Attacked: Anguri Devi (20), a local resident of J.J. Colony, was injured when she was allegedly attacked by her brother-in-law at her house on Monday. She was admitted to the Civil Hospital. The cause of assault was some family dispute. No arrest has been made so far.

Drowned: Prince (8) of Mandi Dabwali was reportedly drowned in a water tank at his house on Monday. According to sources, he was playing alone when the incident occurred. The body was taken out after four hours when his parents reached the home.

SONEPAT
One held:
The Rai police has arrested Jagbir of Jatheri village for allegedly involving in number of crimes in this district and in Delhi, Mr K. Selvraj, SSP, said here on Sunday. He said a revolver and three cartridges have been recovered from his possession.

Reinstated: The Haryana Government has reinstated Mr M.P. Kaushik as Block Development and Panchayat Officer, Ganaur. According to official sources, the allegations levelled against him were not proved.top

BILASPUR
Drinking water scheme:
A sum of Rs 16 lakh will be spent for providing drinking water to Barthin village and adjoining areas. This was announced by the Himachal Minister for Cooperatives, Mr Rikhiram Kondal, while laying a foundation stone of the PWD rest house at Barthin on Sunday.

Fire: Five houses and two cow-sheds were gutted in a fire at Palsed village in Lehadi Gram Panchayat in Changar area on Sunday. One buffalo was reported to be burnt and one person injured.

SOLAN
Campaign:
Himachal Pradesh Mahila Congress chief, Krishna Mohini called upon her party activists to launch a door to door campaign for detecting cases of crimes against women. She said this here on Sunday while taking to mediapersons. She said all such cases be brought to the notice of the authorities concerned for action.
