FARIDKOT
Old age home:
The district Red Cross Society has opened an old age home here. Initially it will admit 25 members but will admit more later on. Each enrolled member will have to pay Rs 1,000 per month, the remaining expenses will be borne by the society. However, poor will be provided aid free of cost.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Camp:
A large number of residents of Sirhind town, particularly youths, gathered to donate blood at a blood donation camp for the soldiers wounded at Kargil. The camp organised by Bharat Vikas Parishad on Sunday was conducted by the blood supply unit of Military Hospital, Ambala. Only 100 units were collected and more than 400 donors were refused due to want of adequate storage facility.

FEROZEPORE
Graft case:
The DSP (Vigilance), Mr Sukhdev Singh, has caught an FCI Quality Inspector, Naresh Kumar, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from Mr Rajinder Singh of Jalalabad. According to the SP (Vigilance), Ferozepore range, Mr Hardial Singh Mann, the alleged accused was getting a bribe for giving a certificate of double machine stitching bill of nearly Rs 30,042 for contractorship to the complainant. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered.

LUDHIANA
Camp:
A blood donation camp was organised at the IndusInd Bank. Over 80 donors donated blood at the camp which was inaugurated by Mr K.Siva Prasad. Additional Deputy Commissioner.

MALERKOTLA
Resentment:
The Gazetted School Officers Association, Punjab, in a memorandum to the Chief Minister of the state, expressed resentment against the move of Minister of School Education, Punjab to appoint non-PES employees at the post of Assistant Director in the office of DPI(S) which belongs to PES class II. In a press note issued here on Sunday, Mr Joginder Singh Aulakh, President of the association, said that the posts of Assistant Director should be filled from among the PES-II officers under the rules.

Poppy husk seized: The local police has seized nine bags of poppy husk. According to Mr Surinder Singh Saini, DSP, a police party led by Sub-Inspector Narain Singh on Saturday during a Naka at Dasoudasingh wala village, seized nine bags of poppy husk from a truck and arrested driver Hakam Singh. Another person Ajaib Singh escaped.

Demanded: Only one student out of 61 of Government High School, Mahamadpur in Malerkotla subdivision, has been declared pass in the matriculation exam conducted by the PSEB in March' 99. Residents of the Mahamadpur village have demanded the transfer of the whole staff of the school in view of the bad result of Class X of the school.

PATIALA
Dowry death:
The Kotwali police registered a case under Section 304 B against husband Anil Kumar and in-laws Jai Parkash and Prem Lata of Pooja Rani (22) for burning her to death for want of dowry on Friday on a complaint filed by her parents. Pooja Rani leaves behind a six-month-old daughter.

PHAGWARA
Suicides:
A 14-year-old boy Bharat Bhushan of Hadiabad near here committed suicide on Friday by consuming a poisonous substance after his failure in Matric, according to a report on Saturday. In another case, a married woman committed suicide after consuming pesticide here on Friday.

Urged: The Indian Medical Association on Sunday urged the Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences to start correspondence postgraduate certificate courses (distant learning) in different subjects since serving practising doctors were unable to leave work and get conversant with latest changes. In a representation, Dr Raman Aggarwal, Honorary Secretary of the academic wing of IMA, Punjab, said university may approve various hospitals and nursing homes for giving practical training to doctors joining correspondence courses.

Two killed: Ashwani Kumar Abrol (35) was run over and killed under a train while crossing railway track here on Saturday. He belonged to Kapurthala. In another incident an unidentified middle-aged pedestrian was crushed to death by a vehicle on the GT Road, near here.

SANGRUR
Water shortage:
Resentment continues to prevail among residents of Sunam town, 15 km from here, over the failure of the Punjab Government to provide them adequate supply of piped drinking water. Nearly 60 per cent population of the town has been drinking water, the purity of which is not guaranteed as it has not been tested by any competent authority, admit official sources. The supply in Indira Basti, on Lehra road, Patiala road, in old Sunam town and several newly developed areas is either not available or partially available, say official sources.

Appointed:
Mr Paramjit Singh Bhucher has been appointed receiver of the Guudwara Sant Puri Sahib Gandiwind (Sarai) by the Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission.

Water supply:
Mr Pardeep Chaudhary, General Secretary of the Indian National Lok Dal, has expressed concern over the supply of contaminated water for drinking purposes in the villages falling in the Kalka — Raitan belt. He said this after conducting a tour of the affected villages on Sunday.

HISAR
Training course:
A two-week training course on project planning concluded at CCS, Haryana Agricultural University. Mr Dharamvir, Commissioner, Hisar division and Vice- Chancellor of Guru Jambeshwar University, said no project would yield the expected results unless the manpower involved in its implementation was fully trained. The course conducted by the Academy of Agricultural Research and Educational Management was meant for officers of the state Agriculture Department.

Power shortage: The Pradesh Congress Committee executive member, Ms Shalini Atri, has expressed concern over the frequent power failures in the city. In a statement, she said that while on one hand the government was claiming to provide round the clock power to people from July 1, it was unable to provide regular power supply. She said that in most of the rural areas, the powercuts lasted for 12 hours.

KURUKSHETRA
Offer:
Ex-Army servicemen of this district, in a unanimously passed resolution at an ex-army servicemen sammelan held at Sainik Rest House here on Saturday offered the services of all able-bodied ex-servicemen for the security of country. Stating this here on Sunday, Member, Haryana Rajya Sainik Board and President, Haryana Ex-Servicemen League, Kurukshetra, Colonel Pratap Singh (retd), said the sammelan also paid rich tributes to those soldiers who sacrificed their lives in Kargil.

ROHTAK
Liquor seized:
The Jhajjar police seized over 3500 bottles of Indian-made-foreign liquor (IMFL) being smuggled in a Canter on Friday and arrested two persons, including the Canter driver, besides impounding the vehicle.

Cases solved: The district police has claimed to have solved two cases of dacoity and 11 cases of snatching and recovered stolen property worth Rs 3.95 lakh during the past month. Mr P.K.Agrawal, SSP, said 3,613 bottles of illicit liquor, 1,262 bottles of English wine and 2,034 liquor pouches were recovered and 33 cases were registered in this connection. Besides, four country-made pistols and two revolvers were seized and nine cases were registered under the Arms Act during the period.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the HUDA Karamchari Maha Sangh: President- Mr Ishwar Singh; Vice-Presidents — Mr Balraj Singh and Mr Tejbir Singh; Secretary — Mr Ajmer Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Girwar Singh.

SIRSA
Bail rejected:
Mr K.K.Chopra, Additional District and Sessions Judge, rejected anticipatory bail applications of Kalu Ram of Talwara village in this district his two sons, two daughters and two sons-in-law here on Saturday. A criminal case was registered against them under Sections 323,324,452,34, IPC, at Ellenabad police station on June 7, on a complaint lodged by Baga Ram of the same village in which he alleged that he was seriously injured with sharp-edged weapons by his brother accused Kalu Ram and his six family members. The Judge has also summoned Dr Vijay Kumar Mehta of Primary Health Centre Ellenabad on charge of issuing a false medico-legal report in this case.

Girls recovered: The Dabwali police recovered two teenaged sisters of Panniwala Morikan village in this district from Katkapura on Saturday. In a complaint lodged with the police Haken Singh, father of girls, alleged Sukhvant Kaur, sister of his wife and her husband in connivance with their sons Iqbal Singh and Harminder Singh kidnapped the victims on May 31 and also raped them. The police has registered a case under Sections 363,366,376,34, IPC and has arrested Sukhvant Kaur, her husband Gurdev Singh and Iqbal Singh and Harminder Singh.

Sangh: Following have been elected office-bearers of the Haryana Government Chalak Sangh, local unit: President — Mr Kishori Lal Mehta; Senior-Vice-President — Mr Rajbir Singh; Vice-President — Mr Prithipal; General Secretary — Mr Karish Singh; Joint Secretary — Mr Jasvir Singh and Treasurer — Mr Ravinder Kumar.

Dead: Subhash Chander, an electrician with the Haryana Roadways died at Civil Hospital here on Saturday. According to sources he reportedly consumed some poisonous substance taken from a medical store here on Wednesday last when he was returning back to his house from his duty and was hospitalised, where he died later.

SONEPAT
Threat:
Mr Ramesh Dagar, Chairman of the Sonepat Zila Parishad, along with 16 other members, has decided to resign in protest against the failure of the state government to enforce the Panchayati Raj Act effectively. According to sources, the state government or the district administration so far had not received the resignation letters of Mr Dagar and others. However, sources close to Mr Dagar, have stated that if the state government failed to enforce the Act effectively, these resignations would be sent to the Haryana Governor, Mr Mahabir Prasad, after a week.

Himachal Briefs
KANGRA
Target:
The Himachal Pradesh Government has fixed a target of 17.20 lakh tonnes for the production of the foodgrains during the current financial year of which 9.90 lakh tonnes would be produced during the kharif season and the rest during the rabi season. Besides 3,500 metric tonnes of the oil seeds would also be produced during the kharif season. The Agriculture Minister, Mr Vidya Sagar said in a press conference here on Saturday the government was also eager to boost the vegetable and the cash crop production in the state.

MANDI
Held:
Mohinder Kumar was arrested on Sunday for killing a barking deer, a rare species now getting extinct in the lower hills of the state. Mr Vineet Kumar, DFO-cum-Wildlife Warden, Mandi, told mediapersons that a team of forest officials headed by Range Officer Sadar, Mr P.L.Gupta, caught the accused red-handed while de-skinning the animal and was handed over to the police along with the meat skin and the gun. A case has been registered under the Wild Life Protection Act and Arms Act for want of a gun licence.
