Mohun Bagan ground Air-India CALCUTTA, Jan 10 (PTI) Defending champions Mohun Bagan shrugged off their lethargy to carve out a fluent 2-0 victory over Air-India in a group-A match of the third National Football League at the Salt Lake Stadium here today. Mercurial striker I.M. Vijayan showed that he was fast returning to shape after an extended lay off, to fire in both the goals in the action-packed second session and help his team earn full points. The local giants, who were held to a goal-less draw by JCT in their opening match in Delhi, began rather tentatively in the initial stages but found their bearing after the interval, as Vijayan swung the match in their favour with two brilliant goals in a four-minute blitzkrieg. Required to put up a far more inspired performance, the home team shot into the lead in the 12th minute of the second half with Vijayan producing a crisp header from inside the box off a centre from substitute Reazul Mustafa, taking the Air-India defence by surprise. Four minutes later, Vijayan inflicted another blow as he broke through the defence and unleashed a left-footed volley to find the target again, triggering off another round of celebrations among the nearly 20,000 spectators who thronged the galleries. The second goal was the result of a fast counter attack which saw Debjit Ghosh sending the ball towards Vijayan. The lanky striker outwitted defenders with deft footwork before taking an attempt at the goal. Stopper Ajay Acharya rushed towards him, but only managed to deflect the ball into the goal. Mohun Bagan could have won by a much bigger margin had they not squandered all the scoring opportunities that came their way; Vijayan being the offender on two occasions. Air-India, who had suffered a 0-3 defeat against debutants Tollygunge Aggragami in their opening match, relied on a defensive game to thwart Bagan attacks, but paid the price for leaving the talented Vijayan unmarked. With the other striker Chima Okerie being tightly marked by Air- Indias Khalid Jamil right through the contest, Vijayan found a lot of room for manouvering inside the rival defence on a number of occasions. The opening session saw the local giants struggling a bit to find rhythm, but the introduction of Yonam Bassim and Reazul Mustafa immediately after the lemon break pepped up the team, which suddenly looked quite transformed with a flurry of attacks from both the flanks. The speedy Bassim, who brought back some vigour into the team, took control of the midfield and kept the forwards busy with controlled through passes, while medio Amit Das also excelled in the second half. FC Kochin win Medio Noel Wilson drew first blood for FC Kochin through a penalty conversion in the 9th minute while Adewale Fatai brought about parity for the bankmen in the 25th minute. The Kochin team forged ahead through Abu Jomo in the 45th minute, while striker Mohammed Shafeeq struck twice in the 62nd and 80th minute and Najeeb completed the tally just before the final whistle. East Bengal held Both Salgaocar and last years runners-up East Bengal have four points each after two matches as both the teams won their opening matches against Mahindra and Mahindra and FC Kochin respectively. In the first half, dominated by the Calcuttan team, their medios Basudeb Mondal and Carlton Chapman, working a good combination, initiated several moves and had a chance early in the match. Chapman broke the defence with a through pass but Biswas fumbled in taking the shot at the goal on the run. East Bengal, who had lost to Salgaocar at the same venue in last years league, kept on probing the rival defence in the first half with a series of passes. They missed another close chance in the 32nd minute when a Mondal shot from the top of the box was saved by Salgaocar custodian Jude Siddi. Salgaocar slowly settled down and came into their own in the last 10 minutes and could have surged ahead in the 40th minute had veteran Bruno Cutinho directed his shot off a Venkatesh pass inside the box correctly. After the break, Salgaocar continued to hold the upper edge. On the other side, star forward Baichung Bhutia being tightly marked, East Bengal moves lacked penetration. |
India-Pak series on, says
official NEW DELHI, Jan 10 The cricket series between India and Pakistan, scheduled after a lapse of 11 years from January 21, is on as far as the Indian Government is concerned. This is what a senior Home Ministry official asserted here today saying "we are all ready to receive warmly the Pakistan team and we will provide them an unprecedented security cover at the playing arenas and outside as also comforts to help them give off their best under normal conditions". When told that Pakistan players were wary of playing under tension, he quickly interrupted to say: "Look, that is their problem. But we will see to it that healthy environment is provided to players to play their natural game, as it should be for international contests". The Home Ministry official, a cricket fanatic, said: "We have been assigned to do a job which we will do thoroughly but if the Pakistan players have their own misgivings, we cannot help it". When pointed out that the Indian players' confidence was equally flimsy because of the forthcoming World Cup, he said: "If the teams chicken out because of their own fear, we cant motivate them through security". "Can we?" he asked. A brief telephonic conversation with the Home Ministry official re-emphasised one thing that neither India nor Pakistan were willing to lose the series. This is one important aspect. What is still more vital is that some senior players on either side of the border feel that their failure in the series will mean their getting a boot from the World Cup in May-June in England and therefore they are not keen for the series to go on, as scheduled. Regardless of the final decision on the series, the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) authorities are going ahead with preparation for the first Test starting here on January 28. The wicket has been repaired and all arrangements have been made for the match, said the DDCAs new president Ram Babu Gupta, a former Test umpire, here today. The third floor of the new building will be reserved for corporate houses in which each ticket will carry a price of Rs 12,000. The price for each ticket on the first floor will be Rs 6,000 while the second floor stands reserved for media persons, both print and electronic. The rates for tickets for other enclosures are: pavilion Rs 2500 (daily Rs 700), Special Rs 1500 (Rs 400 daily), general Rs 500 (daily Rs 150) and members of (league) Rs 300. The members of the DDCA will, however, get passes, as before. "But we will be careful in issuing passes and tickets", said Mr Gupta. The DDCA today officially got back the new club house which was hitherto in possession of the special committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, according to Mr Gupta. "This is a significant development", he said. |
England win by seven runs BRISBANE, Jan 10 (Reuters) Alan Mullally produced a career-best performance to lead England to a thrilling win over Australia in the opening World Series match today. The left-arm paceman took four for 18, his best figures in one-day internationals, to steer England to victory by a faster run rate in a rain-affected match at the Gabba ground. Chasing a revised target of 153 runs off 36 overs after rain delayed the start of their innings, Australia were restricted to 145 for nine. England, who batted first after captain Alec Stewart won the toss, had earlier struggled to 178 for eight from their full allotment of 50 overs. Michael Bevan hit 56 and was the only player on either side to score a half-century but he was let down by his team mates. Mark Waugh and Brendon Julian were the next highest for Australia, each making 23. There was little hint of trouble for Australia as Waugh and Adam Gilchrist comfortably put on 24 for the first wicket but then Mullally struck. The Englishmans figures included a spell of four for 12 in the space of 27 deliveries. His previous best was three for 29 against Zimbabwe in Harare two years ago. Three of Mullallys wickets coincided with a dramatic Australian collapse of four wickets for the addition of just two runs as they fell to 48 for five. England A.Stewart lbw b Dale 0 V. Match-fixing, widespread, thinks Mahmood CHRISTCHURCH, Jan 10 (AFP) Betting and bribery in cricket may be widespread, the Pakistan cricket board chairman Khalid Mahmood said here today. Mahmood, here for the International Cricket Councils executive board meeting which is grappling with the problem of corruption, hinted match-fixing may not be confined to his own country. "Match-fixing, betting is an issue we are currently investigating and this can be more widespread than perceived to be," he said. Former Pakistan captains Wasim Akram and Salim Malik, Ejaz Ahmed, Mushtaq Ahmed and Waqar Younis are all under investigation by a judicial commission. ICC chairman Sir Clyde Walcott of the West Indies said a draft proposal on match-fixing was being prepared. "Then well take some decisions," added Walcott, standing in for Indias Jagmohan Dalmiya. The ICCs biggest problem in attempting to root out corruption is that it possesses little genuine power its constitution only allows recommendations, not action. Its chief executive David Richards said the international body must be empowered to make tough decisions. "We have a vital role to play in these bribery issues, but whats up for debate is if the ICC has jurisdiction in sovereign countries if there is criminality involved." None of the nine test-playing countries were believed to be comfortable with the idea of the ICC intervening in their territory. Pakistan judge Malik Mohammad Gayyum has adjourned his hearing till January 16 while he hears from his representatives who cross-examined Warne and Mark Waugh in Melbourne on Friday and yesterday. Waugh, Warne and another Australian player, Tim May alleged, Malik offered them $ 200,000 to throw a match during Australias 1995 tour of Pakistan. But Warne and Waugh blotted their copybook when the Australian Cricket Board was forced to admit last month they had been fined for taking $ 3,000 from an Indian bookmaker for pitch and weather information five years ago. Mahmood said he would have appreciated his boards being informed about the bookmakers approach when Waugh gave evidence to the judicial commission in Lahore in October. "There was a certain lack of communication regarding specific problems," he said. "Because of the accusations, I thought we could also have been informed. "He was advised by the ACB to tell the truth and it was up to his discretion to say what he felt appropriate," Mahmood added. But he said current ACB chairman Denis Rogers had cleared up the misunderstandings. Rogers said: "We are not bitter enemies". We have established a close relationship thats unshakeable. "There no doubt that as a result of our discussions we have put in place some protocols to make sure this doesnt happen again". Mahmood said the accusations had been damaging for cricket and he was eager to see the government-appointed commission produce its findings. "The damage of these allegations has been substantial," he said. "The players cant concentrate on their cricket, they have to face charges and examine each other". Mahmood said it was up to the Pakistani government whether it wanted to release the findings in their entirety or if it wanted to ask the PCB to take action. "We are very keen this inquiry is brought to its legal conclusion and if accusations are proved then action will be taken," he added. |

While Kunte crushed Mexican IM Russek Gail in the Alapin variation in 28 moves, IM K. Sasikiran took the first session to overcome Esnaola in scotch opening. D.V. Tollygunge take on Churchill today CALCUTTA, Jan 10 (PTI) Boosted by a convincing victory in their opening match, debutants Tollygunge Aggragami would be keen to capitalise on home advantage when they clash with Churchill Brothers in a group-A match of the third National Football League here tomorrow. The local team played an organised game to thrash a depleted Air-India 3-0 in their opening match and coach Amal Dutta would be hoping that the players keep up the good work and earn full points again on the morrow. Duttas much-publicised "box system" paid dividends against Air-India as the team struck thrice in quick succession in the second session but it remains to be seen whether they can make any impact against stronger outfits. Churchill Brothers, who finished runners up in the Goan league, did reasonably well to hold Dempo to a goalless draw in their opening match at Margao and would have to play tight in what promises to be a keenly contested affair. The Goan outfit were on the verge of being relegated from the high-profile league along with Mahindra and Mahindra after their poor show in the last edition, but the All-India Football Federations new format this year gave them the opportunity to play with the top teams again. The team is determined to turn a new leaf under coach Danny MacLen who has infused a sense of order and discipline in their game. Tollygunge Aggragami would be depending on their Sri Lankan recruit Roshan Pereira to deliver the goods while striker Nwakanma Chibuzor has shown the willingness to work hard despite his age. Pereira not only scored two goals in the opening match but also managed to break the defence cordon time and again and would be the real danger for the Goans. Coach Dutta, while praising Pereira after the first match, had said that the Sri Lankan had a big role to play in his "box system" strategy. The Tollygunge midfielders, comprising Biswarup Bisu, Chandan Das, Felix Abayomi and Bastab Roy, put up a decent performance in the first match as they supported the strikers well. The hard-working Bisu played a stellar role in the midfield and would be required to take the load right through the championship. Awoyemi Isiaka, Hussain Mustafi, Sibsankar Santra and Srikrishna Ghosh were quite capable to ward off the rival attacks. Churchill would be
depending on their Ghanian recruit Philip Mansah to score
the goals while the nimble-footed Somatai Saiza and Cyril
Barreto were also capable of producing some brilliant
goals on their day. |
Johl goes down fighting NOIDA, Jan 10 Amandeep Johl (Chandigarh), six strokes in arrears in the morning, fought gallantly before going down to Vijay Kumar on the final hole (72nd) in the ONGC-NOIDA Golf Championship here today. Amandeep, all motivated and keyed up in murky weather conditions, played a superb round of a level-par 72 to get an aggregate of 297. But his determined bid saw him lose the title to Vijay Kumar who, despite five over 77, won it by a solitary stroke (aggregate 296). Jyoti Randhawa finished third with an aggregate of 299. He also played a fine round of a level-par 72, as Amandeep. It was a touch and go between two pros Vijay was experienced and Amandeep promising. Eventually, Vijay triumphed more because of luck smiling on him than his merit or skill. Vijay Kumar (Lucknow), leading by six strokes, made a series of bogies and forfeited advantage to his rivals, Amandeep and Randhawa. But his luck befriended him on the final hole when he made a birdie. The Lucknow pro played five over 77 to aggregate eight over 296 for four rounds, while the SAIL-sponsored Johl finished at nine over 297. Vijay got Rs 83,300, Johl Rs 55,550 for their stupendous efforts. Vijay Kumar said that it was one of the toughest tournaments that he had won, while Amandeep said that he was so close to the title and yet so far away. Johl, six strokes behind when the final round began, played a grand 16 holes as he jumped to lead by two strokes (70th). But he became tense when the title was in sight for him. He made bogies on the 17th and 18th, while Vijay Kumar sank in a 15-footer putt for birdie to bag the title. In the front nine, Johl was steady and made birdies on the 6th and the 8th. Vijay Kumar struck a bad patch and surrendered much of the advantage that he enjoyed from the start of the final round. This was because Vijay Kumar was unable to play consistently his short game. He made bogies on the first, fourth, fifth and ninth. After another bogey on the 11th, he stood a level with Johl at eight over. Vijays tee shot landed on the water hazar on the par-4 12th. Then a superb putt lipped out from the 15th feet to give him yet another bogey. But Johl played steadily to get into a two-stroke lead. On the 17th, Johls second shot trickled behind a tree. He failed to sink a difficult four-foot putt. He dropped a stroke on this hole. As if this was not enough, his approach shot on the 18th veered left and got plugged into the bunker. He finally ended with a bogey. |
