FARIDKOT
Adarsh schools: The Punjab Government will spend Rs 5.25 crore to improve the quality of education in six Adarsh Public schools during the next financial year. Every teacher of these institutions would be sent to reputed public schools in different parts of the country to make them aware about new methods of teaching. This was stated by Gurdev Singh Badal Agricultural Minister presiding over the annual prize distribution function of local MRSD Senior Secondary School on Saturday. The minister said one more such institution would be opened at Kotbhai village in Muktsar district.

LPG shortage: Resentment prevails among the local LPG consumers on the shortage and delay in the supply of refills for the past nearly two months. A delay of 10 to 12 days is usual.

GURDASPUR
NSS camp: An eight-day NSS camp concluded on Saturday. More than 65 volunteers from Government Senior Secondary School here participated. Ms Santokh Khosla, senior teacher, was the in charge.

Case registered : The police on Sunday arrested Mahana Masih, Mukhtiar Masih and Jamal Masih on a charge of stealing and killing a cow of Amar Nath. A case under Sections 379, IPC and 4/5 of the Cow Slaughter Act has been registered against them.

Ban : Mr S.K. Sandhu, District Magistrate, has banned the movement of persons from the international border to the border security fencing from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The ban will remain in force till March 6. This order will not be enforceable on the G T Road running from the border barrier to Gurdaspur. However, armed personnel are exempted from this ban.

Sangat darshan : As many as 80 of the 100 complaints were solved on the spot in a "sangat darshan" held at Bhungal Bandani village on Saturday. Mr Mohan Lal, Forest Minister, was the chief guest while Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, presided. The minister said Rs 3.7 crore and Rs 1.5 crore had been sanctioned for the extension of drinking waterfacility and repair of link roads, respectively, in Dhar subdivision.

HOSHIARPUR
Criticised: The Punjab Clinical Laboratories Association in a press note issued on Saturday said the government should constitute a separate council for medical technologists like nursing, pharmacy and homoeopathy councils.

KHANNA
Namdhari martyrs: A two-day state-level function will be organised at Malerkotla on January 17 and 18 in memory of Kuka Namdhari martyrs. Mr Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab, will preside. This was stated by Mr Dalip Singh, Press Secretary, Namdhari Darbar here on Saturday.

School function : The annual function of the local A.S. Senior Secondary School was held here on Sunday. Mr S.S. Sodhi, SSP, Nawanshahr, was the chief guest.

Bar association : The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Bar Association : President — Mr Munish Khanna; Vice-President — Mr S.S. Dhaliwal; and Secretary — Mr K.S. Uppal.

LUDHIANA
Traffic control: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Goel, has advised the district transport officer and the Traffic Police at a meeting of the district Traffic Control Committee to deal strictly with traffic rule violators. Mr Goel, came down heavily on government vehicles not following the rules and said they should also be brought to book. He said, barring the Chief Minister and the Governor, no other VIP or government official should be allowed to cross the red light. The Deputy Commissioner also said the cars supporting blue number plates or red lights unofficially be challaned.

NAWANSHAHR
Best bhangra team: The bhangra team of the local J.S.F.F. Khalsa High School has won the first prize in the state-level competitions organised by the Punjab School Education Board at Bhaini Sahib, according to Mr Baldev Singh Pabla, Headmaster of the school.

Science magazine: Prof B.S. Balli, DPRO, released the first colour issue of a Punjabi magazine "Vighayan Jyoti" here on Friday. He praised the efforts of the editorial board of the magazine for publishing a science magazine in Punjabi language with a view to promote scientific attitude among the masses.

PATIALA
Deputation: A deputation of the Punjab Government College Teachers' Association led by its President Dr P.S. Bhatti and General Secretary, Prof Bhag Singh has met the Finance Minister, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, the Principal Secretary, Mr Rajan Kashyap, the Principal Secretary Higher Education, Mr G.P.S. Sahi, and sought an early implementation of new pay scales as recommended by the UGC.

Charge taken over: Mr Gagandeep Singh assumed office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) here on Saturday. Earlier he was posted at Ludhiana as Subdivisional Magistrate. Meanwhile, Mr Avtar Chand Sharma has taken over as District Transport Officer here.

Strike: The local unit of All India Bank Officer's Confederation has decided to observe a strike on January 12 on the call given by the United Forum of Bank Unions, according to a press note issued by Confederation 's Treasurer R.P. Singh here on Saturday. The bank officers and employees are demanding wage revision.

Awards: The Director, of the Punjab Language Department, Mr M.L. Hasija, said here that the Language Department had constituted three best printing awards to be awarded to publishers printing in Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu. It had chosen Lok Sahit Publication, Amritsar for Guru Ram Dass biography and Philosophy ( Punjabi), VVP Publishers, Patiala, for "Andheron Ka Pratibimb" ( Hindi) and Darpan Publication Pathankot for "Jaibay Sukhan" (Urdu). Mr Hasija said the award includes Rs 2500 in cash and a plaque.top

FATEHABAD
Convicted : The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr Diwan Chand, has awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 to Karan Singh of Sirdhan village in this district. He was booked under Sections 302, 148 and 149 of the IPC for murdering Rameshwar.

GURGAON
Two injured: Tension prevails in Baupur village after a group clash. According to an FIR two persons had been injured seriously in the clash. Mr Bharat Singh, who sustained bullet injuries had been admitted to the Pushpanjali Hospital and Pardeep who suffered head injuries had been admitted to the General Hospital. The sadar police has registered a case against Shreepal, Harchand, Vijaykant, Kale Phire and Ravinder under the Arms Act.

Stolen trucks found: The Punhana police claims to have found two stolen trucks from the grain market. One truck had been stolen from Faridabad and the other from Kosikalan in UP. No arrest has been made so far.

HISAR
Three arrested: The Hansi police on Friday arrested three persons and found three pistols and 11 cartridges on their possession. The arrested persons have been identified as Billu Yadav of Dhana Khurd, Ramesh of Ladaut village under Sadar police station, Rohtak, and Chander Bhan of Sheikhpura village. A case under the Arms Act has been registered against them.

PANIPAT
Condemned: Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, President, Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, and Mr Bhajan Lal, MP, have condemned the attack on Mr Balbir Pal Shah, a former Transport Minister. Addressing a press conference at PWD Rest House here on Saturday Mr Hooda alleged that the law and order situation in the state had reached at an all-time low and the police had failed to do anything in this regard.

Blood donation camp: A blood donation camp was organised by the Central Arya Youth Council here on Saturday, Mr Fateh Chand Vij, former MLA, inaugurated the camp. As many as 69 persons donated blood.

School function: A prize distribution function was held at DAV Centenary Public School, here. Mr Krishan Das, Minister for Town and Country Planning, who presided over the function, announced a grant of Rs 11,000 to the school.

SONEPAT
Car recovered: A dacoity attempt was foiled following the arrest of two armed youths. The SP, Mr K. Selvraj, told mediapersons here on Sunday that the accused had been identified as Parveen, alias Nitu, and Deepak of Barwasni village in this district. A pistol, stolen Maruti car and a van were recovered from their possession.

5 held: Five persons were arrested and two truckloads of cows seized from Jagdishpur village, 25 km from here, on Saturday. The cows were reportedly being smuggled to UP. Those arrested have been identified as Kala Singh of Salimpur village (Punjab), Sukhdev of Ali Majra village (Punjab), and Shamey, Allauddin and Absar of Notorey village in Bijnore district of UP.top

BILASPUR
Mandwan bridge: The HP Minister of State for Cooperatives said that Rs 1.73 crore was being spent on the construction of Mandwan bridge in the Gehadwin area. Work on the bridge would be completed by April-end as the State Government has provided additional Rs 93 lakh from NABARD for its completion. The minister inaugurated the health sub-centre building in Malraon village in the backward area of Kot Dhar, about 70 km from here, on Friday evening. He said the bridge would link 250 villages of 12 panchayats of that backward area.

DALHOUSIE
Hydel projects: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation has formulated a plan for the development of a 10,000 MW hydro power project in the Ninth and the Tenth Five Year Plans. Mr S.K. Dodeja, General Manager, Chamera Project, said on Sunday that the corporation had developed infrastructure for the execution of five major hydel projects.

HAMIRPUR
Small savings: The Hamirpur district has collected Rs 26.73 crore under the small savings scheme. Most of the deposit came under the long-term deposit scheme, Mr Manoj Kumar, Deputy Commissioner told newspersons on Saturday. He said the target for the district for the current year was Rs 29.23 crore.

House gutted: A house was gutted here on Saturday. The house belonged to Mr Minu Ram. An adjoining house was also partially damaged. Two fire tenders controlled the fire.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the executive committee of the Nagarpalika Parishad Lease Holder Welfare Association: President — Mr S.P. Singh; Senior Vice-President — Mr S.P. Bhardwaja; Vice-President — Ms Pushpa Bakshi; and Finance Secretary — Mr Krishanlal.

Office-bearers: Mr Jeet Singh Negi has been elected President of the Sirmour District Bar Association here on Friday. Mr Negi has nominated the following office-bearers: Vice-President — Mr Devinder Singh; General Secretary — Mr Vishwa Rajchaman; Cashier — Ms Vanita Singh; and Joint Secretaries — Mr Mamit Agarwal, Mr Pradeep Singh Chauhan and Mr Kamal Jeet Sharma.

Pending cases: A backlog of 300 cases under the Prime Minister’s Rozgar Yojna, IRDP and Scheduled Caste Development scheme, pending with various nationalised banks in the district, would be cleared within a year, Mr Rakesh Makasdhal, Deputy Commissioner, said while presiding over a district-level Review Committee-cum-Consultative Committee meeting on Friday.

NURPUR
National award: Friends Sports and Social Welfare Club, a voluntary organisation at Rey in Kangra district has been selected for National Award by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, for its social welfare activities. The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, will present the award to the club on January 11 during the National Youth Week celebrations in Lucknow. According to Mr Bhushan Kumar, the coordinator of the club, this organisation under the guidance and direction of Nehru Yuva Kendra , Dharang had launched a number of social, sports and cultural programmes. The State Government had already given the best Youth Club Award to this club.

Disparity in promotions: Mr I.D. Chandel, the state Vice-President of the Assistant Engineers’ Association of the HP Irrigation-cum-Public Health Department, has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, to remove the disparity in promotion in the department. He said the Assistant Engineers, who had been promoted through the Department Promotion Committee from 1979 to 81 were stagnating whereas, Junior Engineers appointed through the State Public Service Commission from 1983 to 1986 had been promoted to the post of Executive Engineers.

SUNDERNAGAR
Grant to school: Mr I.D. Dhiman, Education Minister, was the chief guest at the prize distribution function held at Senior Secondary School, Mahadev on Saturday. Mr Dhiman sanctioned a sum of Rs 3 lakh for the construction of three rooms and a toilet in the school.top
