GURDASPUR
One arrested:
The police on Thursday arrested Dilawar Singh of Jharoli village for a case registered against him under Section 420 of the IPC, according to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP.

Case registered: The Dhariwal police has registered a case under Sections 7 and 13 of the Corruption Act against Mr Tarlochan Singh Bhatti, a former SDM, Gurdaspur, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from Ms Balbir Kaur of Sohal. The police also registered a case against Gurdeep Singh of Sohal and Palwinder Singh of Gahlari.

MALERKOTLA
Suicide: Mr Dinesh Kumar (24), a local resident, allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by consuming poison. The cause of the death is not known.

NAWANSHAHR
Protest: Non-teaching employees of the local private aided colleges, BLM Girls College, R.K. Arya College and DAV College of Education, on Wednesday held dharnas here in protest against the indifferent attitude of the government towards their demands. The employees will continue their protest till February 5.

PATIALA
Promoted: Mr V.K. Bhatia, Xen, PSEB, Sirhind, has been promoted as Superintending Engineer, Faridkot circle, according to an official release here on Wednesday.

PHAGWARA
Telephones:
The telephone services in this town are in disarray these days. Many telephones are dead. The local Citizen Right Forum on Wednesday demanded proper action in this regard.

Free eye camps: Under the country-wide campaign for checking blindness, a free eye check-up camps will be held in the District. Disclosing this here on Wednesday, Mrs Usha R. Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, said spectacles would be provided free of cost to students. The SDM, Mr Dharampal Gupta, said eye camps would be held at Phagwara from February 5 to 7 and the camp at Panshta would continue till February 6.

SANGRUR
Eye camp: The Lions Club, Moonak, organised a free eye operation camp at Moonak on Wednesday. Dr S.K. Khullar, Civil Surgeon, inaugurated the camp. As many as 75 operations were performed and 400 patients were examined.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of Janata Rehri Market, Mani Majra: president — Mr Satpal; senior vice-president — Mr Kamal Kant; vice-president — Mr Nirmal Kumar, general secretary — Mr Nyaypal Verma; and secretary — Mr Nathu Ram.

Dharna: Members of the UT Powermen Union will stage a dharna before the Electricity Operation Division 2 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. This was stated by Mr Bhag Mal Rana, general secretary of the union.

Indefinite fast: The indefinite fast by members of the Punjab State Electricity Board Employees Federation, Zirakpur Division, entered its ninth day on Thursday. According to Mr Sunil Sharma, secretary of the federation, the main demands are release of EPF statements, completion of GPF books and release of all dues to retired employees.

Blood donation camp: The NSS unit of Government College, Panchkula, organised a blood donation camp with the help of a team of Doctors of the Blood Bank of the PGI, Chandigarh, at its campus on Thursday. As many as 82 donors donated blood.

Rally held: Members of the Footpath Workers Rozgar Bachao Samiti held a rally in support of their demands near the labour roundabout in Sector 20 here on Thursday. Mr Lalit Parsad, general secretary of the samiti, said there were many discrepancies in the recent survey conducted by the administration to ascertain the number of people running their business from the roadside. He alleged the names of many persons had been wrongly listed while that of others had been left out.top

AMBALA
Stones laid: The Deputy Commissioner, Mrs Navraj Sandhu, laid foundation stones of three class rooms at Government High School and Government Primary School at Kardhan village on Tuesday. The schools have been adopted by the Lions Club, Ambala, who have also donated uniforms and shoes to poor students.

Threat: The Haryana State Science Teachers Union has threatened to launch an agitation in case its demands are not accepted by the state government before February 7. Mr Devendra Gautam, President of the association, said the Education Minister, Mr Ram Bilas Sharma, had assured them on several occasions but no action had been taken so far.

FATEHABAD
Arrested:
The police on Thursday arrested Sohan Lal at Bhattu Kalan village in this district for a case registered against him under Sections 376 and 451 of the IPC, according to Mr Rajbir Deswal, SP.

GURGAON
Two killed: Two persons were killed on the spot when a canter in which they were travelling collided with a truck on the national highway. The Sadar police has registered a case against the driver of the truck.

Freedom fighter dead: Mr Ram Sharma (68), a freedom fighter, died on Wednesday at his residence in Pataudi. A number of local residents attended the funeral.

KURUKSHETRA
Gang busted: The police has busted a gang of bicycle lifters here with the arrest of five members of the gang. The police recovered 36 bicycles from them, Mr Shrikant Jadhav, SP, said here on Wednesday.

PANIPAT
Eye camp: The Health Department and the Red Cross Society held an eye camp at Bapoli village, 17 km from here, on Tuesday. It was inaugurated by Mr A.K. Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner. A team of doctors examined the patients.

ROHTAK
Recovered: The HVPN has recovered Rs 1.75 crore from this circle during a recovery campaign of pending electricity bills, Mr H.K. Sharma, Superintending Engineer, said here on Wednesday. He said the last date to pay the pending bills had been extended to February 28.

SIRSA
Competition: A three-day state-level St John Ambulance competition organised by the St John Ambulance Association and 24 Haryana Brigade commenced here at Maharana Pratap Stadium on Wednesday. Mr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, and Mr Inder Singh, SDM, were present on the occasion.

Two killed: Two family members were killed and another was injured in an accident near Sikandarpur in the district. Jeet Singh and Amolak Singh died on the spot and Tarsem Singh was admitted to a hospital in Ludhiana.

Surprise visit: Mr Kulwant Singh Kalsan, City Magistrate, conducted a surprise raid at the local Public Health office on Wednesday and found nine employees absent from the duty. The Magistrate said a departmental action would be initiated against them.

SONEPAT
Proposed dharna: The district unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union has decided to hold an indefinite dharna from February 7 in front of the distillery at Jahri village near here in protest against the disposal of waste water in the residential as well as in the field of farmers.

YAMUNANAGAR
Five arrested: The police arrested five persons and seized a truck which was loaded with 20 baffaloes and 30 calves here on Wednesday. Mr Sheel Madhur, SP, said a case has been registered.

KANGRA
Threat: The Himachal Pradesh Medical Officers Association has threatened to launch a state-wide agitation if the government fails to pay arrears of the revised pay scales immediately to them, Dr Sushil Sharma, spokesperson of the association, said here on Thursday.

NURPUR
3 arrested: The Indora police has arrested Swaran Lal, Ramesh and Tripta Devi, husband, the brother-in-law and the sister-in-law, respectively, of Sudesh Rani of Beli Mahanta village on Tuesday for allegedly harassing her and demanding dowry. A case had been registered against them on Monday following the death of Sudesh Rani, who had reportedly consumed poison.
