FEROZEPORE
Khula darbar:
The district administration held a khula darbar at Gatti Rajoke village, near here on Saturday. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu, was present on the occasion. He said banks had been directed to grant loans to farmers. He also announced a construction of a middle school building. The village sarpanch has asked for the construction of a bridge over the Sutlej creek. The DC assured them that he would take up the matter with the state government.

GARHSHANKAR
Cultural festival:
A cultural festival, organised in memory of Shansher Singh at Daduwal Mahilpur village, concluded on Friday. Folk singers from Punjab and abroad entertained the audience. Mr Kamal Chaudhry, MP, was present on the occasion.

Tension: Tension prevails between traders and octroi officials here. The traders allege that employees of the contractor harass them. On other hand, octroi contractors blame the traders for evading tax.

JALANDHAR
Shopkeepers’ plea:
The Model Town Shopkeepers Association alleged that traffic regulators placed at the Skylark chowk by the traffic police has been affecting their business. The association will hold a dharna in front of the SSP office on February 3 in protest against this.

LUDHIANA
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the District Taxation Bar Association, Direct Taxes, Ludhiana: President — Mr Ashok Juneja; Secretary — Mr N.D Bansal; Joint Secretary — Mr Rajesh Julka; and Vice-President — Mr Anup Jain.

Nominated: Mr Surjit Singh, President, Danga Pirit Society, has been nominated as a member of Food Corporation of India, Zonal Committee (north).

PHAGWARA
Case registered:
The police has registered a case under Section 304-B of the IPC against three persons for allegedly burning Nirmala Devi (28) at Sangatpur village on Friday. The arrested include her husband, Varinder Kumar, her mother-in-law and a woman.

AMBALA
Deputation
: A deputation of the Haryana College Teachers Union met the Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, here on Saturday and urged him to approve the pension scheme for teachers of the non-government affiliated colleges in the state. The deputation also urged the Chief Minister to implement the new pay-scales as per Central Government's recommendations and also release salary for the period when teachers were on strike.

BHIWANI
Camp:
A blood donation camp was organised by the Royal Youth Club at Kirawad village on Saturday. The Public Health Minister was present on the occasion and announced a grant of Rs 50,000.

Rozgar yojna: The District Rural Development Agency has spent Rs 1.23 crore under the Jawahar Rozgar Yojna, according to Mr K.S. Yadav, Deputy Commissioner.

HISAR
Cases registered:
The police registered powertheft cases against nine persons under Section 379, IPC, and the Electricity Act on Saturday. According to police sources, cases have been registered against Sube Singh and Balbir Singh of Shahpur village, Satbir Singh, Suraj Bhan, Jaivir and Ram Sarup of Hansi and Dilbag Singh, Kailasho Devi and Anil Kumar of Housing Board colony, Hisar.

JIND
Three killed:
Three persons, including a woman and a child, were killed and two others injured in a road accident. The dead were identified as Ram Phal of Danoda village and Chandro of Latani village. The injured have been admitted to a hospital at Narwana. The police has registered a case under Sections 279, 337, 304-A and 34 of the IPC.

REWARI
Accidents:
Dhir Singh, a local resident, was killed and other occupants of a jeep were injured in a road accident on Friday. In another incident, Ram Rattan Saini (70) was crushed to death near Garhi Bolni chowk here on Friday.

SIRSA
One arrested:
Jeet Singh of Chakkan Shahidan village in this district was arrested on Friday on the charge of cheating a goldsmith.

Goods recovered: Dev Raj of the local Sanjay Colony was arrested on Saturday in a criminal case registered against him under Section 380, IPC. The police recovered stolen goods from his possession.

Escape attempt: Bhal Singh, an inmate of District Jail, was arrested while trying to escape from the jail here on Saturday. According to sources, he tried to escape when he was being taken to court. top

Grant:
Mrs Chandresh Kumari, MP, has urged the youth to fight against social evils and protect the environment from degradation. She was speaking at a function organised by the Help Line Club, Yol. She announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh from the MP development fund for the construction of a community hall at Yol.

NURPUR
Staff shortage:
Government Primary School, Chinua, in Ganhilagor gram panchayat of this subdivision has a single teacher for all five classes. Parents are sore over the apathy of the education department for not appointing adequate staff even towards the close of the academic session.

SOLAN
Price hike issue:
A meeting of the District Congress Committee was held here on Saturday. The General Secretary of the committee, Mr Arvind Gupta, in a press statement issued here said the government had played a joke with the poor people by hiking the prices of essential commodities.
