5 killed in Bihar
PATNA, Jan 31 (PTI) — Five persons, including three Home Guards, were killed and 22 injured in separate accidents in Bihar since yesterday. Three Home Guards were killed and 12 pilgrims injured when a bus carrying them overturned in Begusarai last night, the police said. In another accident, two persons were killed and 10 injured when a taxi driver lost control and plunged into a ditch near Sherrari village in Lakhisarai district today.

New Delhi, Jan 31 — Healthcare activities at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are likely to be affected tomorrow as the AIIMS Faculty Union has threatened to go on strike to press for their demand for better wages. Faculty association general secretary S. Bal said there would be complete closure of the OPD, emergency and other clinical services but doctors would attend patients already admitted to the hospital. He said despite agitations on January 11, 18 and mass casual leave by faculty members on January 25, no action has been initiated by the government for the implementation of modified Bakshi Committee recommendations on their pay scales.

Assam AAG dead
GUWAHATI, Jan 31 (PTI) — Assam's Additional Advocate General Atul Chandra Bora today died at Gauhati Medical College Hospital here following a brain haemorrhage, family sources said. He was 62 and is survived by his wife. Son of former Minister Motiram Bora, he was an expert on criminal law and had dealt with several cases related to detention under the National Security Act (NSA). Bora suffered the attack at Nagaon yesterday and was rushed to Guwahati.

3 activists held
IMPHAL, Jan 31 (PTI) — At least three activists of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), the Kanglei Yawol Kana Lup (KYKL) and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) were apprehended by the security forces from Manipur on Friday. Official sources said today the combined force of the police and the CRPF conducted search operations at Yairipok Yambem village in Manipur’s Thoubal district. During the operation, an activist of the KYKL identified as Kh. Chaoba Singh (20) was arrested.

2 Naxals killed
HYDERABAD, Jan 31 (PTI) — Two Naxalites of the banned People’s War Group (PWG) were killed in an encounter with the police at the Bommala Ramaram area in Nalgonda district early today, the police said. More than 25 armed Naxalites attacked a police station at about 2 a.m., leading to exchange of fire by the police, which continued for several hours, it said, adding that the rest of the Naxalites, however, fled the scene.

NEW DELHI, Jan 31 (PTI) — Swaralaya, an association devoted to music, has decided to confer the prestigious Swaralaya Puraskaram 1998 on sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan for his contribution to Indian music. The award, comprising Rs 1 lakh, a citation and a statuette, will be presented to Khan at a function here on February 5 by the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, Dr Najma Heptullah, a Swaralaya release said here.

BHOPAL, Jan 31 (PTI) — Ashokvir Vikram Singh was today nominated leader of the Samajwadi Party in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. His nomination to the post was announced by party president Mulayam Singh Yadav in his concluding address at the party’s fourth national convention here. The Samajwadi Party has four members in the state Assembly and they had authorised the party chief to nominate their leader in the House.

BHOPAL, Jan 31 (PTI) — The first session of the 11th Madhya Pradesh Assembly, formed after the November poll, would begin here tomorrow with Mr Sriniwas Tiwari as the pro-tem Speaker. Mr Tiwari, who has been a Speaker since December 1993, would vacate office tomorrow morning when he would be sworn in as a member of the House by Governor Bhai Mahavir.

NEW DELHI, Jan 31 — The Congress MLA from Tughlakabad, extension, Mr Sheeshpal, was detained today when he was protesting against the demolition of an unauthorised colony by the DDA. The police has detained 10 other persons who tried to stop the demolition work. A rioting case has been registered against them, the police said.
