Cultural Scene
Chekov’s adaptation of The Proposal well received
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Dec 25 — A Hindi adaptation of Anton Chekov’s one-act play the Proposal came up for a decent presentation at the Punjab Kala Bhavan, Sector 16, here today.

Sewak Nayyar’s translation ably managed to retain the true spirit of the boisterous script. The human spirit of self-assertion in addition to seeking universal approval of all personal actions figured as an important idea in the script. The stage visual is a journey into societal pyschology.

A young farmer Lomov visits his middle-aged neighbour seeking the hand of his daughter. The father leaves his daughter and the proposer to talk and arrive at a decision sitting alone. The dialouge starts with Lomov’s journey of words designed to end at a proposal. It gets struck in a dispute over possession of land. The father joins the case argument, in defence of his daughter who represented the family.

Lomov leaves the house only to be recalled by the girl after she comes to know the purpose of Lomov’s visit. Everything is finalised before another row breaks over the quality of dogs with each claiming superiority of their possesion.

The stage is a simple one which appeals to the audience at the surface level. The back had steps to lead out of the stage. The dressing was rather simple.

The comedy was well received despite remarks about possible areas of improvement in presentation .The difference in loud expression and the corresponding response could have looked better with sustainability of the tones.

The play was translated and directed by Sewak Nayyar. The artists were Sunil Chitkara as the father, Sanjeev Gupta as Lomov, who is the proposer, and Chandrika and Marrie .Back
