Bar association: The following have been
elected office-bearers of the Bar Association

Ministry of Surface Transport and CBSE-affiliated
schools here on Tuesday organised a seminar on
traffic rules and regulations at Sri Guru
Harkrishan Public School. The Mayor , Mr Subhash

Suicide: Rajinder Kaur (42), alias Raji, of
Ghanie Ke Banger allegedly committed suicide by
hanging herself on the intervening night of
December 18 and 19. A case has been registered
under Sections 396 and 34, IPC.
Inaugural
lecture: Former Union Minister Karam Singh
will deliver the inaugural Mahatma Hans Raj
memorial lecture here on Friday. It is being
organised by the local DAV institutions. This was
stated by the Principal of DAV College, Mr M.L.
Aeri, on Tuesday.
HOSHIARPUR
Suspension period extended: Mr Iqbal Singh,
District Magistrate, here has extended the
suspension period of the licence of New Raj
Theatre up to January 4 keeping in view the
report of the Executive Engineer, PWD, Provincial
Division. The licence had been suspended because
of some defects pointed out in the annual
inspection report.
Appointed: Mr
Hari Om Manocha has been appointed Secretary of
the district Congress Committee according to a
press note of the party issued here on Tuesday.
LUDHIANA
Camp: The zonal office of the State Bank of
India organised a recovery-cum-compromise camp
here on Tuesday. About 30 cases from Ludhiana and
Ferozepore with an outstanding amount of Rs 274
lakh were settled.
Award: Dr
M.S. Brar, senior soil chemist in the Department
of Soils, Punjab Agricultural University, has
been awarded the International Congress
Commemoration Award for 1998-99 by the Indian
Society of Soil Science. The award, which carries
a gold medal and a citation, has been given to Dr
Brar for his contributions in the field of
nutrient indexing of crops and delineating of
Punjab soils.
Flayed:
The Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union, Ferozepore
division, has flayed the abolition of group 'D'
and 'C' posts in the Railways and the orders of
the General Manager, Northern Railway, for
transferring 117 firemen to the Delhi division. A
meeting of the union was held here on Tuesday in
this regard.
Air service:
The state unit of the Janata Dal (United) has
sought twice-a-week air service on the
Ludhiana-Delhi route to cater to the needs of the
business community of the city. In a letter sent
to the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr
Sharad Yadav, the state secretary of the party,
Mr K.S. Budhiraja, said the service, which had
been recently suspended, should be restored.

Police action flayed: Dr Gurmit Singh Sra,
general secretary of the district unit of the
Government-Aided Privately Managed School
Teachers and Other Employees Union in a press
note here on Wednesday condemned the police
action on DIET students in Ropar during their
protest. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of
cases against the students and action against the
erring officials.
