Bar association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Bar Association here: president — Mr Sarbjit Singh; vice-president — Mr V.P. Singh Bhatia; secretary — Mr Parminder Singh Sethi; and joint secretary — Mr Dharminder Bawa.

Seminar: The Ministry of Surface Transport and CBSE-affiliated schools here on Tuesday organised a seminar on traffic rules and regulations at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School. The Mayor , Mr Subhash Kumar Sharma, presided.

BATALA
Suicide:
Rajinder Kaur (42), alias Raji, of Ghanie Ke Banger allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself on the intervening night of December 18 and 19. A case has been registered under Sections 396 and 34, IPC.

Inaugural lecture: Former Union Minister Karam Singh will deliver the inaugural Mahatma Hans Raj memorial lecture here on Friday. It is being organised by the local DAV institutions. This was stated by the Principal of DAV College, Mr M.L. Aeri, on Tuesday.

HOSHIARPUR
Suspension period extended:
Mr Iqbal Singh, District Magistrate, here has extended the suspension period of the licence of New Raj Theatre up to January 4 keeping in view the report of the Executive Engineer, PWD, Provincial Division. The licence had been suspended because of some defects pointed out in the annual inspection report.

Appointed: Mr Hari Om Manocha has been appointed Secretary of the district Congress Committee according to a press note of the party issued here on Tuesday.

LUDHIANA
Camp:
The zonal office of the State Bank of India organised a recovery-cum-compromise camp here on Tuesday. About 30 cases from Ludhiana and Ferozepore with an outstanding amount of Rs 274 lakh were settled.

Award: Dr M.S. Brar, senior soil chemist in the Department of Soils, Punjab Agricultural University, has been awarded the International Congress Commemoration Award for 1998-99 by the Indian Society of Soil Science. The award, which carries a gold medal and a citation, has been given to Dr Brar for his contributions in the field of nutrient indexing of crops and delineating of Punjab soils.

Flayed: The Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union, Ferozepore division, has flayed the abolition of group 'D' and 'C' posts in the Railways and the orders of the General Manager, Northern Railway, for transferring 117 firemen to the Delhi division. A meeting of the union was held here on Tuesday in this regard.

Air service: The state unit of the Janata Dal (United) has sought twice-a-week air service on the Ludhiana-Delhi route to cater to the needs of the business community of the city. In a letter sent to the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Sharad Yadav, the state secretary of the party, Mr K.S. Budhiraja, said the service, which had been recently suspended, should be restored.

NAWANSHAHR
Police action flayed:
Dr Gurmit Singh Sra, general secretary of the district unit of the Government-Aided Privately Managed School Teachers and Other Employees Union in a press note here on Wednesday condemned the police action on DIET students in Ropar during their protest. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of cases against the students and action against the erring officials.

Bankers' bash: Rajbhasha golden jubilee celebrations of bankers has been organised by the State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank at Tagore Theatre. Skits, mono-acting ghazals, classical dances and bhangra were presented by staff members of 17 banks and their families.The highlight of the programme was a banking geet mala presented by Canara Bank staff based on snippets from Hindi film songs. The chief guest, Mr Bhargava, GM, PNB, and executives from other banks, gave mementoes to the participants.

Cheques given:
The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Mohinder Kumar, on behalf of the Haryana Government gave away cheques for Rs 5 lakh each to the father and wife of martyr Parveen Kumar at his native village, Dhanauri, 30 km from here, on Monday.

FATEHABAD
Sammelan:
The Haryana Kisan Sabha organised a "karza mukt sammelan" at Bhuna village on Tuesday. Mr Krishan Swaroop, general secretary of the sabha presided.

Electoral rolls: The state Election Commission has decided to prepare the electoral rolls of Tohana and Jakhal Municipal Committees in the district along with 18 municipal councils / committees in the state. This was stated by Mr Anil Malik, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, here on Tuesday.

Lok Adalat:
A Lok Adalat was organised here on Tuesday in which 36 cases relating to accidents were settled. Mr Arvind Kumar Goyal, District and Sessions Judge, presided.

ROHTAK
Grief :
Mr Sultan Singh Atri, convener, state unit of the Congress teachers' cell, has expressed grief over the death of Neki Ram, father of former Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee President Birender Singh, recently.

SONEPAT
NOC granted:
The Haryana State Pollution Control Board has granted the no objection certificate to a chemical and katha factory located at Khewra village after it installed its own treatment plant for discharging effluent waste water.

Distributed: Mr Sudesh Sharma, a proprietor of Shivam Construction, distributed 300 blankets, 250 sweaters, 110 quilts, 25 sewing machines and 10 hearing-aid equipment among the poor at a function organised by the Social Welfare Forum here on Tuesday.

Two dead: Two persons were killed and another injured when a truck hit their jeep on the Sonepat-Gohana road near Kheri Damkan village, 30 km from here, on Tuesday. The victims were identified as Dhan Raj and Mohinder of Kohla village. A case has been registered.

Shot: A two-and-a-half-year-old child, Mohit, was allegedly shot by a neighbour, Rajesh, at Guhna village on Tuesday. An old enmity was stated to be the cause of the murder. A case has been registered.

Girl raped: A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by Sanjeet at Barwasni village on Tuesday. A case has been registered.

Body recovered: The police has recovered the body of a man near Sikka colony here on Tuesday. It has not been claimed so far.

Dharna:
The district unit of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh staged a dharna in front of the PWD office here on Tuesday in favour of its demands. A deputation of the trade union leaders also met Superintending Engineer R.K. Sharma in this connection.

Notification: The District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner, Mr Jagdish Chander Sharma, here on Tuesday issued a notification prohibiting the plying of medium and heavy vehicles from Gandhi chowk to Court Complex between 9.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
