Scooterist crushed to death

CHANDIGARH, Dec 22 — An unidentified scooterist was crushed to death by a speeding truck near the Sector 32-46 roundabout late this evening. Further investigations are on.

Assault alleged
Sanjay Bhardwaj, a resident of Sector 7, Panchkula, alleged that he was assaulted by Sarvsheel Maggo and his son, Aman, near the Sector 16 Shanti Kunj. He said the accused later fled in their car.

He said he had married Sarvsheel's daughter in May, but, was having strained relations with her. The accused had allegedly been threatening him all along and when they saw him alone near the park, they accosted him and after an altercation, stabbed him.

A case under Sections 307 and 34 of the IPC, has been registered at the Central police station.

Burglars caught
The police has arrested three persons who had burgled a shop in Sector 34. The accused — Daniel Masih, a resident of Ram Darbar, Vicky, a resident of Sector 7, and a Sector 47 resident, Vinay Shankar — had broken into the shop on the night of December 20 and had taken away 65 packets of cigarettes, 21 lighters and Rs 500 in cash.

They were working as office boys of some advocates practising in the district courts. More recoveries are expected.

Student attacked
The members of the the DAV College Students Union (DSU) attacked an activist of the DAV College Students Association (DSA) on the college campus late this evening.

Tejinder Singh, a student of BA III, was attacked by a group of sword and lathi wielding students led by Amanjot Singh, President of the DSU, to avenge the bashing up of Veerjot Singh, an activist of his party, some days ago by activists of the DSA.

While Tejinder has been admitted to the general hospital, a case has been registered against the attackers. His condition is reported to be stable.

The police would also arrest activists of both groups as a preventive measure, sources said.Back

 

Campus beat
Celebration week at Dev Samaj College

CHANDIGARH, Dec 22 — A four-day national celebrations week began at Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36, to mark the 149th birthday of the founder here today.

Hundreds followers could be seen sprawled all over the campus, engaged in various academic discussions and sharing personnel experiences.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Navneet Arora, an organiser and teacher at the Mechanical and Industrial Department, University of Roorkee, said the samaj differed from other sects, and laid stress on improving one’s nature and spreading happiness. The soul also faced death in case it is corruption with noral day conduct. This was contrary to the common belief that the soul was permanently alive.

Lt-Col Kuldeep Singh, who sought pre-mature retirement to work in spirit of the samaj, said that the conditions for becoming a regular member were strict. The members may be less, but only those who were genuinely interested can be made members. The main curbs for followers included abstaining from alcohol, non-vegetarianism, corruption, gambling and bigamy. A slight deviation will lead to ouster from the samaj.

A few other speakers included Ms Satinder Dhillon, Principal of Dev Samaj College of Education, Mrs Sarla Sharma, a former MLA of Punjab, and Mr Krishan Singh Chauhan among others.

The religious founder and evolutionary founder of the social movement was Dev Atma. At the age of 32, he named himself as Satya Nand Agnihotri.

Strike by homoeo students

CHANDIGARH, Dec 22 — Students of Homoe-opathic Medical College and Hospital, Sector 26, raised anti-principal slogans and a observed strike for the third consecutive day today. The indefinite strike was started by the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) unit of the college.

The students, who are seeking the removal of the college Principal, Mr K.K. Dhiman, have alleged that he forced the teachers to deliberately fail the students representatives. They pointed out that students who were scoring 60 per cent marks in the written examinations have been declared ‘fail’ in the practical examinations.

In a release issued here today, Mr Surat Negi, President of the ABVP unit of the campus has urged the secretary and management of the college to call an urgent meeting to solve the issue. The students who have formed a Sangharsh Samiti have also submitted a memorandum to the college authorities to lodge their protest against the principal.

They have also alleged that though the winter vacation was scheduled to begin from December 25, Principal, in order, to conceal facts had advanced these holidays from December 22 to January 8.

Meanwhile, the agitating students will take out a rally from the college to Sector 43 to submit a memorandum to the Mr C.L. Dhamija, Secretary to the management.

The meeting of the Homoeopathic Council, Punjab, is scheduled to be held on January 6 and 7, 2000, and the issue is likely to be taken up then, it is learnt. The Principal, Mr K.K. Dhiman, clarified that many of these students had been declared fail in the results declared by the Punjab Homoeopathic Board and Council, and as per the rules they cannot be given grace marks to pass.

Yadav outstanding chemical engineer

CHANDIGARH, Dec 22 — Prof G.P. Yadav of the University of Bombay, was decorated with the 'most outstanding chemical engineer' on the third day of the Chemcon '99 festival here today. The annual festival for chemical engineers being hosted by Panjab University is deliberating chiefly on 'cleaner and greener technologies'.

Professor Yadav holds eight international and several Indian patents. He is a holder of several Indian and foreign scholarships. A leading consultant in the field of eco-friendly technologies, he stressed on the recognition of the Vedic concept of panchtatva as the major driving force behind green technologies. He was awarded by the Hindustan Lever. He spoke on 'Atoms cascade and green engineering'.

Mr S.S.Saini, Executive Director of the Panipat refinery, discussed the oil sector in the light of rising international prices and stringent environmental laws. He gave an overview of the strategies being employed by oil companies to cope up with the dismantling of the administered price mechanism of petroleum products. The Panipat refinery has achieved the status of zero discharge company with a green belt of 500 acres.

Dr D.K.Vohra, Chairman of the Chemical Engineering Department' and Dr R.K.Wanchoo conducted the session.

Prof K. Tochigi from Nihon University, Tokyo, delivered a talk on 'Recent development on prediction of physio-chemical properties using ASOG group contribution method'.

Process modelling, optimisation, artificial intelligent applications and chemical technology were a few other important topics of deliberation for three days. Dr R.C.Katyal from the host department also helped conduct the technical sessions.

Child welfare

Developing patience, understanding, sensitivity and discriminative imagination were the central ideas in child welfare, said Prof M.M. Puri, Vice-Chancellor, while addressing the concluding function of the fourth national conference on 'Early childhood welfare' at Panjab University here today.

Dr Tehal Kohli, Chairperson of the Department of Education, said that India has 380 million children below 14 years which constituted 40 per cent of the population.

Mrs Kohli also listed the INPA activities for child welfare.

Orientation course

A two-day orientation course on 'Population and developmental issues' for teachers of education colleges from Punjab and Chandigarh concluded at Panjab University here today.

Dr Ajaib Singh, Director of the Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, said the courses should also be designed to address women, out-of-school youth, community leaders and students for creating a scientific temper and making them more rational.

Dr Poonam Dhawan, Director of the Centre for Adult Education, Jammu University, said that teachers and students should join heads to design suitable courses of population awareness.

Seminar

The fourth Panjab University Teachers Association lecture was delivered by noted author Bhisham Sahni here today on 'Literature, society and creativity' at the UBS auditorium.

Sahni stressed on the need of combining societal commitments with literary aesthetics.

Earlier, the PUTA President, Dr P.P.Arya, spoke about the association's activities. Dr Harjinder Singh invited the audience for a talk session. The seminar was conducted by Dr Kiranpreet Kaur.Back

 


First Chandigarh Marathon on Feb 6

CHANDIGARH, Dec 22 — The first Chandigarh Marathon will be organised here on February 6 next year to coincide with the sixth National Adventure Festival to be held from January 29 to February 6. The event will have races beginning from the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium.

The full marathon of 42.195 km will pass through parts of Chandigarh, Panchkula, and SAS Nagar and will touching Sukhna Lake, Leisure Valley, Sector 17 shopping centre, and other points at Panchkula and SAS Nagar.

The half marathon will be of 21 km, while the quarter marathon for men and women above the age of 16 will be of 10 km. The mini marathon for boys and girls under the age of 16 will be of 3 km.

Cash prizes of Rs 4 lakh will be given to the winners. The full marathon winner will get Rs 1 lakh which is double the prize money offered at the Delhi Rath Marathon. The second prize will be of Rs 50,000 and holders of 11th to 50th positions also will be given prizes.

The half marathon winner will get Rs 50,000 with the second prize being Rs 25,000. The quarter marathon winner will get Rs 10,000, followed by Rs 75,000 for the second prize winner. The mini marathon winner will be given Rs 5,000 and the second prize winner will take away Rs 4,500.

Such big event will be first of its kind in Chandigarh with nearly 10,000 participants expected here. The event has been approved by the Amateur Athletics Federation of India and foreign participants will also be invited to take part through the AAFI.

Today, a meeting to review the arrangements for the marathon was held at the UT Guest House.

The 20th Chandigarh Men's and Women's Handball Championship began here today at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8. In the women's section, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, defeated Chandigarh Handball Club-23, 7-6, with the halftime score being 4-2. In another match, DAVSSS-8 Club beat GMSC Club-21, 19-7, with the halftime score being 9-3.

In another match, GMS Club-21 beat GMS-19, 19-6 (halftime score — 7-3). In yet another match, SGGSSS-35 beat MCM-36, 14-11 (halftime score — 6-2). In the last match of the day, Coaching Centre-21 defeated Coaching Centre-35.

Boxing meet

The Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association will hold the 22nd Chandigarh State Junior Boxing Championship in all weight categories at Boxing Coaching Centre, Sector 23, on January 1 and 2 next year, according to Mr C.K. Jerath, Secretary of the association.

The team for the 32nd National Junior Boxing Championship to be held at Bangalore from January 11 to 16 will also be selected during this meet. Only bona fide boxers of the UT will be allowed to take part.Back
