Indians let initiative slip away ADELAIDE, Dec 10 (PTI) Indias bowlers made early inroads into Australias formidable batting before being pulverised by skipper Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, who both hit centuries in a record-breaking partnership that took the home side to 298 for five by close on the opening day of the first cricket Test here today. The Indians had a dream start to the three-Test series, having the Aussies four wickets down with only 52 runs on the board before lunch. They managed one more wicket just before close when Ponting was run out for 125 after putting on 239 runs for the fifth wicket with Waugh, who was unbeaten on 117. Steve Waugh and Ponting eclipsed the best unbroken Australian partnership of 223 against India set by Arthur Morris and Sir Donald Bradman at Melbourne in 1947-48. Sachin Tendulkar was aggressive in his captaincy at the start of the innings after losing the toss but allowed the initiative to slip away through some inexplicable bowling moves and missed chances by his fielders. The Australian skipper took full advantage of the situation to cross a few milestones of his own. With this 21st ton in his 123rd Test, he became the first batsman in the world to score a century against every Test playing nation. And, by stumps, he reached 8,000 runs in Test cricket. Ponting, fresh from his 197 against Pakistan at Perth last month, hit his sixth century in 32 Tests and fell 17 runs short of the 2,000-run mark. He began with two crashing offdrives off Srinath and then flicked him to similar effect. He then took to Ganguly with relish, square and straight driving the part-time bowler for fours. Waugh was an able, if less attacking company. He first offdrove and cut Ganguly for fours and then flicked Venkatesh Prasad first ball up in his second spell. The two took Australia to 187 at tea, having added 111 runs in the second session, 74 of them coming in the third hour, when Ponting boosted his score by 41 runs. The century stand between them came in 113 minutes off 168 balls and by the break, both batsmen had reached their fifties. Ponting had a lucky escape when on 61. The snickometer showed he had edged the ball behind while pulling an Ajit Agarkar delivery, but umpire Steve Dunne turned it down. In all, Waugh and Ponting batted 68 overs together after an impressive crowd of 15,491 was stunned into silence by the Indian medium-pacers early strikes in the first 80 minutes of play. Openers Greg Blewett and Michael Slater, who have rarely failed this summer, made 4 and 28 respectively. Then left-hander Justin Langer (11), hero of the series against Pakistan, and the classy but out of form Mark Waugh (5) also departed quickly. Srinath began the slide by finding the edge of Blewetts blade in his second over and both Sourav Ganguly and Venkatesh Prasad struck in their very first overs. Prasad won a dubious leg before decision against Langer and then claimed his second wicket when Mark Waugh flashed at a lifting delivery outside his off-stump. Ganguly had Michael Slater mistiming a drive to covers after making a typically flamboyant 28 off 47 balls with four fours and a six. India belied the general opinion and the good batting conditions by bowling to a plan. They kept the ball up and on and around the off-stump to make life difficult for the batsmen, conceding just 76 runs for four wickets by lunch. However, the afternoons proceedings reversed the run of play as Waugh and Ponting took to Ganguly and Srinath, who had switched ends. Srinath kept bowling to the leg side with an offside field and paid the price as the batsmen found the square boundaries with ease. Ponting again got a reprieve when on 90, with Australia on 217, when a diving V.V.S. Laxman saw the ball popping out of his hand when he hit the ground. By now, the Australians were coasting along. Ponting reached his century at the stroke of the final drinks break, cover driving Tendulkar for his 12th four. He had faced 161 balls in 218 minutes at the crease. Waugh ondrove Agarkar for his landmark century, having batted for 261 minutes and faced 214 balls, 12 of which he despatched to the boundary. The 200-run stand between the two came in 249 minutes from 370 balls. Tendulkar claimed the new ball as soon it was due, and Waugh greeted it by rocking back and cutting one over the slips before Ponting twice straight drove Prasad. With only three overs left for the day, Ponting was run out on a second run when Waugh had back his towards him. By close, Waugh had batted for 298 minutes and faced 251 balls, hitting 14 fours. Prasad and Kumble were the pick of the Indian bowlers and did their best to peg down the scoring. They were, however, not helped by sloppy Indian fielding, which saw quite a few shots go between the legs of fielders. Scoreboard Australia (1st innings): Blewett c M.S.K. Lee helps Korea retain crown NEW DELHI, Dec 10 (PTI) Captain Eun Young Lee scored a golden goal four minutes into extra-time to help South Korea beat a complacent India 3-2 and retain their title in the 4th Asia Cup Womens Hockey Championship here today. Lee was the architect of the Korean triumph, banging in an equaliser in the 68th minute of regulation time to take India by surprise and the match into extra-time. The Indian women paid the price for becoming over confident and complacent after taking a 2-1 lead with just two minutes left for the final hooter. After being down 0-1 in the first half, the Indians changed their pace and launched moves from the right flank. Two minutes into the second half, Suraj Lata found the mark with a reverse flick to put India back in the game (1-1). Half-back Kamala Dalal, who did an excellent job of feeding the forwards, chanced on an opportunity in the 62nd minute after a goalmouth melee and scooped the ball into the net to give India a 2-1 lead. That sparked off celebrations in the stands, with a jubilant home crowd thinking victory was assured. The mood, it seems, got to the women, who suddenly lost control of the ball. The pacy Koreans were quick to grab the opportunity and gave it back to the hosts in their own game to reaffirm their supremacy over the continent. The win also gave Atlanta Olympic Games silver medallist Korea a direct berth in the 2002 Buenos Aires World Cup. Asian Games gold medallists Korea, under tremendous pressure to prove their worth against India after losing all the encounters between the two countries this year, totally dominated the first half. They attacked from the word go, and the dangerous Hyun Jung Woo moved up from the left flank to give a long-range pass to Kim Seong Eun, who made no mistake in putting the ball in the box. Stunned by the early setback, the Indian women immediately withdrew into defensive play with just striker Pritam Rani and Jyoti Kullu going upfront. Playmaker and useful forward Suraj Lata was wasted in marking woo in the entire first half as India, despite earning four penalty corners, hardly made any worthwhile effort to score. The Koreans, in contrast, were fantastic in clearing the ball, with Woo and Mi Kyung Shin always lingering in the scoring area. The visitors earned five penalty corners in the first half and it took Sita Gussain to make a goal-line clearance in the 27th minute as they went into the breather 1-0 ahead. On changing ends, India looked a different side. Suraj Lata was brought upfront much to the relief of Pritam Rani and Kullu, who were struggling to control the ball. India earned their first penalty corner in the second half on a Pritam Rani move and after Suraj Lata took a shot in, Pritam engaged three defenders before passing to Suraj Lata, who made a reverse flick to give India the equaliser. Confident again after drawing level, the Indian women started attacking more, with captain Sita Gussain and Kamala Dalal also coming forward. Suraj Lata was substituted with Pakpi Devi and soon after, India earned a penalty corner. Pakpi seized upon a deflection from Sita Gussain after taking the shot in and passed it on to the unmarked Kamala Dalal, who scooped the ball into the net. But Indias joy was shortlived as the most of the players wasted passes and the Koreans grabbed the chance, captain Lee doing the needful in the 68th minute. Woo advanced from the left flank and reached the goal, where defender Sumrai Tete carried the ball, giving Lee the chance to equalise and take the match into extra-time. Indias story was
over much before extra-time as their strategy of playing
a defensive game backfired, and it took Korea just four
minutes to achieve victory. |
Klusener whips England PORT ELIZABETH (South Africa), Dec 10 (AFP) Lance Klusener pounded 174 as South Africa completed a remarkable recovery on the second day of the second Test against England at St Georges Park today. South Africa, sent in to bat, reached a total of 450 after they had been 146 for five when Klusener went in as the number seven batsman yesterday. Klusener hit his 174 off 221 balls with 25 fours and two sixes. He shared stands of 106 for the sixth wicket with Jonty Rhodes, 119 for the eighth wicket with Mark Boucher and 49 for the last wicket with new cap Mornantau Hayward. Shoaib included in Pak squad ISLAMABAD, Dec 10 (PTI) Pakistan cricket selectors yesterday ignored the controversy over speedster Shoaib Akhtars bowling action and included him in the 14-member squad bound for Australia for the next months triangular series also involving India. Akhtar was named in the Wasim Akram-led team which was selected after a one-day trial at the Lahores Gaddafi Stadium for which 19 probables had been called, including the players who had just returned from Down Under after a 0-3 drubbing at the hands of Australia in a Test series, according to Pakistan Cricket Board sources. Four members of the team which toured Australia had been dropped, including opener Aamir Sohail, pacer Waquar Younis and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed. The fourth player to be dropped was opener Ghulam Ali. Hard-hitting batsman Shahid Afridi, however, has been recalled while the selectors have opted for young off spinner Shoaib Malik, who did well in the recent Sharjah series. The team would undergo a brief training session from December 15 at the Gaddafi Stadium under the supervision of the just appointed manager Muddassar Nazar and would leave for Australia on December 29, the PCB sources said. The team: Wasim Akram (capt), Moin Khan (vice-capt), Saeed Anwer, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Wajahatullah Wasti, Shahid Afridi, Ejaz Ahmed, Yousuf Youhana, Azhar Mahmood, Abdur Razzaq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Wasim and Shoaib Malik. Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council has informed the Pakistan Board about receipt of a report on the suspect bowling action of Shoaib Akhtar. In a letter to PCB Chairman Zafar Altaf, ICC Operations Manager C.D. Hitchkok has drawn the PCBs attention to the concern expressed by New Zealands John Reid, match referee in the Australia-Pakistan Test series, over Shoaibs bowling action, The News reported. The report apparently includes comments from Australian umpires Darrell Hair and Peter Wiley, as the letter said: Not every delivery is affected but all the three officials were concerned about the straightening of Shoaibs arm immediately before a bouncer or an extra-fast delivery was bowled, The News said. Hitchkok also confirmed that ICC had received video footage of the deliveries in question and said it would soon send a copy of the footage to PCB. The letter also informed the Pakistani Board that the video tape and other relevant material had been sent to the ICCs advisory panel on illegal deliveries. The panel would meet as soon as possible and the date of the meeting would be communicated to PCB, the letter said. A controversy over Akhtars suspect bowling action erupted at the end of the third Test at Perth last month when Australian media claimed that a complaint over the same had been sent to the ICC with supporting video footage. Pakistani officials, including tour manager Yawar Saeed, had dismissed the report in the Australian media, claiming neither Reid nor the umpires had mentioned anything on the matter to them. The match referee and umpires met me after the match and they did not say a word about any controversy, Saeed had been quoted as saying. Coincidentally, former Pakistani captain Imran Khan is on the six-member panel on illegal deliveries which also includes Hitchkok, Michael Holding of the West Indies, John Reid, Robert Simpson of Australia and Nigel Pleuss of Zimbabwe. However, as per the
rules, when a bowlers action is being scrutinised
by the panel, the representative of that country is not
allowed to participate. |
Bagan labour to 1-0 win LUDHIANA, Dec 10 Striker Abdul Khalique once again proved to be the saviour as IFA Shield winners Mohun Bagan laboured to a 1-0 victory over debutants Border Security Force, Jalandhar, in the fourth National Football League at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. Just when the match seemed to be drifting towards a draw, coach Subrata Bhattacharyas strategy to bring in Nigerian Stephan Abarowei in place of midfielder Basudeb Mondal paid dividends. Stephan set up a move for substitute Kasif Jamal and with the BSF defenders falling back, the ball came to Khalique who rolled it into the net with BSF goalkeeper Bibhas Saha in a helpless position. The victory not only ensured three points for Calcuttas glamour outfit but also boosted the confidence of the green and maroon brigade, struggling to find form after a string of upsets in the Durand Cup and the Super Cup against Goas Salgaocar FC. The match, on the whole, was bereft of excitement with both sides mixing caution with aggression. BSF, who were promoted to the national league after finishing runners-up the second division, showed promise in patches. Forwards Gurjit Atwal and D.S. Negi initiated some fine moves but failed to score. The defence, ably manned by Mobi Singh, Raghbir Singh, Pradip Gorai and Souvik Ganguly, also performed creditably by keeping the attacks in check while goalkeeper Bibhas Sahas performance under the bar was also satisfactory except for the lapse late in the second half. Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, were handicapped by the absence of key players. Striker Chima Okerie is out of action following his suspension by the IFA while defender Samuel Omollo is nursing an injury. Regular goalkeeper Hemanta Dora was also on the bench. The return of midfielder Basudeb Mondal and Dipendu Biswas also failed to lift Bagans game. Finally the task of garnering full points was left to Khalique and Stephan, who, as in the IFA Shield final, displayed fine understanding. The first serious move by Mohun Bagan came in the 16th minute when midfielder James Singh sent a lob from the left corner but Dipendu Biswas missed the flight of the ball. Again James attempted a long ranger but the ball sailed over. BSF also got some chances but the best attempt came in the 35th minute when Prashanto Das aimed a powerful kick from 30 yards which Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Sandip Nandy just about managed to parry over the bar at the cost of a flag kick. Mohun Bagan could have taken the lead a few minutes later when Khalique found himself unmarked inside the box but stopper back Pradip Gorai effected a timely save. Another attempt by Basudeb Mondal also went waste as the ball missed the target by inches. Midway through the second half, BSF missed a gilt-edged chance when Prashanto Dass attempt saw the goalkeeper fumbling. Promising forward Gurjit Atwal was well positioned but his kick was well saved by Debjit Ghosh with the goalkeeper having moved out of charge. Stephans inclusion
late in the second half made all the difference as the
Nigerian, fresh from his stint in Belgium, made the
attacks more purposeful. With hardly three minutes to go
for the long whistle, Stephan gained control and sent a
chip for Kasi F. Kasif moved in with speed and the ball
after striking a rival defender, came to Khalique, who
easily rolled it into the net, much to the relief of the
Mohun Bagan camp. |
Paes sets up title clash with Barry JAIPUR, Dec 10 (UNI) Rapidly gaining his rhythm, Indias ace Leander Paes displayed superb performance to outclass Asias number one Srichaphan Paradorn of Thailand in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and set a title clash with Cowan Barry of Britain in the Bikaji Rajasthan Golden Jubilee ATP Tour Challenger Tennis Championship at the Jai Club courts here today. Paes took only 77 minutes in disposing of Paradorn breaking him in fourth and ninth games in the first set and then in the very first game in the next set. Barry the eighth seed proved his clear superiority over countrymate Delagado Jamie the fourth seed and the finalist of the Lucknow Challenger beating him in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. The second seed pair of Anzari Tomas (Cze) and Iwabuchi Satoshi (Japan) made short work of Indian duo Prahlad Srinath and Syed Fazaluddin beating them 6-4, 6-4 to to enter the final. Paes, who appeared in a fine shape right from the word go, sent down as many as half-a-dozen aces in the match as compared to only one by his rival. Indias number one, who is now on 166 ATP ranking, was more accurate in his serve and volley game as he committed only two double faults as compared to four by Paradorn, who is now ranked with 100 the best in Asia today. Returning rapidly to his own element, Paes, who committed as many as 61 unforced errors against Ketola Tuomas in the quarter final yesterday, committed 16 such errors today. On the contrary, Paradorn was guilty 21 times. The two almost matched each other in sending down the winners as Paes accounted 22 while his rival returned with 21. Leander Paes earned much applause today with his brilliant movements on the court. His diving backhand return and a forehand return from a difficult angle were a treat to watch. Twenty-six-year-old Paes said after the match that he found the desired rhythm today. It had been a dream run for him for the last two weeks. I played well and my serve and volley game was good today. He added that he had watched Paradorn playing against Indias Vishal Uppal and had found him a tough guy physically and mentally. Accordingly, he had set his game plan, which worked successfully as the Thai lad kept committing mistakes. The other semifinal saw taller Cowan adjust his strokes quickly on uneven bounce as compared to Delgado and that made all the difference between the two. Cowan impressively broke Delgado in the first and 11th games en route to his victory in the first set. Cowan, ranked 309, then broke him in the seventh game to win the second set and the match. Mid-way through this set, Delgado appeared to have lost any hope of a comeback in the match. The results: Singles (semi finals): Cowan Barry (GBR) b Delgado Jamie (BGR) 7-5, 6-4, Leander Paes (Ind) b S Richaphan Paradorn (Tha) 6-4, 6-4. Doubles (semi-final):
Anzari Tomas (Cze)/Iwabuchi Satoshi (Jpn) b Prahlad
Srinath (Ind)/Syed Fazaluddin (Ind) 6-4, 6-4. |

Chopra hits 132 n.o. GUWAHATI, Dec 10 (PTI) All rounder Nikhil Chopra struck a career-best unbeaten 132 to help North Zone pile up a huge first innings total of 543 on the second day of the Duleep Trophy semi-final tie against Central Zone at the Maligaon Railway Stadium here. Resuming at the overnight score of 302 for five, North lost a few early wickets but a record 145-run ninth wicket stand between Chopra and Shakti Singh (50) helped the side to consolidate the position on a good batting track. Chopra took upon himself the responsibility of rebuilding the innings after Rajiv Nair (13), Dinesh Mongia (22) and Navdip Singh (11) perished in quick succession raising hopes of a spirited fightback by Central Zone. Rajiv Nair returned to the pavilion without adding to his overnight score of 13 while Mongia was trapped by Sanjay Bangar lbw to leave North at 356 for seven at that stage. Navdip Singh who joined Chopra at the crease was also dismissed cheaply with Bangar providing the breakthrough but Centrals hope of restricting North was shattered by the invaluable ninth-wicket partnership. Chopra and Shakti Singh unleashed some delightful strokes during their record partnership to pile up the misery on their opponents. The earlier ninth wicket record of 127 was held by B. Arun and W.V. Raman of South Zone at Kanpur in 1987-88 against North Zone. Chopra, who remained at
the crease for 297 minutes and faced 232 balls, scored
his unbeaten career best with the help of 12 fours and
five sixes. |
Jyoti, Amritinder at 11th place SHENZHEN (China), Dec 10 (UNI) Jyoti Randhawa made a comeback with a superb round of five under 67 to move upto a joint 11th place along with Amritinder Singh midway through the $ 500,000 season-ending Omega PGA Golf Championship here today. Six other Indian golfers made the cut which was applied at 145 while four failed to do so. Randhawa had 140 as did Amritinder, who after a four under 68 yesterday, was placed in the third spot. Amritinders form today was only good enough to get him a par round. Jeev Milkha Singh was a stroke behind them with 141 after a good round of 67 today and was sharing the 21st position. Arjun Singh who had a fine 69 on the opening day played two over in the second and was 47th. Vivek Bhandari, Arjun Atwal and Amandeep Johl, all with 145, were bunched together in the 63rd position having just managed to make the cut. Bhandari had a neat round of 69, the other two played 72s. Van Rensburg, the joint first-round leader with Casas, carded a 68, while Meeks returned a 65. American Fran Quinn, helped by a hole in one, and Koreas Anthony Kang finished the day a stroke further back after coming in with 67s. Casas, who tied for
fourth two weeks ago just over the border in the Perrier
Hong Kong open, made a brilliant eagle on the 16th to
take control of the tournament. The Filipinos tee
shot just stopped short of going in water but he nailed
his five iron second shot from 211 yards to three feet. |

Fluent victory for Indian Airlines NABHA (Patiala), Dec 10 (FOSR) Star-Studded Indian Airlines had an easy outing against Thapar Academy, Sansarpur, blanking them 4-0, while Central Railway, Mumbai, out-stroked SAIL 6-4, Delhi, on day six of the 24th Liberal Hockey Tournament at the Ripudaman College grounds here today. The flamboyance of Indian Airlines was much in evidence and it was their experience and expertise which enabled them to ride roughshod over the Sansarpur boys. Having four Olympians and a couple of other internationals, it was natural that they post a fluent win. For the airlines team, it was former India captain Mohammad Riaz who controlled the midfield excellently and he was the fulcrum around which his team rotated their moves. Brojen Singh was the livewire in the airlines attack even as he stunned the scores of spectators with a brilliant solo run down the middle before sounding the board. Minutes later Brojen passed the ball to an unmarked Vimal who took no time to scoop the ball into the net. In the second session Virender Singh made it 3-0 for the Indian Airlines after he beautifully weaved his way past a horde of defenders to tap the ball home through the rival custodian pads. A stinging shot from the top of the circle taken by right in Ravinder Singh ended the Sansarpur teams misery as Indian Airlines posted a fluent 4.0 win.
