LUDHIANA
Sangat darshan:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Goel, presided over the weekly sangat darshan programme held here on Thursday. Mr Goel deputed the XEN to look into a complaint made by residents of Chaunta village about the roof of the village school collapsing. He also asked the SDM (East) to conduct an inquiry into forcible acquisition of a piece of land by an ASI at Pahir village and asked him to give the report within a week. As many as 100 complaints were received during the sangat darshan.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Association for Democratic Rights: president — Prof A.K. Maleri; vice-president — Dr H.S. Sandhu; secretary — Dr H.S. Grewal; finance secretary — Ms Manjit Kaur; and joint secretary — Dr Hardip Singh.

Kala Sampark:
Kala Sampark, a local institution devoted to the preservation and promotion of art, literature and culture, on Wednesday organised a face-to-face with renowned Punjabi playwright Gursharan Singh at Government High School, Kariha, about 6 km from here.

Rotary Club:
The following have been elected office-bearers of Rotary Club here: president — Mr Ranjit Khosla; secretary — Mr Davinder Singh Chandok; and treasurer — Mr H.S. Arora.

Honoured: Principal S.S. Kareer, a well-known musician and former Principal of Government College, Sidhsar, Ludhiana, has been honoured with a fellowship for his valuable contribution in the field of classical music with special reference to Gurmat sangeet.

Award: Dr Manjeet Singh, member of the Pharmacy Council of India and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Science and Drug Research, Punjabi University, Patiala, has been selected for an award by the Indian Pharmacological Society for his outstanding research work in pharmacology. He will deliver an oration entitled "Novel pharmacological target sites in cardiovascular research".

Blood donated: More than 100 students and staff members of Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management, Sector 42, donated blood at a blood donation camp here on Friday. Each donor was presented a memento by Mr Satish Chandra, Managing Director, CITCO.

Cyclist hurt:
Yusuf, a resident of Mani Majra, in a complaint registered at the Sector 5 police station, said the driver of a scooter (CH-01-Z-4544) hit his bicycle at the road dividing Sectors 6 and 7. While he was injured, the scooterist drove away from the scene. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered.

FARIDABAD
ASI arrested:
Abdul Subhan Khan, ASI, was arrested on Wednesday on a charge of accepting bribe. He was produced before a Palwal court and remanded in judicial custody. Reports said the ASI had demanded Rs 60,000 from Hasan Mohammed and promised to give him bail in a cow slaughter case. A trap was laid by the SDM and the DSP who arrested the ASI and a middleman, Shamsu, through whom the payment was made.

Old age pension: The district administration has undertaken a survey to identify new beneficiaries for providing them old age pension. The survey will be completed by December 24. An official spokesman said here on Thursday 11 screening committees had been set up in the villages and 10 in the municipal corporation area.

REWARI
Allocated:
A sum of Rs 57 lakh has been allocated for development work in Rewari district, according to the Deputy Commissioner, Mrs Sumitra Mishra Singh. She said out of this a sum of Rs 14.25 lakh would be spent on development work in urban areas while the remaining Rs 42.75 lakh was meant for rural areas of the district.

ROHTAK
‘Kanyadaan’:
The district administration has given Rs 61,000 as "kanyadaan" on the occasion of the marriage of daughters of as many as 12 families living below the poverty line under a special scheme. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Rajesh Khullar, said Rs 5,10,000 had been allocated for the current financial year to benefit the targeted number of 100 poor families of the district.

KANGRA
Rape attempt:
A 21-year-old girl of Palampur subdivision on Thursday lodged a report regarding attempt to rape by two youths of Tethail village on Wednesday night in the local police station. According to the report lodged by the girl, she was forcibly taken by the two youths to a house where they attempted to rape her. She said she slipped from their clutches and spent the night in a private bus. She then rushed to Bajreshwari Temple here to seek justice. The temple management then informed the Kangra police.

SHIMLA
NSS camp:
As many as 103 volunteers at the 10-day NSS camp in St Bede's College here have pledged to bring cheer into the lives of senior citizens. The camp concluded here on Wednesday. The Principal, Dr Melba, urged the volunteers to help and serve the poor and downtrodden.
