CPM leader shot
DARBHANGA ( Bihar), Dec 4 (UNI) — Senior CPM leader and former village headman Kumar Kalyan Jha was shot by armed criminals at Shivram village in Darbhanga district today. The DIG, Mr Rakesh Kumar Singh, said here the leader was shot near his house.

15 killed in Lanka
COLOMBO, Dec 4 (PTI) — Nine security personnel and six LTTE rebels were killed in encounters between troops and Tamil Tiger guerrillas as miscreants exploded a crude bomb to open a teller machine outside a bank in Colombo today.

NEW DELHI, Dec 4 (UNI) — President K.R. Narayanan has appointed Mr Arvind Dave, Governor of Arunchal Pradesh, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Assam, in addition to his own duties, during the absence of Lt-Gen (retd) S.K. Sinha.

NEW DELHI, Dec 4 (PTI) — The condition of former President Shankar Dayal Sharma remained "unchanged" today and he continued to be on the support of ventilator, Mr Sharma's private secretary J.N. Kashyap said.

Quake in Turkey
ISTANBUL, Dec 4 (DPA) — An earthquake in north-east Turkey left one person dead and sent people fleeing from their homes in panic, the NTV Television station reported today. The quake, which occurred on Friday evening, registered 5.5 on the Richter scale, its epicentre was near Horasan, east of the city of Erzurum. The quake was felt as far away as Kars, Prize and Trabazon.

16 die in mishap
SIKAR ( Rajasthan), Dec 4 (UNI) — Sixteen persons were killed and 18 injured in a collision between an overloaded jeep and a truck near the district headquarters town of Sikar today. The victims were travelling in the jeep, the police said. The accident occurred near Babaji-ka Nada, 25 km from Sikar, when the overloaded jeep moving towards Nawalgarh crashed into the truck coming from the opposite direction.

SDM, cops hurt
JABALPUR, Dec 4 (PTI) — A sub-divisional Magistrate and six policemen, including two inspectors, were injured as a mob, infuriated over undeclared power cut, ransacked the divisional electricity office and distribution centre at Katni, near here, yesterday, delayed reports said. The police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the mob that set ablaze three vehicles parked in the office compound, office furniture and records.

Phoolan Devi case
KANPUR, Dec 4 (UNI) — A lower court here has given permission for withdrawal of a case against dacoit Phoolan Devi registered 19 years ago after an encounter with the police. After this withdrawal, the number of cases against her has come down to 56. A special court ( dacoity) of Orai, after hearing the case, endorsed an order of the government through which the case against Phoolan Devi, MP, had been withdrawn.

Exchange set ablaze
KARIMNAGAR, Dec 4 (UNI)— Suspected Naxalites of the People's War Group (PWG) set fire to the telephone exchange at Kamalapur in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh around midnight yesterday in an apparent retaliation to the "Koyyur Encounter" in which three top PWG militants were killed on December 2. The police said here today that four to five armed Naxalites attacked the exchange at the Mandal headquarters town and set fire to the machines and furniture.

20 houses gutted
SHIMLA, Dec 4 (PTI) — A devastating fire broke out last night destroying 20 houses and property worth Rs 1 crore at Gumma village in Rohroo subdivision of Shimla district, about 100 km from here, official sources said today. The cause of the fire could not be known, they said, adding no one was injured.

Doctors’ strike
MUMBAI, Dec 4 (UNI) — The Maharashtra Government today decided to terminate the services of 476 unregistered resident doctors and take disciplinary action against registered doctors, whose strike for increased wages entered the 13th day today. Health Minister Digvijay Khalvilkar said the government had yesterday announced a 50 per cent increase in wages from Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 which would cause a burden of Rs 6 crore on the state government as well as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
