Cultural Scene
Exhibition of collages opens
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 30 — Raja Jaikrishan's exhibition of collages, titled 'Exiles' World', opened today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Panjab University. His 25 sets of works present what he terms "an upside-down world of exile".

The angst and the anxieties of this artist, who hails from Kashmir valley, are quite perceptible in the splashed images of various collages, most of which have been done in drab hues of greys and blacks. But the viewer suddenly seems to be thrown amidst colours, after a series of collages in ashen shades, may be a deliberate attempt by the artist to both startle and disquiet.

Some works of Raja present unnerving collages, like the one titled 'The Baby Does Not Cry Anymore', which uses perturbing images of half-dead children amidst shadows and bright colours. A series of three collages in a row — 'Night in the Valley', Sunset in the Valley' and 'Waiting for Dawn' present an absorbingly poignant view of a man's love for his lost land.

Interestingly, Raja has not titled all his works. In 1997 Raja had presented his first exhibition in acrylic and ink, besides collages.

The exhibition will be open till December 4.Back
