Noble gesture: The parents of Lt Saurab
Kalia in a rare gesture presented a water cooler
for the inmates of Lal Hospital here. Meanwhile,
the Amritsar Working Journalists Association have
decided to install Saurab's statue at a suitable

Medical camp: A free medical-cum-dental
camp was organised here on Sunday at Kaushalya
Devi Sanan Eye Hospital by the Batala Junior
Chamber to commemorate Independence Day. The camp
was organised in the memory of Kunan Lal
Aggarwal.

Bribery case: The CBI arrested the
driver working at the local passport office,
Gurdeep Singh, on Friday while accepting a bribe
of Rs 10,000 from Mr Kulwinder Singh, who had
applied for the renewal of his passport.

Birth control programme: The local
chapter of the People for Animals has launched an
animal birth control programme for stray dogs.
This programmes has been recommended by the
Animal Welfare Board of India.
Arrested:
The police has arrested Malkit Singh,
Karamjit Singh, alias Kala, and Harpreet Singh
and recovered large quantities of timber and
machinery from their possession. The three, along
with Jagpal Singh, had stolen a truck containing
timber in December,1998, from Harnampura village.

Teachers union: Members of the
Punjab Chandigarh College Teachers Union have
decided to hold rallies and dharnas on August 30
to protest against the false promises made by the
state government. A decision to this affect was
taken on Sunday by the President of the union, Mr
S.S. Hundal.

Blood donation camp: The Lions Club
(Nawanshahr Doaba) and the local Blood Donors'
Council organised a blood donation camp here on
Sunday at the Blood Donors Complex to mark
Independence Day. Mr Ravi Manuja, regional
chairman of the club, inaugurated the camp.
Anniversary:
Devotees of Dera Sacha Sauda (Sirsa) organised a
function here at Nayyar Virar on Sunday on the
birthday of Maharaj Sant Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh.
Kirtan and "nam charcha" were performed
on the occasion.

Banned: The District
Magistrate-cum-Election Officer, Mr Jasbir Singh
Bir, on Saturday banned the publication and
distribution of pamphlets, leaflets, tabloids and
posters which do not carry the print line of the
publisher and the printer's name and address. He
said any individual or agency found violating the
ban would be punished under Section 127-A of the
People's Representation Act,1951.
Book
released: A book in Hindi, Vatika,
written by Mr Manohar Lal Pawar, an upper
divisional clerk of the PSEB, was released by Mr
K.L. Likhi, Inspector-General of Police,
Commandos, Punjab, at the Commando Complex,
Bahadurgarh, here on Saturday.
