Noble gesture:
The parents of Lt Saurab Kalia in a rare gesture presented a water cooler for the inmates of Lal Hospital here. Meanwhile, the Amritsar Working Journalists Association have decided to install Saurab's statue at a suitable place in the city.

BATALA
Medical camp:
A free medical-cum-dental camp was organised here on Sunday at Kaushalya Devi Sanan Eye Hospital by the Batala Junior Chamber to commemorate Independence Day. The camp was organised in the memory of Kunan Lal Aggarwal.

JALANDHAR
Bribery case:
The CBI arrested the driver working at the local passport office, Gurdeep Singh, on Friday while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from Mr Kulwinder Singh, who had applied for the renewal of his passport.

LUDHIANA
Birth control programme:
The local chapter of the People for Animals has launched an animal birth control programme for stray dogs. This programmes has been recommended by the Animal Welfare Board of India.

Arrested: The police has arrested Malkit Singh, Karamjit Singh, alias Kala, and Harpreet Singh and recovered large quantities of timber and machinery from their possession. The three, along with Jagpal Singh, had stolen a truck containing timber in December,1998, from Harnampura village.

MOGA
Teachers’ union:
Members of the Punjab Chandigarh College Teachers Union have decided to hold rallies and dharnas on August 30 to protest against the false promises made by the state government. A decision to this affect was taken on Sunday by the President of the union, Mr S.S. Hundal.

NAWANSHAHR
Blood donation camp:
The Lions Club (Nawanshahr Doaba) and the local Blood Donors' Council organised a blood donation camp here on Sunday at the Blood Donors Complex to mark Independence Day. Mr Ravi Manuja, regional chairman of the club, inaugurated the camp.

Anniversary: Devotees of Dera Sacha Sauda (Sirsa) organised a function here at Nayyar Virar on Sunday on the birthday of Maharaj Sant Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh. Kirtan and "nam charcha" were performed on the occasion.

PATIALA
Banned:
The District Magistrate-cum-Election Officer, Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, on Saturday banned the publication and distribution of pamphlets, leaflets, tabloids and posters which do not carry the print line of the publisher and the printer's name and address. He said any individual or agency found violating the ban would be punished under Section 127-A of the People's Representation Act,1951.

Book released: A book in Hindi, Vatika, written by Mr Manohar Lal Pawar, an upper divisional clerk of the PSEB, was released by Mr K.L. Likhi, Inspector-General of Police, Commandos, Punjab, at the Commando Complex, Bahadurgarh, here on Saturday.top

Contest: The Society for Development of Films and Arts announced on Sunday a talent search contest for artists from Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The contest will be held to search talent in acting, dance, music and other elements of theatre.

Celebrated: The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Sector 12, celebrated Independence Day on Sunday. Prof B.K. Sharma, Director, PGI, unfurled the national flag.

Coaching: The Chandigarh chapter of the Sikh Missionary College is organising free coaching classes in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and English for students of classes X and XII. Admission forms can be had from the Sector 34 Gurdwara.

Awarded: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, awarded some of its employees with commendation certificates and cash awards of Rs 500 on Sunday.

Saplings:
Forty saplings were planted by 40 cadets of II Haryana Battalion of NCC, Ambala Cantonment, on the premises of Government Middle School in Tagra Hakimpur village near here on Saturday.

PANCHKULA
Cultural programme:
Students of Doon Public School, Sector 21, celebrated Independence Day on Saturday by organising a cultural programme dedicated to Kargil martyrs. Later the children visited injured soldiers at Chandi mandir Command Hospital.

Election office: The BSP opened its election office in Rally village in Sector 12 on Saturday. Mr Aman Kumar Nagra, BSP-HVP candidate for the Ambala Lok Sabha seat, was present on the occasion.

Telephone:
The telephone at the Shivalik Kshetriya Gramin Bank, Bakarpur, under the Manauli exchange, has not been functioning for the past one month. This rural branch is having considerable difficulty in connecting other branches, said the senior manager of the bank in a press release on Saturday.

PANIPAT
Booked:
Samalkha police has booked three persons of Chulkana village for allegedly beating and threatening employees of Water Services Department who were on patrolling duty to check the theft of canal water. A case under Section 332, 353, 506, 403 and 379 , IPC, has been registered.

SIRSA
1 arrested:
Dabwali police has arrested Sukhwinder Singh, who was wanted in a theft case under Sections 379, IPC. According to information, Sukhwinder Singh along with Atma Singh and Mohan Lal broke into the shop of Chaman Lal Bansal and decamped with 50 racks of fertilisers along with a tractor-trailer in February, 1991.

SONEPAT
Robbery attempt:
Mr Vikram Rathi, son of former Haryana minister, Mrs Shanti Rathi, foiled an attempt by a group of robbers to snatch his car by firing shots in the air in Sector 14 here on Saturday. He was returning after meeting a lawyer.

Illicit liquor: The Rai police arrested Man Singh and seized 50 bottles of country-made liquor from him following a raid conducted at Aterna village, 25 km from here, on Saturday. A case under the Excise Act has been registered.

Water supply: The water supply to the city remained suspended for the third day on Sunday. According to official sources, the non-repairing of the electric motor was the main cause of disruption in the water supply. Moreover, the main pipeline had burst on Friday.

Murder case: The city police has arrested Bhagwan of Baroda village and Joginder of Khanda village in connection with the murder of Jai Dev of Gohana. According to the police, a motor cycle and the weapons used in the crime were recovered from them.top

CHAMBA
Timber seized:
Timber worth Rs 3 lakh has been seized in the Himgiri area of Salooni tehsil in Chamba district. A special drive was launched by the Forest Department this week. Six persons have been arrested in this connection. This was stated by Mr Y. P. Gupta, Divisional Forest Officer, Salooni, here on Sunday.

HAMIRPUR
March:
About 200 students of the local regional engineering college on Saturday took out a march from the college campus to protest against the Pakistani government and the ISI. They also burnt an effigy of the Pakistani Premier, Nawaz Sharif.

NURPUR
AIDS victim:
A person of a nearby village suffering from AIDS died on Friday. According to information, the patient had undergone a clinical test in June which declared him HIV positive.

SHIMLA
Hailed:
The All-India Anti-Reservation Confederation of Employees and Students has hailed the ruling of the Supreme Court for considering only merit as the criteria for super-specialities in medical and engineering courses.
