HOSHIARPUR
One held:
The police has arrested Ashok Kumar, a resident of Reru village in Jalandhar district and recovered a pistol along with cartridge from him. Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP Hoshiarpur, said Ashok Kumar was involved in looting a liquor shop at Phalahi PS Mehtiana village and an STD booth at Model Town here.

Chowkidar union: About 300 village chowkidars of Dasuya tehsil of the district have not received their salaries for August and September 1998. This was stated in a representation to the Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, by Mr Karam Chand Saini, general secretary of the Punjab Chowkidara Union here on Wednesday.

JALANDHAR
Zonal conference:
Over 272 doctors participated in the zonal conference of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) held here recently. The conference was inaugurated by Dr C.P. Bansal, Civil Surgeon. Eminent personalities from the medical colleges at Amritsar, Patiala, Chandigarh and Ludhiana discussed the latest trends in the management of obstetrics emergencies. Dr Kamal Gupta, President, FOGSI, said Pakistani delegates could not attend the conference because of visa problems.

KAPURTHALA
Drinking water:
In order to supply clean drinking water to the residents of Sheikhpur and Mansoorwal villages, the local municipal council has installed five hand pumps in villages. Mr Ashok Kumar Aggarwal, president of the Municipal Council, said here on Thursday that the council had formulated a plan to install tubewells in the two villages to ensure the supply of drinking water.

NANGAL
Demand:
The Class III BBMB power employee unions of 20 units, passed a resolution at a meeting on Wednesday demanding wheat advance from the management. The wheat advance which was earlier, given to Class III and IV employees every year by the board is being given only to Class IV employees, this year. Mr Vivek Shel Sharma, general secretary of the Bhakra Power Employee Union, said the union had jointly appealed to the Chairman of the BBMB to restore the wheat advance facility to Class III employees.

PATIALA
Camp:
The local Bright Star Club, Kartar Park Colony, will organise a free Homoeopathic camp at Shitla Mata temple near Sanouri Adda on Saturday. Medicines will be given to needy patients free of cost.

Tree plantation: The State Bank of Patiala organised a tree plantation camp at Rajbaha Road here under the guidance of Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, here on Thursday.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Shri Brahmin Sabha here: president — Mr Devi Dass Sharma; vice-presidents — Mr Ishwar Dutt Sharma, Mr Om Parkash Sharma and Mr Harinder Sharma; general secretary — Mr Surinder Kumar Sharma; and cashier — Mr Sohan Lal Sharma.

ROPAR
Launched:
The district credit plan for the current financial year, which will benefit more than 1.80 lakh persons under priority sector lending, was launched by Mr Jagwant Singh Brar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), at mini secretariat here. The total plan outlay of this year is Rs 219.39 crore which is 44.28 per cent higher than the previous year’s plan. Out of this an amount of Rs 304.38 crore has been earmarked for lending under the priority sector, which is 45.70 per cent higher than the last year’s plan.

SANGRUR
BJP's dharna:
BJP workers from various parts of the district, led by the party district unit president, Mr Nanak Chand Kalra, and the General Secretary, Mr Jagdish Rai, staged a dharna on Friday and held a rally outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner. They urged the President to invite Mr Vajpayee again to form the government as the BJP had the support of 270 members.

Free stationery: As many as 800 needy and deserving students of different schools in the district will be given free stationery at a function to be organised by the local unit of the Bharat Vikas Parishad in Sector 7 here on Saturday. The Haryana Education Minister, Mr Ram Bilas Sharma, will be the chief guest.

Blood donors: As many as 67 employees participated in a blood donation camp organised on the premises of Fujitsu India Telecom here on Thursday. Mr Hardev Singh, General Manager, PUDA, honoured the blood donors with mementos. The others who spoke on the occasion included Mr K.M.S. Nambiar and Mr Gurmukh Singh of the Baba Sheikh Farid Blood Donors Council, Chandigarh.

Fire: A fire broke out in a baker's shop-cum-flat in the Phase I, Industrial Area, here in the early hours of Friday, damaging property. Two fire engines brought the flames under control after about an hour. The cause of the fire was believed to be a short-circuit, according to Mr B.S.Sidhu, ADFO.top

AMBALA
Accident:
An unidentified person was run over by a vehicle near motor market in city on Wednesday. A case has been registered in this connection.

BHIWANI
Car recovered:
Mr S.S. Deswal, SSP, told reporters here on Thursday that the police arrested Krishan Kumar and recovered a stolen car from him. The car had been stolen from a local restaurant.

FARIDADBAD
Shop looted:
Armed men looted a jewellery shop at Saran on Wednesday. The miscreants locked sons and employees of the shop in a room and escaped with gold and silver ornaments. They also tried to open the safe but failed. In another incident, the police seized 10 gold biscuits of foreign origin and 43 kg of silver from two persons who were on their way to Bharatpur from Delhi in a bus.

HISAR
Elected:
Dr B.L.Jalali, Director of Research , CCS Haryana Agriculture University, has been elected President of the Indian Phytopathological Society. The society is the second largest body of plant pathologists in the world.

Arrested: The Uklana police arrested Baljit Singh on Friday for allegedly raping a minor Dalit girl at Surewala village near here. According to a report the 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by him when she was alone in her house. A case under Section 376 of the IPC has been registered.

Fire in record room: Old records of the Model Town subdivision office of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam here were destroyed in a fire which broke out at the office on Thursday. The fire started around 1.25 p.m. in the record room. The local fire bridge controlled the fire within half an hour.

SIRSA
Poppy husk seized:
The police has arrested Jinder Singh under the NDPS Act and seized 5 kg of poppy husk from his possession. The police also seized 5 kg poppy husk from Darshan Singh.

Sentenced: The District Sessions Judge, Ms Nirmala Yadav, sentenced Shiv Bhagwan to life imprisonment for murdering his step brother, Subhash in August 1997. Shiv Bhagwan had shot his brother, Subhash, when the latter demanded money from him in connection with a land dispute with some person here. The police had registered a case against the accused under Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the IPC. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 200 or 2 month jail on the accused and sentenced him to 3 years' imprisonment under the Arms Act.

Recovered: The CIA Branch of the district police arrested two youngmen and recovered some cash, pistol, ammunition and a scooter from them in connection with the looting of Rs 1.21 lakh from a cloth merchant last week. According to the police, Kishori Lal and Surjeet had been arrested. Through the two arrested persons the police had also identified their two other accomplices — Sarvjeet and Joginder Mehra and efforts were on to nab them.

Arrested: The police arrested on Wednesday Kishan Chand, a resident of Dhani Bilaspur (Ratia), and driver of a Haryana Roadways bus which crushed a milkman on April 15 near Kheretan village.

Woman injured: A tractor-trailer ran over a woman, who was crossing a road near Ottu village, 15 km from here, on Thursday night. Both legs of the woman, Dhapa Devi, were crushed badly. She was admitted the Civil Hospital here. The driver of the tractor was allegedly drunk.

Accused surrenders: Sudhir Choudhary, charged with the murder of Baldev Singh, Vice-Sarpanch of Abubshar village, reportedly surrendered to Dabwali police on Thursday. The Vice-Sarpanch was allegedly murdered with sharp-edged weapons by him. Gurdeep and Jagdish, other accused in the case, have been already arrested by the Sirsa police.

Market committee: Mr Krishan Lal Saini, BJP district unit president, has been nominated chairman of market committee here and Mr Hari Prakash Meheriwala has been nominated its vice-chairman.

Case registered: A criminal case under Sections 468, 420, 471, 199 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered against Ram Kumar Gupta, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry Department here and against Dr P.P. Mehta, Veterinary Surgeon, on charge of misappropriation of funds.

SONEPAT
Dharna:
Employees of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam staged a dharna in front of the office of the SDO (Electricity) at Ganaur, 16 km from here, on Thursday to press for the acceptance of their demand for apprehending the culprits involved in robbing and killing a cashier and for the grant of a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured employee. A rally was also held which was addressed by Mr Janardan Prasad Kothari, President of the district unit of the Sarv Karamchari Sangh, Haryana.

Show-cause notices: The state government has served a show-cause notice on the Kharkhaunda municipal committee in the district for superseding it following its failure to pay wages to its employees and make payment for audit of the account. According to official sources, it had given a chargesheet and asked the civic authorities to explain in detail about the allegations levelled against it within a fortnight.top

BILASPUR
Urged:
The state unit of the Sri Sen Bhagat Mahasabha has urged the government to provide 27 per cent reservation to other backward classes (OBCs) in the state. Mahasabha President Raseel Singh Mankotia said this at a two-day state-level conference held at Mehre, 60 km from here on Wednesday. The conference condemned the attitude of political parties which exploited backward classes for political gains.

DALHOUSIE
ITBP jawans:
Mr K.S. Goraya, Commandant, 15th Battalion of Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP), said there had been no incidents of burning of huts of Gujjar in the border areas where the jawans of the ITBP were positioned. Mr Goraya said the jawans of the ITBP had been instructed not to allow the anti-social elements to enter their operation zone and the ITBP would help the Gujjars to graze their livestock in the area in a peaceful atmosphere.
