Robbery case takes new turn KURUKSHETRA, April 19 Following revelations made by a trader, who was robbed allegedly by Maruti borne miscreants on the Pipli-Kurukshetra road here on April 16, the case has taken a new turn. According to the district police chief, Mr Shrikant Jadhav, the trader Mr Mahesh Kumar of Mandi Gobindgarh told the police on the telephone that he had Rs, 40,000 instead of Rs 1 lakh along with account books and the Maruti car used in the crime was not stolen but was hired. Mr Jadhav said Sunil Kumar, one of the miscreants told the police that he and his accomplices Kuldeep, a resident of Kalva village and Raju, a resident of Seenk Paathri village had been watching the trader's movements for the past few months. After drawing up plan, Kuldeep contacted a car driver Jola, a resident of Safidon. The car belongs to Bansi Lal. Sunil Kumar said according to the plan, Kuldeep asked the driver Jola to stay at Karnal and he (Jola) would be picked up in the evening because they had to go to Kurukshetra. The three Kuleep, Sunil Kumar and Raju, started waiting at the possible shops to be visited by Mahesh Kumar. When Mahesh Kumar collected payments from near the Maharana Partap Chowk, at City Thana area and boarded the bus bound for Kurukshetra, Raju occupied a seal next to Mahesh Kumar while Sunil Kumar and Kuldeep follows them in the car. Mahesh Kumar also collected payments from near the local Ambedkar Chowk and started his journey for Pipli on a three-wheeler. As the three-wheeler reached near Sector VII of HUDA, it was stopped by the miscreants. On the basis of statement given by Sunil Kumar, Mr Jadhav said Raju hit Mahesh Kumar on the forehead with the help of the pistol butt while Kuldeep fired a shot injuring Baldev Raj, the driver of the three-wheeler who tried to save the trader and his money. The police identified the trader Mahesh Kumar who slipped from the site of crime before the police reached only after Sunil Kumar showed the shops from where the payments were collected by the trader when the SHO, Mr Desh Bandhu, contacted Mahesh Kumar on the telephone, the later told Mr Bandhu that he possessed Rs 40,000 and only out of which Rs 10,000 each were collected from Kurukshetra and Karnal while Rs 15,000 and Rs 5,000 were collected from Karnal. Mahesh Kumar further told the police that he was hit on his forehead by one of the miscreants with the pistol butt. The miscreants them shot at the driver and the three-wheeler and started fleeing. He took his money bag containing Rs 40,000 with him and left the site. He was getting treatment, at present, he added. Meanwhile, Mr Jadhav has

Plans afoot to revive Agroha
institute ROHTAK, April 19 Lack of vision, paucity of funds and the will to run the institute are considered major reasons for the closure of Maharaja Aggarsen Institute of Medical Research and Education, popularly known as Agroha medical college. The closure of the medical college has caused widespread resentment among the Aggarwal community which blames the managing society for the fiasco. The community has expressed surprise as to how a few functionaries could have decided to close the college without the approval of the general house. The Maharaja Aggarsen Medical Scientific and Research Society, which managed the affairs of the institute, had a 1100-member general house. Each member had donated Rs 1 lakh for the setting up of the college. The community feels the management failed to anticipate far-reaching implications while deciding to close the college. It is also angry with the government for stopping grants-in-aid to the college. A few Faridabad and Delhi-based industrialist members of the general house have reportedly begun consultation to revive the institute but they want the present chairman and office-bearers of the society to resign, owning responsibility for the fiasco. Though the medical college was set up in 1988, regular admissions on its campus were started in 1994. Prior to it, the Rohtak Medical College had been admitting students on its behalf. After admitting students, the society failed to approach the Medical Council of India for recognition of the institute. It was only in 1977 when the students filed a writ in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the society said it did not approach the Medical Council as the institute was established before 1992, the year when the rules of the Medical Council were amended and its approval made mandatory for setting up any medical college. The Medical Council sent its team to inspect the medical college on the directions of the High Court and declined recognition to the institute due to "deficiencies". Interestingly, the government had told the High Court in 1997 that it could not transfer students of Agroha medical college to Medical College, Rohtak, due to lack of infrastructure in Rohtak college. The society needed Rs 20 crore to provide the necessary infrastructure like buildings, staff and equipment to ensure recognition for the institute by the Medical Council. It failed to mop up the desired amount and finally decided to close the college. The government, with a
view to safeguarding the future of the students, has
transferred them to Rohtak Medical College, subject to
approval by the Medical Council. The Council is likely to
send its team to Rohtak to examine if infrastructure is
available for additional students. The medical college
authorities have deposited an inspection fee of Rs 2 lakh
with the council. |
