Consumer Courts
Consumer forum order modified
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, April 19 — The State Disputes Redressal Commission, UT, has modified an order of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-II, thereby directing the appellants to replace a new and faultless, TV set within one month, failing which he shall have to refund Rs 21,990, price of the TV along with costs of Rs 3,000 within a period of two months.

In his complaint filed before the District Forum-II, the complainant, Mr Rajinder Pal Sood, had stated that he had purchased one Akai 21” colour television set from the dealers M/s Udham Electronics, Sector 22-B for Rs 21,990 after availing a rebate of Rs 6,740 on account of the old TV set, as per a scheme. When the aforesaid TV set was found defective, it was replaced by another set, which also had many faults as it was showing only a black and white picture and not a coloured one.

The forum had, in its order passed on November 6, 1998, ordered that dealers shall refund the price of Rs 21,990 within two weeks and also pay Rs 3,000 as costs.

However, during the pendency of the appeal, the dealers who were the appellants, pleaded that due to paucity of stock, they should be allowed a period of one month to supply a new set to the satisfaction of the customer.

The earlier order was subsequently modified and the commission, comprising president Mr J.B. Garg and members Col. P.K. Vasudeva and Mrs Devinder Jeet Dhatt, held that if the appellants fail to pay the price, they shall have to pay interest at the rate of 18 per cent per annum from the date of this order till realisation.Back

Price Watch
Price list not followed by sellers
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, April 19 — A quick survey of the Sector 46 Apni Mandi today revealed that in the absence of proper implementation of the prescribed rates of vegetables by the Punjab Mandi Board officials, sellers were charging the customers according to their will. It was found that in some cases the buyers were even forced to pay the price of vegetables prevailing in the markets, which were higher than the ones in the Apni Mandis.

It was observed that if the price of a kg of tomato was prescribed Rs 8 on the price list displayed by the board authorities, the vegetable was in fact being sold by a majority of sellers between Rs 10 and Rs 12. Same was the case with brinjal, as in place of the prescribed price of Rs 8 a kg, most vendors were selling it at Rs 10 a kg. Similarly, against a price of Rs 6, cucumber was selling for Rs 8 a kg, and against a price of Rs 5, gourd was being offered at Rs 8 a kg. In case of onions, not all, but some of the vendors were selling the vegetable for Rs 8 against the prescribed price of Rs 6 a kg.

When contacted, Mr Pardeep Sharma, an employee of the Punjab Mandi Board, who was on duty, said they were keeping a strict vigil so that nobody charged more than the prescribed price. He said there might have been some stray cases today, as out of four officials deputed by the board, two were on leave. He assured that he would inquire into the matter and anybody found charging more would be fined.

Meanwhile, it was found that most of the commonly used vegetables were cheaper in the Sector 46 Apni Mandi than the other sector markets. If a kg of cauliflower was priced at Rs 7 in sector markets, the vegetable was available in the Apni Mandi between Rs 3 and Rs 5. Similarly, if a kg of lady’s finger could be purchased in the sector markets between Rs 28 and Rs 30, the same could be fetched in the Apni Mandi for Rs 24. Same was applicable in the case of radish as against a price of Rs 8 a kg in sector markets, the vegetable was available in the Apni Mandi for Rs 5.

The prescribed prices of other vegetables in the Sector 46 Apni Mandi were as follows:- potato-Rs 3 a kg, cabbage-Rs 3, brinjal-Rs 8, carrot-Rs 5, bittergourd-Rs 24, garlic-Rs 20, ginger-Rs 36, lemon-Rs 48.Back
