Foundation day
The Amritsar Vikas Manch will celebrate foundation day of the city on October 4. According to a press note issued by the general secretary of the manch, Mr Parkash Singh Badal will be the chief guest. Dr Harbhajan Singh Soch, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, will inaugurate the function.

JALANDHAR

Pensioners' plea
The Jammu and Kashmir Government's pensioners residing in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh have not received their dearness relief instalments which have been due since January, 1997. The All-India Central Government Pensioners Association on Friday urged the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, to look into the matter.
Free medical camp
The local unit of Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India is holding a free medical check-up camp for women at Kamal Hospital on Sunday. Awareness about female problems, during and after pregnancy, promotion of breast-feeding, anaemia during pregnancy and safe motherhood will be given.

Appointed
The Punjab Government nominated Mr Mohinder Singh Hundal, sarpanch of Tewar village, as a member of the District Planning Board, Ropar district, according to a letter received here on Friday.

Fodder
Residents of various villages in the district complained on Saturday that due to heavy rain and certain diseases, the green fodder in this region had turned pale and rendered unfit for cattle consumption.
Sugar non-availability
Resentment prevails among local consumers over the non-availability of sugar at the local government fair-price shops for the past one month. A spokesman of the Civil Supplies Department said here on Saturday that no supplies of sugar had been made to them for the current month. The quota would be supplied to them within a couple of days, he said.

Provident fund
The Punjabi University Non-Teaching Category "A" Officers Association in a statement has urged Lt Gen B.K.N. Chhibber, Governor of Punjab, to increase the rate of contributory provident fund of the university employees from 10 per cent to 12 per cent of the salary on the pattern adopted by Panjab University. The association has also sought uniformity in the payment of gratuity.
Donations
The Bakeman's Industry has donated Rs 51,000 to a nursing home here for the treatment of poor and needy patients. The nursing home has been making a major contribution in providing healthcare in the city.

PHAGWARA

Body identified
The decomposed body, which had been found from Pandwa well, has been identified as that of Ram Lakhan, a migrant worker, who was allegedly murdered by Chandan of Purnia district in Bihar. Chandan was arrested by the police on Friday from Nihalgarh village.
Saplings planted
Over 400 saplings were planted by NSS volunteers of the local Guru Nanak College on Friday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Manoranjan Kalia, Punjab Health Minister.

Contributions
NCC cadets and staff of 3 Punjab (Independent) Company, NCC, here has contributed Rs 2,451 to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund (Shakti). According to Major Varinder Singh, Commanding Officer of the NCC unit, a bank draft in this amount was sent to the Editor of Hind Samachar at Jalandhar on Friday.

Rounded up
Two leaders of the HSEB Workers Union, Mr Dhara Singh and Mr S.D. Kapoor, were rounded up by the police here on Friday for their alleged involvement in various agitations launched by the union in the recent past.

GURGAON

Liquor seized
The Excise and Taxation Department seized 2,050 pouches of country-made liquor from a truck at Rajeev chowk on Friday. According to the Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner, four persons were arrested on charges of smuggling liquor from Rajasthan. One of their accomplices escaped. The police had registered a case under the Excise Act.

Elected
The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the Haryana Government School Teachers Union: President — Mr Parmanand; Vice-President — Mr Manoj Kumar and Ms Chanderkala; Secretary — Mr Kanwar Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Jai Lal.

SIRSA

Dowry case
Five members of a family of Hisar, including two women, were arrested by the police on Thursday in a case under Sections 498-A, 406 and 506, IPC. Sunita Rani of the local MC Colony in a complaint alleged that her husband and in-laws had been harasssing her for more dowry. All accused have been sent to judicial custody.
Dowry death
Bimla Devi, wife of Om Parkash of Bharokhan village, died of poisoning on Friday. In a complaint to the police, Lal Chand of Mandi Kalanwali, brother of the deceased, alleged that his sister was being harassed by her husband and in-laws for not bringing adequate dowry. A case has been registered under Section 304B of the IPC.
Electricity supply
Harsh Kumar, Agriculture Minister, Haryana, while addressing farmers at Nathusari Chopta on Friday claimed that the state government was committed in providing round the clock electricity to its people. Many electricity generation projects were in progress at several places of the state, he said.
Run over
Pramod Kumar Nayak, a boy of Abubshahar village in the district, was run over and killed by a truck, on Friday. The Dabwali police has registered a case under Sections 279 and 304-A, IPC.

SONEPAT

Lok Adalat
As many as 330 cases, including criminal ones, were settled at the Lok Adalat held here on Friday. Mr V.P. Chaudhary, District and Sessions Judge, presided over the function.
Protest
The Residents Welfare Association on Friday protested against the release of wet levy sugar at the government fair-price shops here and other parts of the district. It urged the state government to stop the supply of wet sugar.

CHAMBA

Convention
The district unit of the Anjuman-e-Islamia has appealed to all communities to work wholeheartedly for maintaining the Hindu-Muslim fraternity and national unity in the wake of the circumstances prevailing here. This was emphasised by various speakers at a convention on national integration held here on Friday.

DHARAMSALA

Arrested
The police here has arrested Ravi Kumar, for allegedly carrying silver ornaments weighing over 7 kg. According to the Additional Superintendent of Police, Mr Kapil Sharma, during a routine check at the Kandwal barrier, near Nurpur, the accused travelling in a bus from Amritsar to Harsi Pattan, was found carrying a bag containing silver ornaments. A case has been registered under Section 411 of the IPC.

KANGRA

Lecturer
An extension lecture on industrial chemistry was oranised at MCM DAV College here. A former head of the Chemistry Department at Guru Nanak Dev University, Dr Bhajan Singh, spoke on the occasion. Principal S.K. Sharma said more such lectures would be arranged in the future.

MANDI

Gang busted
A gang of car thieves operating in the region has been busted by the police here. Two persons, including the gang leader, Surjit Lal of Jalandhar, have been arrested and three cars recovered from them.

SHIMLA

Seminar
Prof Mrinal Miri, Director of Indian Institute of Advance Studies here, inaugurated a three-day seminar on Education of the disadvantaged Groups in India: challenges of 21st century" on Friday at the Education Department of Himachal Pradesh University. The seminar is being organised by the Department of Special Assistance in Education.
