Varsity teachers form federation

SHIMLA, Sept 17 — The teachers of the three universities in the state have formed a joint body to look after their common interests.

The newly set up federation, comprising the Himachal Pradesh University Teachers Association, the Dr V.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry Teachers Association and the State Agricultural University Teachers Association, condemned the All-India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation (AIFUCTO) for betraying the cause of university teachers.

It urged Human Resources Development Minister to implement the pay scales recommended by the University Grants Commission for university teachers keeping in view the nature of their service and contribution towards nation-building.

The following were elected office bearers of the Federation of Himachal Pradesh University Teachers Association: president — Dr P.N. Gautam; vice-president — Dr R.K. Nayital and Dr S.S. Kanwar; and secretary — Dr Rajinder Chauhan.

Residents complain of poor DD signal

SUNDERNAGAR, Sept 17 — Residents here have complained that the low power transmission (LPT) tower station inaugurated here on Tuesday is not functioning smoothly. Residents of three adjoining subdivisions have also confirmed poor quality of signals of DD I on their television sets.

The authorities concerned, however, claimed that the tower was of high power with an aerial range of 25 km. Sources of the department said they were relaying programmes only after 5 p.m. as per the directives given to them.
