Strike
Teachers of the local Dashmesh Public School have gone on an indefinite strike in protest against the non-acceptance of their demands. Teachers from the sister concern of the local institution in Kot Kapura also joined the stir on Thursday.

GURDASPUR

Literacy centres
As many as 499 centres have started imparting education under a literacy scheme in the district. This information was stated by Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, at a meeting held here on Thursday. A total of 10,300 literacy centres have been finalised which will start functioning by the end of this month.

LUDHIANA

Campaign
Under the measles control campaign children in the age group of 9 months to 1 year will be vaccinated in the civil hospital, primary health centres, rural hospitals and government dispensaries on September 21, according to Dr R.P. Chander, Civil Surgeon.

Prohibitory orders
Mr Rajeshwar Goel, Subdivisional Magistrate, on Thursday prohibited the carrying of arms, lethal weapons and explosives within the periphery of Kala Amb police station and Trilokpur village during the Balasundri Fair from September 21 to October 5. Offering of coconuts inside the temple has also been banned.
Licences cancelled

The district Agriculture Department has cancelled the licences of five dealers of Aur, Rahon, Mukandpur and Balachaur for selling spurious insecticides, the Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, said while addressing the district Agriculture Production Committee here on Tuesday.
One arrested

The local police has arrested Bhupinder Singh of Chak Hazipur village and recovered a scooter, a revolver and six cartridges from him. A case has been registered against him.

Photo exhibition
Mr Adit Agarwala, a well-known photo artist, delivered a talk on use of filters in black and white and colour photography here last evening at a meeting of photo artists organised by the Photographic Society of Chandigarh. Mr Agarwala, who is the Associate Editor of Viewfinder, a monthly journal of the Federation of Indian Photography, also presented a portfolio of his black and white photographs and spoke about dark room techniques.

Demand
The Panchkula City Youth Congress (I) Committee has demanded telephone facility at the Sector 16 police post here. The President of the city youth wing of the party, Mr Anil Pangotra, said absence of the facility was a handicap as police personnel at the post could not be contacted in case of an emergency.

AMBALA

Arrested
The police has arrested Surinder Sharma, a truck driver, for hitting one of the cars in the cavalcade of the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, here on Tuesday. He was booked under Sections 279 and 336 of the IPC.

BHIWANI

Martyrs' memorials
A meeting of the district Sainik Board was held here on Wednesday. Presiding over the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Krishan Kumar, said that special attention would be paid to the maintenance of martyrs' memorials at Charkhi Dadri and Bhiwani by raising iron grills around them.

NARAINGARH

Eye camp
The local Lions Club, held a five-day eye operation and check-up camp which concluded on Tuesday. The camp was presided over by the Minister of State for Transport and Architecture, Mr Raj kumar Saini. As many as 48 patients suffering from cataract were operated upon and 795 patients were examined.

SONEPAT

Killed
A youth, Birjender, was killed in a clash that took place between two groups at Rajlu Bhogipur village, 10 km from here, on Tuesday. A dispute over land is said to be the cause of the clash. A case has been registered.
Suicide cases

Three cases of alleged suicide were reported in the city and nearby villages on Tuesday. The victims have been identified as Bijender (14) of Pipli Khera village, Nafe Singh (52) of Mahabir colony here and Poonam (16) of Rathdhanna village. According to the police, the victims had taken insecticide.
Buried

Ranbir (20), a labourer, was killed on the spot when he was buried alive under debris at Qumashpur village, 12 km from here on Tuesday. According to the police, the victim was removing earth from a well when the mishap occurred.
ECE workers
Workers of the ECE Mazdoor Sangh and the UTUC (Lenin Sarani) took out a march here on Tuesday in protest against the false cases instituted against Mr Dharambir Singh Dahiya, president of the Sangh and others by the police. They sought the withdrawal of these cases and action against INTUC-led activists.
Rally
The district unit of the HMITC held a rally here on Tuesday urging the state government to implement the Fifth Pay Commission's recommendations and remove anomalies in the pay scales of the employees.

KANGRA

Conference
The Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad will hold a two-day conference at Dharamsala from September 19. More than 200 delegates from all over the state are scheduled to participate in the conference.

MANDI

Criticised
Mr Lawan Thakur, organising secretary of the Mandi Seraj Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, has criticised the market committee for its failure to set up a regulate market at Takoli village for which land had been given to the committee in 1989. He said that this had resulted in exploitation of the growers by middlemen.

NURPUR

Serai
Mr Shanta Kumar, former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, will lay the foundation stone of a hospital serai here on September 18. He has sanctioned Rs 10 lakh from his MP's fund for the construction of the serai.
