Taylor 334 (not out) torments Pak PESHAWAR, Oct 16 (AFP) Mark Taylor hit an epic undefeated triple century as Australia piled up an imposing 599 for four against Pakistan on the second day of the second cricket Test here today. The Australian captain, with a win under his belt and sensing a first ever series win in Pakistan, raised his arms in delight and waved his bat to the crowd after reaching 300. It was the first triple hundred on Pakistan soil and only the 15th in Test cricket. The 33-year-old from New South Wales equalled the highest individual Test score by any Australian, 334, set by Don Bradman at Leeds against England some 68 years ago. He now has his eye on the world record Test score of 375 belonging to West Indian Brian Lara. At close Taylor was 334 not out and Ricky Ponting was undefeated on 76 after adding 168 runs for the unfinished fifth-wicket stand. Australia tormented the home team throughout the day, losing just three wickets as they notched up a healthy 375 runs. Taylor picked up where he had left off after the first day, setting a host of new records on the way. He joined the illustrious company Bradman, Bob Cowper and Bobby Simpson as the only Australians to have posted triple hundreds in test cricket. "It is a great feeling to be there and I can never forget this innings," he said. Taylors triple century came with a boundary through the covers off Mushtaq Ahmed after 681 minutes and 530 balls. He hit 30 fours and a six. The Australian captain passed the highest individual innings on Pakistan soil of 280 not out by the present Pakistan coach Javed Miandad. Greg Chappells record 235 against Pakistan in Faisalabad in 1979-80, the highest by any foreign player in Pakistan, also tumbled along with Graham Yallops 268 at Melbourne in 1983-84, the highest score in a Pakistan-Australia match. Australia lost just one wicket adding 164 runs to their overnight 224 for one in the extended first session. Taylor resuming from 112 gave no respite to Pakistani bowlers and fielders. When on 213, Taylor joined the exclusive group with 7,000 runs in Test cricket, during his 98th Test. Allan Border, David Boon and Greg Chappell are three other Australians to score more than 7,000 runs in Tests. The Australian skipper, dropped twice when 18 and 27, also surpassed his previous best score of 219 against England at Trent Bridge in the 1989 series. Earlier in the morning Justin Langer completed his maiden hundred with a risky single to square leg off 171 balls in 281 minutes, hitting nine fours. The Taylor-Langer pair set a new record for any wicket against Pakistan on Pakistani soil, putting on 279 runs and helped by consistently short bowling from Shoaib Akhter and Mohammad Zahid. Pakistan captain Aamir Sohail took the second new ball in the 82nd over, but it was Azhar Mahmood who finally managed to break up the Taylor-Langer stand. Langer edged one to keeper Moin after making 116. His 279-run stand with Taylor took 362 minutes and came off 501 balls. The Australian captain reached his double century with a straight driven boundary off Mushtaq Ahmed, and Australia went into lunch firmly in command on 388 for two. Mark Waugh helped his captain add another 123 runs for the third wicket, before skying a shot to Salim Malik off Aamir Sohail after making 42. His brother Steve Waugh survived just three balls before being caught by keeper Moin off Shoaib Akhter for a single. Taylor passed his 250 just before tea, ably assisted by Ricky Ponting who, after being ommitted from the Australian team for the first Test, notched up his seventh Test half century in style. Shoaib was the pick of a
poor Pakistan attack with two for 107. |

India India B tie washed out AHMEDABAD, Oct 16 (PTI) Heavy, unseasonal rains this afternoon forced the abandonment of the second round-robin match in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy day-night cricket tournament between India and India "B" here. The rains left the ground at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium totally soggy and forced the match to be called off without a ball being bowled here today. Umpires K Hariharan and K Parthasarathi made two formal inspections before deciding that no play can be possible today. Both the teams were awarded one point apiece. The India team, who dramatically lost by one run to India "A" last night in the opening fixture of the tournament, have completed their league engagements with only one point to their credit. India "A", led by Ajay Jadeja and with two points in their kitty from last nights exciting win, have entered the final ahead of tomorrows last round-robin match against India "B". The India teams chances of making the October 18 final would depend upon the Anil Kumble-led India "B" losing tomorrows match and ending up with an inferior net run-rate as compared to theirs. |

Ashok, Irina emerge champs CHANDIGARH, Oct 16 The weather was inclement today. But that did not dampen the spirits of the junior golfers. Local boy Sandy Lehal returned the best one-under card of the St Xavier's Northern India Junior and Subjunior Golf Tournament that concluded here today. But this fine performance by Sandy Lehal could not undo the massive lead that Ashok Kumar of Delhi had taken in the first three days. And at the end of the tournament Ashok Kumar emerged the under-18 champion with a four-day aggregate of 303. This was four strokes better than Lehal's 307. Just one stroke behind Lehal was Shiv Kapoor (308). Local girl Irina Brar played a bad 17-under round today. But she went on to clinch the under-18 title with a three-round aggregate of 255. Jasmeet Sawhney and Guneet Raikhy were bracketed second with identical scores of 259. Irina also won the under-15 crown, beating her nearest rival, Sharan by 120 strokes. In the under-15 boys section Chiragh Kumar emerged the champion with a total score of 337. This was eight strokes better than the local challenge, Prince S.S. Dhillon, who had a score of 345. The Flying Sikh, Mr Milkha Singh, who gave away the prizes, said he was happy with the way the tournament was conducted and praised the captain of the Chandigarh Golf Club, Mr I.P. S. Mann and his team. The Chairman of the St
Xaviers Schools Management, Mr Andrew J. Gosain,
thanked the club for allowing his school to conduct the
tournament. |
Vivek climbs up to second slot KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (UNI) Talented young professional Vivek Bhandari returned a brilliant course record, firing eight under par 63 to climb up to second slot with a total of four under par 138 as four of the eight Indians in the fray made the cut in the Omega Tour's $ 200,000 Kuala Lumpur Open Golf Championship here today. The 24-year-old Delhi professional Vivek, in smashing the course record, battered his first round score by 12 strokes after making an eagle, seven birdies and one bogey. Chawalit Plaphol of Thailand held a three stroke lead to emerge the leader at the end of the second round with an aggregate of seven under par 135. Today he shot three under par 68. Chawalit upstaged in-form first round co leader John Senden of Australia with a confident display of driving and short iron play. Senden had no answer to Chawalit's natural flair from tee to G. The cut was applied at 148 and 67 golfers made it to the third round. Apart from Bhandari, who stunned the crowd with his brilliant display, three other Indians who made the cut were Gaurav Ghei, Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa all recording identical one over par 72. The Indians who fell by the way side and failed to make it to the third round were, Kanwar Sekhon, Amritinder Singh, Amandeep Johl and Arjun Singh. Bhandari, who carded four over par 75 yesterday to be at joint 68th slot, made tremendous progress to move upto 2nd slot, Gaurav Ghei shot a one over par 72 and with a total of 142 (70, 72) slipped down from joint ninth place to 15th slot. Jeev Milkha Singh one over 72 round to be at 44th slot with an aggregate of 146 (74, 72). Jeev moved up from first round placing of joint 57th slot. Jyoti Randhawa after yesterday's 75 played steadied golf for one over par 72 round to total 147 (75, 72) to be at joint 54th position. Among the failed Indians, Kanwar Sekhon returned two over par 73 for a total of 154 (83, 71) and ended at 107 position. Amritinder had a dismal
round of eight over par 79 and he had a score of 14 over
par 156 (77, 79) for 113th placings. His Chandigarh team
mate Amandeep Johl shot poor 10 over par 81 and ended at
16 over par 158 (77, 81). Arjun Singh who yesterday shot
75 did not play today. |
Mahindra down SBT, clinch CMs Cup NEW DELHI, Oct 16 (PTI) Mahindra and Mahindra, Mumbai defeated State Bank of Travancore (SBT), Thiruvananthapuram by a solitary goal (1-0) to lift the Shyama Prasada Cup in the 4th Chief Ministers All-India Football Tournament here today. Manjit Singh slotted home the winner for the Mumbai outfit in the 43rd minute off a Sanjay Raval pass in a rain-marred final. A steady drizzle and strong breeze disturbed the tempo of the summit clash at the Ambedkar Stadium here. Mahindra and Mahindra forged dramatically ahead almost at the end of the first half through a quick move from the right flank. Sanjay Rawal, who netted the lone goal in the quarterfinal league against SBT, lobbed the ball accurately to Satish Minz, but he failed to trap in front of the goalmouth and custodian Feroz Sherif who ran out to clear also missed as the wet ball spilled out of cupped hands and landed just in front of Manjit Singh, who did not miss the God-sent opportunity. Otherwise also it could have sealed the fate of Kerala as Sherif, in haste to ward off the danger, tried to physically stop Manjit and his action would have surely been penalised. Mahindra played a better game as they succeeded in controlling their game in the inclement weather and slippery ground condition. SBT fought hard to draw parity but failed to pierce the rival defence as they lacked coordination upfront. VP Shaji was off colour and was replaced by M Finian towards the end. The banks defence were also struggling to keep the jeepmen at bay. Mahindra and Mahindra, runners-up in the Mumbai league dominated the match, unleashing frequent attacks on the rival citadel. Defender Jiju Jacob and Sherif under the bar were given a harrowing time. The Mumbai outfit got eight flag kicks but the former Kerala club champions resisted well. Bankmen could have turned the game in their favour early in the first half, but their semifinal hero Sylvester Earnest shot wide off a Shaji pass in the 12th minute. Then after the change of ends also they missed couple of chances to equalise. "Sudden change in the climate and afternoon rains made it worse for us. Players could not adapt to fast changing climatic conditions," bank coach Rajeev Kumar said after the match. On the other hand a much
elated Hakeem, chief coach of Mahindras said his
boys played better and deserved to win. |
Rafter advances to q-finals VIENNA, Oct 16 (AP) Australias second-seed Patrick Rafter has moved into the quarterfinals of the $ 800,000 CA Trophy ATP Tournament by ousting Magnus Norman of Sweden 6-3, 6-2. "I match up well with someone like Magnus," Rafter said after his victory yesterday. Rafter, the US Open champion, has a chance of replacing Pete Sampras as the top-ranked player in the world in the coming weeks. One step in this direction could be the quarterfinal encounter with Britains Greg Rusedski, whose powerful serve stunned local darling Thomas Muster, who is a far cry from his onetime prowess. Rafter, who has a 5-1 head-to-head record against Rusedski, said, "I never played greg on this surface, and I do not know how I will react to his serve. "But I am confident there will be a couple of breaks here and there," he added. Rusedski, last years finalist at the Vienna tournament, took 64 minutes to defeat Muster in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. "Its always difficult to play Thomas in Austria," said the Briton afterward. But I am very pleased that they did not let the crowd getting into it." Asked what his chance was to qualify for the world championship in Hanover, Germany, Rusedski said, "I think I still have a slight chance, but the other guys in the top eight have solidified their position." Earlier in the day, Todd Martin of the USA downed fourth-seed Petr Korda of the Czech Republic. Opening a day of second-round matches, the unseeded American beat favoured Korda 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). Fifth-seed Karol Kucera of slovakia then defeated Germanys Tommy Haas 7-5, 6-4. Haas main problem was his weakness with the first service. Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden subsequently subdued Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-1. Eighth-seeded Tim Henman of Britain rallied to beat Swedens Thomas Enquivst 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-3. SINGAPORE (Reuters): Australian Mark Woodforde got his revenge against the booming serve of Goran Ivanisevic on Thursday as the Singapore Open tennis tournament lost yet another seed. Woodforde ranked 98th, made sure that the bottom half of the draw was without a seed in the quarterfinals after beating the Croat 6-4 7-6 (7-4). The Australian doubles specialist, who turned 33 last month, said it was one of the most satisfying days for him in some time after he sank to below 100 the world rankings. The battle of the left-handers was a fast paced serve-and-volley game. The decisive break in the opening set came in the seventh game. Both men broke serve in the second before the tie-break where Ivanisevics serve deserted him and one double fault and several missed first serves later, he was out of the tournament. Former world number one
Jim Courier, a wild card entry, also moved into the
quarterfinals with a tough 6-4 2-6 7-6 win over
Swedens Mikael Tillstrom. Number one seed Marcelo Rios of Chile rolled over Romanias Andrei Pavel 6-2 6-4 and plays Australian 17-year-old qualifier Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals. LONDON (AFP): Former tennis "bad boy" John McEnroe has branded Davis Cup tennis a joke, adding that the tournament is at its lowest point in history. "Tennis has become a joke in the Davis Cup and the Olympics," said McEnroe. He is also upset at the refusal by Americas top players to turn out for their country. Neither Pete Sampras or Andre Agassi played in the shock semifinal defeat by Italy something that McEnroe would like to see remedied. "It just doesnt seem the players ultimately care about playing. That I never will understand. "Considering the amount of money and all the attention they get from the game, youd think theyd at least want to represent their country for four weeks a year maximum. Mcenroe said it would be too difficult for him to play a direct role in lifting Davis Cup out of the doldrums. "I guess Id
have to get on my knees and beg Sampras to play, which is
one reason I dont want to take the job (as US
captain)," said McEnroe. |
India 'A' win by one run AHMEDABAD, Oct 16 (UNI) A valiant effort by Amay Khurasia went in vain as some good bowling by India A well supported by ground fielding gave a taste of defeat to India Seniors in the opening tie of the rain curtailed day-night one-dayer for the N.P.K. Salve Challenger Cricket Trophy played at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium here yesterday. Defending a meagre total of 181 in 40 overs, India A speedstar Venkatesh Prasad struck the first blow to India Seniors in the very first over when he got V.V.S. Laxman caught behind by Saba Karim on a duck with the teams score reading one. Before India Seniors could recover from the shock, its other opener Somasunder was also sent packing when a Doda Ganesh delivery got the edge of the bat and reached the gloves of the keeper. Karim took the second catch with only 14 runs on the board. Somasunder had put up just seven runs against his name. With the exit of Rahul Dravid, caught again by Karim off Nikhil Chopra, the chances of India Seniors coming back into the game appeared slim. But a fourth wicket stand between Kanitkar and Amay Khurasia added 46 runs stabling the innings somewhat. However Prasad, in his second spell, broke the partnership, getting the wicket of Kanitkar (33) leg before, when the score read 89. The pinch hitter of the national squad Robin Singh also made an early exit leaving the stadium silent. Later a sixth wicket partnership between Khurasia and team captain Nayan Mongia added 57 runs to the score but after the departure of Khurasia defeat became inevitable for the India Seniors. Earlier, India A had also struggled against some razor sharp bowling by the Seniors in the 40-over match, curtailed due to rain, to put up a small total of 181 runs. The heavy outfield, due to rains since Wednesday night, also made scoring of runs difficult for India A which made a cautious start on the wicket more suited to bowlers. The opening pair of Nikhil Haldipur and Gagan Khoda made slow start. However, when the scoreboard showed only 14 runs Agarkar got Khoda leg before wicket with his individual score at six in the fifth over. The second wicket
partnership of Haldipur with Amol Muzumdar was vital as
53 runs were added to the score. However, when everything
was appearing well set Muzumdar lost his control and
played a rash shot off Sairaj Bahutule and paid the
penalty. He made way for the India A captain
hard hitting Ajay Jadeja. |
