ABOHAR

Booked: Jaswinder Kaur, a resident of Kotrana Fatehgarh village, and Gurcharan Singh has been booked by the police under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act for allegedly possessing poppy husk.

AMRITSAR

Taxis impounded: The Transport Department has impounded as many as 35 unauthorised taxis which were operating in the city, according to the District Transport Officer, Mr Gurwaryam Singh. The DTO has warned all taxi operators to obtain permits for plying their vehicles as taxis.

BATHINDA

Rally: Members of the Agriculture Technocrats Action Committee, Punjab, and farmers of various organisations held a rally in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Thursday for non-implementation of their demands which includ professional pay parity for technocrats and conveyance allowance.

GURDASPUR

Gang busted: The district police claims to have busted an inter-state gang of robbers with the arrest of two persons, Mr Gaurav Yadav, SSP, said here on Friday. Five members of the gang had already been arrested by the police. The police recovered two pistols, and five cartridges from them.

LUDHIANA

Fellowship: Dr P.R. Gajri, Senior Soil Physicist, Department of Soils, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, has been given fellowship of the Indian National Science Academy for his work in the field of soil and water management.

MOGA

No telephone: Residents of Bhekha village in this district complain that the village has no telephone facility. The village has a population of more than 2000 and nearly 30 of its residents have applied for telephone connections, a deputation of the villagers told mediapersons on Thursday.

PATIALA

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club Patiala (Quila Mubarak): president — Mr Anil K Gupta; secretary — Mr Anand Khosla; and treasurer — Mr Ajay Garg.
Seva society: The foundation stone of Baba Magni Ram Gaushala was laid here on Thursday at Mathura Colony by Mr Atma Raj. Mr Kimat Lal Jain, general secretary, said the gaushala would be developed and managed by the Niswarth Pashu Seva Society, Patiala.
Competitions: The State Bank of Patiala organised various competitions at Government Primary School, Sher Majara, on Thursday. As many as 250 students participated in the competitions.

One killed: Ravi Shanker was killed and his friend Munish was injured in a road accident on Thursday.

JIND

Fake currency: The police has arrested three persons for possessing fake currency notes. A case has been registered against them.

KAITHAL

Crackers seized: The local police on Wednesday seized six quintals of crackers from a dealer and registered a case against him under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosives Act and under Section 188, IPC. Earlier the police seized 34 quintals of crackers kept illegally by some shopkeepers.

KURUKSHETRA

Ban: The District Magistrate, Mr T.V.S.N. Prasad has prohibited the bursting of crackers in the thickly populated areas of Thanesar, Shahabad, Ladwa, Pehowa, Ismailabad, Babain and their surrounding areas. The order will remain in force till October 22.

SIRSA

Case registered: The police arrested Ramesh Arora, alias Bagga, a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar, and registered a criminal case under Sections 363 and 366, IPC, against him on a complaint of Mr Umed Singh, a resident of same locality.
Four arrested:
Four persons, including three government employees, were arrested on Wednesday while consuming liquor during office hours. A case has been registered against them.

SONEPAT

Five arrested: With the arrest of five persons, the Rai police claims to have foiled an attempt of robbers to loot a petrol station on the GT road at Bahalgarh in this district, Mr K Selvraj, SP, said here on Friday. The police recovered three country-made pistols and four cartridges from them. A case has been registered against them.
Ban : Mr P. K. Mahapatra, District Magistrate, has prohibited the sale of fireworks, crackers and other explosives in the thickly populated areas of the district.

DHARAMSALA

Traffic blocked: Students of Tanda Medical College blocked traffic for one hour near the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday, demanding recognition of the college by the Medical Council of India.

SOLAN

Lecturers association: Members of the HP School Lecturers Association met the Additional District Magistrate, Mr S C Kalsotra on Thursday and handed him a charter of demands. Their main demands include revision of pay scales and creation of a separate directorate of secondary education.
Tax evaders fined: The district Excise and Taxation Department detected 112 cases of sales tax evasion during a special campaign launched this week and collected Rs 2.87 lakh as penalties. The Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Mr K L Thakur, said here on Thursday.
