Sri Lanka slump to 7-wicket defeat

SHARJAH, Nov 7 (PTI) — Zimbabwean opener Grant Flower struck an unbeaten 87 and shared a 76-run fourth wicket partnership with brother Andy to steer his side to a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka with 3.5 overs to spare in the second league match of the triangular Coca Cola Cup Cricket Tournament here tonight.

Zimbabwe were inspired by a deadly bowling spell by speedster Eddo Brandes (3/19) who shook the Sri Lankan top order early on and the World Cup champions never really recovered as they were restricted to 196 all out in 49.4 overs.

Set a meagre asking rate of 3.94, Zimbabwe never looked in trouble, and despite losing two early wickets, the underrated Africans fashioned a fine win scoring 197 for three in 46.1 overs.

The Flower brothers, who came together at the fall of Murray Goodwin (54) with the Zimbabwe score reading 121-3, played cautiously giving no chance to the Lankan bowlers as they collected the required runs at ease in ones and twos.

The World Cup champions put up a lethargic show as the visibly tired looking lot resigned themselves to their second straight loss in as many days.

The islanders lost the inaugural tie yesterday to India three wickets.Top

India keen on giving convincing show

SHARJAH, Nov 7 (PTI) — Buoyed by a thrilling win over world cup champions Sri Lanka to begin their campaign on a winning note, India will look to dominate Zimbabwe when they meet them in their second league tie of the Coca Cola Cup Triangular Cricket Tournament here tomorrow.

India, who struggled to overhaul a modest target in the final stages before young all-rounder Ajit Agarkar saved the day for them, will be wary of the emerging African side who are capable of proving tough customers.

Zimbabwe, despite bowing out in their first match against New Zealand at the just-concluded Dhaka Mini World Cup, are a fast improving side who beat India in the third and final match of the one-day series at home and then stunned them by claiming the one-off Test.

India, who had however claimed the one-day series in Zimbabwe, will look to give off a far better performance and avoid any of the anxiety they faced against Sri Lanka.

Openers Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly, who surprisingly suffered a combined failure yesterday, will be raring to go against the sharp opening attack by Eddo Brandes and Heath Streak, who have gained much respect from the rivals.

Skipper Mohd Azharuddin, who struck a vital 94 and overhauled the world one-day aggregate record held by former West Indian opener Desmond Haynes, will have more thinking to do on improvisations in the batting line-up.

The ploy to push Nayan Mongia up, after omitting Rahul Dravid who has been unable to push the score coming early in the innings, clicked but introduction of Javagal Srinath as pinch-hitter failed once again with the Lanky paceman running himself out this time.

But Nikhil Chopra, the new off-spinner, did himself no harm with a tight spell and it is to be seen whether he is able to maintain the impression he has created with his showing against Sri Lanka.

Zimbabwean hopes will once again rest on the ability of their top order batsmen led by skipper and left-hander Alistair Campbell and the ability of their seamers to keep up a tight line and length with backing from slick fielding, which is drawing comparisons with the South Africans.

The Indian side will be quite fresh after today’s rest, but the Africans should face some strain of playing back to back matches, which are highly taxing but have become a regular feature of the limited overs version of the game. Top

Lara — a prince in exile

LONDON, Nov 7 (Reuters) — Sacked from the job he openly coveted, Brian Lara is now a prince in exile without either a country or county.

Lara was dismissed as West Indies captain over a pay dispute after refusing to join the first official Caribbean tour of South Africa.

The world record holder for the highest innings in both Test and first class cricket will also not return to Warwickshire next year after a troubled season in charge of the English county.

Four year ago, in a shot heard around the world, Lara broke Sir Garfield Sobers world Test record.

In the course of golden summer with Warwickshire he then became the first batsman in history to score more than 500 runs in an individual innings.

Nothing that year seemed beyond the smiling young Trinidadian who scored his runs at a breathtaking rate with gloriously uninhibited strokes to all parts of the field.

Unlike Sobers, who needed to play all year round merely to earn a living, Lara was also able to cash in on his fame and the sponsorship deals rolled in.

Early signs that all was not sweetness and light emerged during 1994, with reports of chronic lateness and clashes with the county captain Dermot Reeve.

Concerned at the possibility of burnout, he decided not to honour his three-year contract with Warwickshire and announced he would not return in 1996.

In the following year, apparently disillusioned with the back-biting and indiscipline among the West Indies team, Lara returned home briefly during the middle of a tour of England and contemplated pulling out altogether.

Persuaded to remain with the team, he reeled off wonderful centuries at Trent Bridge and The Oval but was then stunned to find he was one of four players fined for bad behaviour.

Lara responded by withdrawing from the subsequent tour of Australia two days before the party were due to leave.

He returned to the team for the 1996 World Cup on the Indian subcontinent but by now controversy and Lara were inseparable.

He was forced to apologise for a racist remark, reported in an Indian magazine, and also for his part in an altercation with the West Indies long-standing Australian physiotherapist Denis Waight on a flight from Bombay to London.

Lara's defenders said his problems stemmed from intense frustration with the steady decline in West Indies cricket and his belief that he was the best person to head a revival.

Visibly worn out by the pressures of captaincy, Richie Richardson retired from Test cricket during the World Cup but singnificantly the West Indian authorities did not turn to Lara.

Instead they appointed the admirable Courtney Walsh as interim skipper, finally turning to Lara after another unsuccessful expedition to Australia last year.

Against England in the Caribbean this year, Lara proved an unorthodox but ultimately successful skipper.

The challenge of leading the West Indies also seemed to renew his enthusiasm for the game which had made rich beyond his dreams.

Lara was still capable of rare brilliance with the bat, although his Test average has steadily declined over the years and, in most people's eyes, he has been supplanted as world number one by India's Sachin Tendulkar.

But the demons were still bubbling below the surface as demonstrated during his final season as captain of Warwickshire this year.

His penchant for the unusual, which had generally worked with the West Indies, did not meet with the same success with county team, he was again lax in his off-field responsibilities and, crucially, the runs dried up.

Now Lara is in a cricketing limbo when, at the age of 29, he should be at his peak of his powers.

If his Test career is over, and nothing can be taken for granted in the mercurial world of West Indies cricket, Lara will be remembered as a flawed genius, capable of great innings but not ultimately a truly great player.Top

Bacher feels crisis will be resolved

LONDON. Nov 7 (AP) — There looks like no quick solution to the pay dispute that threatens to wipe out the West Indies historic cricket tour of South Africa.

Informal talks with officials and players yesterday ended with no Indication of progress. Official talks with the disgruntled West Indians was expected to begin today at a London Hotel near Heathrow airport.

Ali Bacher, managing director of the South Africa Cricket Board, travelled to London accompanied by Clive Lloyd, manager of the the West Indies touring squad, and West Indies cricket board member Joel Garner.

Bacher said he was hopeful a letter he delivered from South African President Nelson Mandela could break the deadlock. Mr Mandela stressed his hope that the West Indies can go ahead with its first official tour of South Africa since the end of apartheid.

I can’t see everything being resolved before Sunday," Bacher told the South African press association. "I’m hoping it will be."

The three met informally with West Indies players, who are battling with the WICB over pay and security on the three-month tour.

The WICB on Wednesday fired captain Brian Lara and vice-captain Carl Hooper after they refused to travel to South Africa.

"I’m sure the letter from the President will have a great impression on the West Indies players," Bacher said. "They know him to be a man of great integrity and one of the great statesmen of the century."

The first match of the tour is scheduled to begin next Tuesday. The first Test is scheduled for November. 26.

The tour is considered crucial in promoting the game among South African blacks in a country where whites run the sport.

"This tour is very important for this country," Bacher said.

"It goes beyond bat and ball. It will help enormously towards the reconciliation process in South Africa and will inspire the youth of the country."

The WICB said it would fine the no-show players between five and ten per cent of their tour fees, which could be as much as $ 60,000 for Lara.

Lara and Hooper have wide player support. Only seven of the 16 members of the squad travelled to South Africa, and all seven have since flown to London to rally around Lara.

The crisis is being compared to the one in 1978 when West Indies players snubbed the national team and contracted with Australian magnate Kerry Packer’s world series of cricket.

Lara, rated the world’s best batsman, hinted on Thursday the tour might go on if a compromise can be reached.

"What has resulted so far is a bit unfortunate and I hope it can be resolved in the near future," he said. The main thing is that the West Indies tour to South Africa should be on. The people want the tour to be on and hopefully something positive will come out of it (in the meeting).

"I am not a member of the West Indies cricket team at the moment, but I would love to be there. My life is playing cricket. When it is possible you could be there and you are not there because of circumstances — as in this case — it is very unfortunate."Top

Sampras back to his best; Agassi out

PARIS, Nov 7 (AP) — Russia’s Yevgeny Kafelnikov overpowered a lacklustre Marcelo Rios in the quarterfinal of the $ 2.55 million Paris Open yesterday, easily beating the world No. 2, 6-3, 6-2.

Kafelnikov, the No. 8 seed, took exactly one hour to beat Rios, who was roundly booed off the court by spectators who felt he hadn’t made an effort.

The match turned in the eighth game of the first set.

Kafelnikov broke serve while leading 4-3 with a smart backhand drop volley, and held serve to take the set.

"The first set was unbelievable but he let himself down in the second with some loose play," Kafelnikov said. "From that point on he gave me a lot of extra confidence and I never looked back."

Once you give the idea that you are a bit down, or not satisfied with something, that gives your opponent extra confidence, the Russian said.

Kafelnikov’s win also improves his chances of qualifying for the ATP World Championship in Hanover this month.

Rios still hopes to end the year as number one.

"Hanover will decide it," he said.

Showing no signs of the back injury that plagued him earlier in the tournament, Pete Sampras advanced to the semifinals by beating Australia’s Mark Philippoussis, 6-3, 6-3.

Sampras, looking to end the season as No. 1 for a sixth consecutive year, demonstrated his familiar array of winners against the US Open finalist.

Leading 2-1 in the second set, Sampras played a stunning backhand winner at full stretch past a stunned Philippoussis to break service and set up the victory.

Unseeded Philippoussis beat No. 7 seed Karol Kucera and No. 10 seed Petr Korda on his way to reaching the quarterfinals, but always looked a class below the world number one.

But after the match, a tired Sampras slammed the organisation of the professional tennis circuit, saying it was too busy and caused injuries.

"The more we play, the more chance there is of injury. One of the problems is with the ranking system, which encourages too many matches," he said.
"If I want to play for many more years, which I want to do, I need more of a break. I moan about this all the time but nothing changes," he said.

Sampras said Patrick Rafter’s injury, which will keep the Australian out of the world championships, is an example of the pressure put on players.

"Rafter has been playing too much tennis and now he can’t play in Hanover," Sampras said. "That cannot be good for the game." But when asked why players do not challenge the system, he said "it is hard enough to get the top players in a room together at the same time, let alone to agree on anything. Anyway, there is a lot of bread to be made out there."

In Saturday’s semifinals, Sampras will play Todd Martin, who came back from 1-3 behind in the final set to beat No. 5 seed Andre Agassi 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Agassi double-faulted with Martin on his second match point.

In the other semifinal, Kafelnikov will play Britain’s Greg Rusedski.

Rusedski, who retains a small chance of qualifying for Hanover, had little trouble beating Magnus Gustafsson, 6-3, 6-2 in another quarterfinal contest.

LEIPZIG (Germany) (Reuters): Steffi Graf recovered from a slow start to beat French qualifier Anne-Gaelle Sidot 7-5 6-3 to reach the Leipzig Open semifinals last evening.

Germany’s Graf, back in action after being sidelined for two months following surgery on her right wrist, was made to work by Sidot.

Sidot, who had upset top seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain in the previous round, broke the former world number one in the opening game.

She was leading 5-4 and serving for the set when she allowed the German to fight her way back into the match by hitting a backhand long on break point.

Another unforced error by Sidot handed Graf the first set.

The seven times Wimbledon champion, who has slumped to a modest 22nd in the world, managed the telling break in the eighth game of the second set. She then served for the match, sealing victory after 79 minutes when Sidot hit a backhand return long on match point.Top

Jeev emerges sole leader
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Nov 7 — Giving the best display so far on this Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course, Jeev Milkha Singh sprang to the leaderboard here today. He shot three under 69 on sunless, wet day to obtain the aggregate of 207.

An exciting finish was more than likely tomorrow as two Americans — Gerry Norquist and Mike Cunning — were a stroke behind the leader, while Jyoti Randhawa stood another stroke away at 209. Carlos Espinosa (Mexico) and Scott Taylor (USA) were on 210, only three strokes behind Jeev.

Fully focussed and determined to prove that Delhi was as good as his home course, young Jeev looked an inspired golfer all day. He had four birdies — one in first nine and another three in back nine while a solitary bogey on the 16th in his eventful play, which provided him the card of three under 69.

Expressing satisfaction at his display, Jeev said he could have achieved better score if he had been able to translate birdie chances into reality.

"I am not using ‘driver’ and my game has not been affected at all", said Jeev.

"I will adhere to same routine and attitude tomorrow and will endeavour to achieve even better putting results", added Jeev who looked more relaxed and calm than in the previous years.

Norquist again failed to strike his opening day’s form. He could fire two-under 70 with two birdies in the first nine and another one birdie on the 11th and the bogey on the 13th.

Norquist, who enjoyed an aggregate of 8-under, was not exactly happy with his strokes and putting.

Cunning’s display also showed that he was wavering in his concentration. He had one-under 35 in the first nine, but went one over 37 in back nine. It gave him the score of level-par 72 and aggregate of 208.

Unlike his yesterday’s superlative display, Randhawa was rather wayward in his stroke-production. He could get a solitary birdie on the 2nd and suffered a double-bogey on the 3rd and yet another bogey on the 9th to get two-over 30 in his first nine holes.

Randhawa, however, was not much preplexed by his indifferent display in his back nine. After bogeying on the 10th and the 12th, he swung into form to get three birdies on the 14th, 17th and the 18th to get one-under 35. His day’s score of one-over 73 gave him the aggregate of 209, seven-under.

Randhawa, however, wore an optimistic viewpoint saying that ‘tomorrow will be another day’. A determined and motivated youngster, he could bring about any upset judging from display in the recent competitions.

The visibility was not as good as it should have been. There were occasions when players lost sight of the ball amidst tall trees on both sides of the fairway. But the game was progressing satisfactorily when down came rain.

The play had to be halted for about 90 minutes. When play resumed, the course became slow with greens slower than on the first two days. But the players generally took the varying conditions into their stride as professionals should.

If Jeev sticks to his lead and brings about victory tomorrow, it will be as much as his success as that of Hero Honda, who had sponsored him last year.Top

Rovai annexes singles title

KANNUR, Nov 7 (UNI) — Playing true to his form and reputation, top seeded Federico Rovai of Sweden completed a hat-trick of triumphs annexing the men's singles title in the Indian Masters Satellite Tennis Championship which concluded here today.

In the final, which never rose to any dizzy heights, Rovai stamped his authority in no unmistakable terms, winning 7-5, 6-2 against Prahalad Srinath of India in 80 minutes.

Rovai, who had won the Hyderabad and Bangalore legs earlier, signed off the circuit on a victorious note winning his second match against the Indian Davis cupper in three meetings.

Rovai became richer by winning the winner's purse of $ 800 and 31 ITF points, which is equivalent to 23 ATP points, while Srinath had to be content with the runner-up purse of $ 600 and 11 ITF points, equivalent to 8 ATP points.

The one-day rest seemed to have done a lot of good for the 25-year-old Rovai, who clearly started as favourite against Srinath after the latter's gruelling three-setter in the semifinals yesterday.

"I am really happy. I had to win badly to improve my ranking", Rovai who had got a walkover in the semifinals as his fellow countryman Johan Hede pulled out due to a knee injury, later told newsmen.

"I just pinned him in at the baseline and never allowed him to charge at the net", he added.

Srinath on the otherhand looked a tired lot and virtually threw in the towel in the second after a closely contested first set in which he lost serve in the crucial eleventh game, committing a lot of unforced errors. "I am totally out", he later said.

Rovai survived some anxious moments in the early part of the first set, when he staved off a break point in the second game before holding serve with two successive aces. He pinned Srinath to the baseline, returning hard and deep, and broke the Indian in the third game. Srinath nearly came close to losing his serve again in the seventh game but served well and held by saving three break points.

This gave in some confidence as Srinath broke back Rovai in the eighth when the latter put an easy volley long to make it 4-4. Srinath struggled with his first serves and lost serve in the 11th game. Rovai held serve in the next to win the first set 7-5.

It was Rovai all the way in the second set, Srinath paid the penalty for trying to execute back hand drop shots from the baseline, which landed in the net on most occasions.

When he tried to attack at the net, Rovai responded with his double-fisted backhand passing shots leaving the Indian stranded on many an occasion.

After losing serve in the first game, he had a chance to make amends in the second game but Srinath made some silly errors and failed to cash in on the chance. He managed to battle back from a 0-40 deficit and stretched the game to deuce but he twice netted his returns and Rovai went up breaking Srinath for the second time in the set. It was a mere formality after Rovai held his serve conceding a solitary point for a 4-0 lead.

The set went with the serve and Rovai served out the match in style when Srinath netted a service return, but not before he squandered two match points after leading 40-0. The match should have been over two points earlier, but Rovai in a show of sportsman spirit said the ball was good after the chair umpire said it was long. Srinath came up with a down the line shot to make it 30-40. But Rovai had the last laugh when Srinath netted a service return.

The focus now shifts to Calcutta, where both Srinath and Rovai would participate in the ITF Futures Tennis Championship beginning on Monday.Top

JALANDHAR, Nov 7 — Border Security Force (BSF) Jalandhar created a flutter by defeating defending champions Punjab Police 3-1 in the 15th Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament, in progress at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park, here today.

BSF made some early attempts and in the seventh minute outside-right Shinu Herenz sounded the board after he capitalised on a good through pass in the striking circle. In the 17th minute skipper Sarabjit Singh of Punjab Police scored the equaliser when he received a good cross from outside-right Harmik Singh. At half time both the teams were level 1-1.

In the second half the security men displayed good stickwork. It was again Shinu Herenz who put his team ahead by scoring a goal by a solo effort. In the 60th minute BSF got their eighth penalty corner and defender C Ikka made no mistake to increase the tally to 3-1.

In another match of pool 'B' Punjab and Sind Bank defeated Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, 2-1. The bank men took an early lead in the sixth minute when outside-right Harpreet got a tood pass from Olympian Sanjiv Kumar and opened the account for PSB. RCF too made some good attempts which however, failed to achieve the desired result. At half time PSB were leading 1-0.

In the second half RCF got a penalty corner in the 41st minute and right half J Singh made no mistake with the direct hit. After the equaliser PSB mounted tremendous pressure and forced penalty corners in the 52nd, 54th and 57th minutes but failed to find the target. It was centre-forward Parminder Singh who took full advantage of a pass from Olympian Sanjiv Kumar in the 68th minute and made it 2-1.

Punjab State Electricity Board, Patiala, drew 2-2 with Air-India, Mumbai, in pool 'A'. Air-India forged ahead in the 12th minute when inside-left E Arhana got a good pass and by dodging custodian Mohan Singh pushed the ball in to the goal.

After the lemon break PSEB scored the equaliser through outside-left Hardyal Singh. Inside-left Deepak of PSEB made it 2-1 in the 68th minute.
