25 illegal buildings
razed by MC
Jalandhar, November 3 The demolitions began on a massive scale from near Tower Enclave, where 14 shops were being illegally constructed on a plot. Seven shops had been constructed in two rows, giving it a market kind of a look. The construction had reached the roof level when the team of the Town Planning Department, led by area ATPs Ramesh Chhabra, Lakhbir Singh and Rajinder Sharma, got it razed. Another shop in the vicinity which was coming up without any approval, too, was pulled down. The team then went to from Wadala Chowk to Kuki Dhab where it razed three illegal shops. The next stoppage was at Khurla Kingra where too four unauthorised shops were demolished. Three shops were also demolished near Babu Jagjeevan Ram Chowk. On a complaint by BJP leader Sheetal Angural, an illegal colony coming up at Basti Danishmandan was also razed. The team found that a factory owner had got the plotting done and was in the process of constructing roads inside his huge premises without taking the approval for the same from the Municipal Corporation. The gates of the factory were closed from front to hide the activity inside, but the team reached there and initiated the action. |
Civic body meeting likely to be

Jalandhar, November 3 A pre-House meeting was held late this evening, as Bhatia, representing the SAD, refused to enter into any compromise on issues with Jyoti, who is from the BJP. Bhatia has been alleging that the Mayor did not consult him while finalising the schedule and the agenda of the House meeting. He is also upset as the Mayor had gone ahead with the last Finance and Contracts Committee meeting even as he knew that Bhatia would not be available for the same. Both warring leaders got together at a hotel where an attempt was made to settle issues between the two. BJP CPS KD Bhandari, former Mayor Rakesh Rathour, SAD district president Gurcharan Singh Channi and BJP district president Subhash Sud, too, had come down to calm the two sides. Bhatia had been insisting that he would not go with a verbal compromise and would present his written objections to the Mayor on which the latter should give him written replies. Coming to the Mayor’s favour, Leader of the Opposition Jagdish Raja will not be attending tomorrow’s meeting as he is away. BJP councillor Minta Kochhar, too, is slated to be away and would not attend the meeting. |
Armed robbery at house; servant rounded up
Jalandhar, November 3 Today, a police team scanned the CCTV footages of more than three houses in which some suspected vehicles and persons were noticed. A suspected bike-borne man was found roaming near the house, but his exact identity could not be established due to the lack of clarity. Rajiv Munjal, a wholesale trader, has not told the police about the exact loss of cash and valuables looted by the miscreants. He only confirmed the loot of his Swift Dzire car to the police. The way robbers committed the crime has been raising the suspicion of some known persons. Following the incident, Police Commissioner Yurinder Singh Hayer, along with DCP Naveen Singla, also reached the spot for investigation. The incident took place at 8.30 pm last night when Munjal had left for a walk in the nearby park. In a few minutes, three armed persons entered the house and took his mother Sudarshna, wife Nidhi, cook Sonu and servant Chotu captive at gun point. His son Ansh, after suspecting foul play, hid himself behind curtains. The house owner suspected that the robbers could be some known persons because the moment he left the house, they entered the house. They were also aware about each nook and corner of the house. As of now, it is unclear who committed the crime, Munjal told the police. |

The scheme has been getting delayed endlessly owing to the protests of the employees time and again. The matter has even gone to the Deputy CM office. A meeting on the issue was held last week after which the new deadline of November 5 had been announced. |

jalandhar: noise pollution-II Gagandeep Singh Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, November 3 Since the numerous rules and regulations have already been made and violated before, the residents still doubt that the recent guidelines may not be implemented. They say that the toughness and action towards the pressure horns would only be a temporary measure.” “Whenever we go out, the sounds of pressure horns mainly used by bus operators give us a nightmare. I avoid going out until it’s really very urgent just because of the noise pollution on the road. I have read in some news reports that the traffic police have started taking action against those using pressure horns. I don’t think the police will carry on doing this for long as there have been examples where previously made regulations have been violated. Besides issuing challans, the transporters and school and college students should be made aware of the health hazards caused by such things,” said Sanjeev Kumar, an international sportsman. “The use of pressure horns on the GT roads is a major source of noise pollution. It not only causes health issues but also leads to accidents sometimes. Apart from bus operators, college going students are the second most users of pressure horn. Despite the fact that so many rules and guidelines have been made on the issue, the traffic police seem to have failed to take action against the users. Strict laws and proper implementation of those laws are the need of the hour. I believe on the spot heavy penalty cum imprisonment must be awarded to those indulging in such acts. Apart from this, the parents must educate their children about the same,” said Kuljeet Happy, a businessman. “I don’t think the traffic police have been doing their jobs properly. The prevalent corruption in the system is perhaps one of the reasons behind the failure of the system. Since so many rules and regulation have been made, yet due to lack of proper implementation, the practice is still going on. I think the police should be made accountable to the public on issues of public concern. On the other hand, I think bus operators have some political contacts, which are used to pressurise the police. Therefore, the police must be made free from such anti-social practices,” said Jessa Bharadwaj, a private company employee. “Despite having several laws, crime is still on the rise all over the world. I don’t think it’s due to lack of laws that the people have been using pressure horn. I think the people are not aware the annoyance and nuisance created by pressure horns. It doesn’t cause health issue but depicts us as an uncivilised and anarchists. This is the stigma on a nation that is brought by such sordid practices. The government needs to be very careful and sophisticated towards these things. The government must launch some programme at school level to teach the students about manner and antiquates. I have seen in the foreign countries, the horns are used until it’s really urgent,” said Vikas Mehandirata. “The pressure horns are predominantly used by the bus and truck operator in the state. Despite so many laws against the practice is still prevalent among them. As per the Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, the citizens have a right of a decent environment and they have a right to live peacefully, right to sleep at night and to have a right to leisure which are all necessary ingredients of the right to life. I think the police system has failed ensure the same. I assume both an awareness campaign and strict implementation of laws should be done to get rid of the pressure horn menace in the region,” said Jasdev Riaz, a private company employee. |

Notwithstanding CM’s land offer, Christians angered by ‘false’ promises
Jalandhar, November 3 Six years down the line, none of the demands have been met. But when the CM made a declaration to provide land for Christians for graveyards at a function last evening, most Christians, especially the impoverished ones in the district, have only been more angered by the CM’s statements. Terming the CM’s kind words just another pre-Christmas lollipop, Christians say it would need something big to restore their faith in the government. With Jalandhar being one of the cities which has the oldest association with Christianity in the state, there are those who say the district has lakhs of Christians but presently riddled by a crisis – both of identity and economics. While officially there are just a couple of thousand Christians in the state, activists say they are poorly supported by the
government. “As 99 per cent of the Christians in the district are Dalits, so there is a major lack of political awareness among them. The government is profiting out of the situation. Some people adopt Christianity formally, yet others choose to remain Dalits on papers because they know as Christians they won’t get any dividends. Christian students whom we asked to apply for minority scholarships years ago are yet to get them. If we ask someone to apply now, they are reluctant. Among farmers, too, while benefits still apply for SC farmers, for Christians there are none. For the government Christians are no more than a vote bank for which ambitious declarations are made before Christmas and then forgotten. Be it local or from elsewhere, the Christian leadership has also failed to address the problems,” said Tarsem Peter of the Pendu Mazdoor Union. Tarsem Masih activist of the Punjab Christians Movement said, “There are many villages where people do not have lands for graveyards. For generations, same few kanals of land is being used for burying the deceased. There isn’t an MLA or leader of the area who we haven’t met regarding our demands. It seems like a joke when after all this the CM suddenly says we are going to be provided with land. For all these years, despite promises, the government hasn’t provided anything. It hasn’t even met the basic promises made in 2008.” A number of villages in the district need lands for proper graveyards. Residents rue while on paper Christians are decreasing, there has been a vital increase in the people adopting the Christian lifestyle, which residents rue lead to the misconception that Christains are decreasing when there is actually a rise in their numbers. |
