During inquiries about the documents produced before the embassy, the same were found to be fake and forged. During questioning of the visa applicant Gurjit, he told the police that all documents were prepared by a travel agent Ravi Kumar, a resident of Sultanpur Lodhi. The Delhi police cops initially conducted a raid at Sultanpur Lodhi but didn't find the travel agent. Later, the police was told by locality people that Ravi was now living in some Shakti Nagar in Jalandhar. Police to write to UP govt for nabbing Bachu Miya
Jalandhar, June 15 Bachu, who allegedly enjoys political patronage in UP, is the only link with the Jalandhar police which can bring many persons involved in smuggling trade behind bars. As per police claims, Bachu’s uncle was a former mayor and former MLA of Rampur under whose patronage he reportedly set up his empire of smuggling activities. Bachu’a name had cropped up after his aide Mumtaz was arrested by the Jalandhar rural police on June 11 with 1.25 kg of heroin. The police said Mumtaz, who was the courier of Bachu, had revealed his (Bachu's) name and political links in UP during interrogation. Interestingly, the 15-member team of the Jalandhar rural police had also raided the house of Bachu Miya in Rampur in UP two days ago, but the police party had to return empty handed, as Bachu had already escaped from the house before the police reached. Although the police had questioned some of the relatives of Bachu in UP, they didn’t reveal any whereabouts of Bachu. Now, the police are contemplating to take the direct help of the UP police through the UP government. A senior police official of Jalandhar rural police, while confirming the development, told The Tribune, “ The Jalandhar rural police will soon write to the Punjab Government which, in turn, will write to the UP Government to seek the help of Police officials claim that Bachu has been in the trade for the past several years. “He is not only involved in inter-state smuggling activities. He is also supplying narcotics to other countries, mainly Europe. Once Bachu comes in our net, many national and international smugglers will be in Jalandhar rural police’s net,” the police claimed. Notorious past
Bachu, who is notorious in smuggling trade, has reportedly a political clout in UP. He is being used by politicians in UP for various notorious activities. Criminal cases, ranging from kidnapping, thefts, attempts to murder and even booth capturing during elections, were registered against him in the recent past. Bachu’s paternal uncle (former mayor and MLA) was earlier with the Congress party and has now reportedly shifted his loyalty to the Samajwadi Party (SP). |

Memorial: Govt yet to finalise architect
Jalandhar, June 15 The work for the nearly Rs 250-crore project has been going on at a snail's pace as the tenders floated for the hiring of the architect of the building are yet to be screened and finalised. Even if the committee is able to finalise an architect for the project by this month, it will certainly take another two to three months for him to prepare plans for the building which is to come up in a 25-acre land on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway. Once that is done, the committee will then again invite tenders from the builders for the construction part which in no way is likely to take at least another four months. The delay has been there despite the fact that Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, had in April last year, set up a 10-member panel for the selection of the architect and finalising of site plan for the memorial. The CM had also then given a two-year deadline for the construction work, but even 14 months after the announcement, the team is to yet to cross the first step. Panel to finalise architect formed a year ago
The 10 panelists, who are to shortlist a reputed architect to finalise the modalities for hiring the services of the architect for the construction of the monument, include Health and Family Welfare Minister Madan Mohan Mittal, former senior BJP Minister Balramji Dass Tandon, member Rajya Sabha Balwinder Singh Bhunder, former minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Som Parkash, Advisor to the Chief Minister Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, editor of Punjabi daily Barjinder Singh Hamdard, besides Punjab Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and Principal Secretary Cultural Affairs. Film personalities to be roped in
On suggestions by the committee members, the CM had also then agreed to invite expert advice from prominent film and TV personalities like Shyam Benegal, Gobind Nehlani and Parkash Jha for the proposed 90-minute documentary on the Independence movement, specially highlighting the role of Punjabis in three languages - English, Hindi and Punjabi. It has also been proposed to rope in Punjabi theatre personality and playwright Kewal Dhaliwal, filmmaker Amrik Singh Gill and TV artiste Lakhwinder Singh Johal for the project. Badal's visits
It was on September 12, 2012, that the Punjab CM had come to the memorial site at Kartarpur and finalised the land. He had then suggested that efforts be made to acquire another 15 acres to have the monument constructed in a total of 40-acre chunk which has so far not been possible. The CM had also visited a local office that had been set up for the memorial's foundation on Ladowali Road in April last year and announced that the construction work would begin in six months. Concept committee
Till date, the members have only paid a visit to the places of historic importance and prepared a concept plan report. Prior to its finalisation, the concept team and 16 members of the foundation team had visited the Cellular Jail at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands for its light and sound show, viewed laser show on pattern at Hazoor Sahib and visited the famous Akshardham Temple at Gandhinagar in Gujarat, Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Teen Murti Bhawan in New Delhi and the hi-tech museum showcasing significant aspects related to the national freedom struggle in Parliament in New Delhi to take ideas and inputs from there. Even the Chief Minister had toured along with the members of the concept committee at some of the places. Nine meetings of the concept plan committee had been held before finalising it. The concept committee members include Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor Punjabi University Patiala, Dr JS Grewal, former VC Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, Dr Kirpal Singh, Chandigarh-based eminent historian, Prof Pirthipal Singh Kapur, former pro-VC Guru Nanak Dev University, Dr KL Tuteja, formerly with Kurukshetra University, Dr Harish Sharma of Guru Nanak Dev Universit and editor of a vernacular daily Dr Barjinder Singh Hamdard. The plan
The memorial is aimed at disseminating knowledge about the sacrifices made by the martyrs from Punjab in the freedom struggle. The whole idea was to take the visitors, especially the youth, to a virtual historic journey portraying the heroes of Punjab in the freedom struggle starting from the first Sikh war led by Bhai Maharaj Singh in Multan in 1849 to independence and partition. The site, which falls on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway has been selected by the state government keeping in mind its easy accessibility to visitors and to add another tourist destination for those on way to the Golden Temple. The memorial is being planned in such a way that it has several galleries to showcase history through statues, LED screens exhibiting documentaries, light and sound shows and laser shows. He said the galleries would depict various chapters of history, including Kuka Movement, awakening brought about by Punjab Singh Sabha Movement, Arya Samaj, agrarian unrest of 1906-07, role of Madan Lal Dhingra and Lala Lajpat Rai, Ghadar movement, Rowlatt Act and Jallianwala Bagh massacre, rising of Udham Singh, Central Sikh League, Khalsa College, Gurdwara Rakab Ganj, Non-cooperation Movement, Akali movement and the Gurdwara Reform, Babbar Akalis, Revolutionary Movement, Bharat Naujawan Sabha and Bhagat Singh, Kirti Kisan and the Left movement, Praja Mandal, Civil Disobedience Movement, Quit India Movement, INA and Independence in 1947 to be finally concluded with Partition problems. A replica of the historic Komagata Maru ship would most likely be put up with the visitors made to conceptualise the 1914 tragedy. Besides, there would be other attractions, including food joints and shops selling rare souvenirs linked with the freedom movement. Now, new minister, principal secretary
Ever since the project had been started former Cultural Affairs Minister and Kartarpur MLA Sarwan Singh Phillaur and Principal Secretary of the department SS Channy had been supervising the project, but now both of them have changed. After Phillaur had quit, Sohan Singh Thandal is the new minister. Post Channy's retirement, Raji Parmod Shrivastava is the new Secretary of the department. Even the post of CEO of the foundation, which has been held by Vinay Bublani, had remained vacant for about three months as he had got posted as ADC, Tarn Taran. Bublani, however, returned on the same post about 10 days ago. Asked about the delay, Bublani said it happened because of elections. "I was also disassociated from it for a few months. Now that things have come back on track, the project has resumed pace and an architect is likely to be finalised soon," he said. |

Jalandhar, June 15 Being an industrial city, the railways play a significant role in its progress. However, the deplorable condition of the city railway station has brought a bad name to the city. The railway station has been criticised by passengers and NGOs for the lack of cleanliness, security lapses, health and safety issues. The railway authorities are often criticised by passengers for their failure to maintain cleanliness and hygiene at the railway stations. However, the authorities seem to have turned a blind eye towards the issues, causing inconvenience to people. Litter can be seen scattered at all platforms. Toilets in waiting rooms are also in a poor condition. Substandard food is being served to the passengers. Tea stalls and other eateries have not been inspected for long. When contacted, Chief Medical Officer RL Bassan said he was not responsible for the inspection of food at the railway station as it was the responsibility of the railway authorities. KS Nagra, co-convener, Centre for Human Rights, Initiative Training and Research Association, in a complaint to the Commission has stated about a report in a newspaper, highlighting the condition of the railway station. Rashpal Singh, Superintendent, Government Railway Police, said it was worrisome that the cameras were not working. Though it is the responsibility of the Railway Department and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to take care of the security measures at the railway, nothing has been done by them. "We have written to the Patiala headquarters to fix the problem as soon as possible," he added. He said there should be more security cameras and recording systems at the railway station. Meanwhile, Railway Police Force SHO Amit Kumar Sharma refused to comment. Moreover, only one metal detector is available at the entrance of the railway station while other entry points are devoid of it. The number of security guards is also low. There is no technical system to check bags and other belongings of passengers at the entrance of the railway station. It was found that passengers were not being frisked with metal detectors. Some people alleged that the railway station premises was misused by anti-social elements. Inadequate seating arrangements The two waiting rooms at the railway station remain crowded due to which passenger wait for their trains at the railway platforms. Moreover, there is lack of proper seating arrangements. Their belongings remain scattered at the platforms, resulting in chaos at the railway station. Health-related issues Water keeps leaking from water coolers at the railway station. Some of the platforms have developed potholes. Sources said though the first-aid facility was available there, very few employees were trained. They cannot do more than administering bandages or providing pain killers. Even the trained staff do not know about the latest techniques. Sources said the hospital being by the railway authorities did not have a woman doctor and a dentist.
