Possibility of breach in Sirhind canal looms large
Bathinda, May 14 The water, at many places in this canal, usually flows on a par with the level of its embankment, though at present, the water level is low due to the diversion of water to other canals to plug in the breach. Canal embankments have seen severe erosion at many points, but lack of funds is hindering any possibility of repair work. Last year, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal laid the foundation stone of the side lining project, but the project failed to take off as the department did not receive the funds so far. It seems that despite being aware of the situation, the administration is apparently waiting for a similar incident to take place before taking a notice of its vulnerable condition. A visit along the canal banks today revealed damaged embankments at various points. The poor condition of the canal banks poses danger and threat to villages, agricultural fields and to various localities of the city, situated along the canal. Last year also, an 80-foot breach had occurred in the Sirhind canal in Bir Talab village, when water entered the agricultural fields, houses and the mini-zoo. Hardev Singh, a resident of the nearby area, said they have brought the matter to the notice of the concerned department many a time, but each time, they claim that soon work on constructing a permanent embankment will start and there was no need to worry. Sanjiv Kumar, a resident, said it was high time that the administration should start its side lining project, as people always live under the fear that anytime a breach can take place and damage our household. An Irrigation Department official said the canal needs an immediate repair. A project for its repair and relining has already been finalised and they were waiting for the funds to reach. Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav admitted that the condition of the canal embankment was vulnerable, but he assured that Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal had laid a foundation stone of the project and the work will start soon. |
Minor rape victim demands justice
Bathinda, May 14 The girl’s parents and members of the farmers’ union today met the IGP Paramraj Singh Umranagal and demanded that the third accused in the case, Gurlal Singh, who has been announced a proclaimed offender by the court, be arrested. During the protest, the victim’s parents announced a protest outside the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bathinda Zone, on May 26 at Bathinda. Members of the farmers’ union and the victim’s parents alleged that despite four months having passed, the accused was roaming freely. The police have not arrested him due to political pressure. They also alleged that the accused Gurlal Singh was present along with his father and other family members during the wheat harvesting in his village, and the SHO Lakhewali and the DIG Bathinda, were informed about it immediately, but the police did not arrest him. Since May 1, Gurlal’s family has been staying in the village and he is in constant touch with them. The victim’s family added that a number of times, the information was given to the police but the cops did not take any action. Meanwhile, IGP Paramraj Singh Umranagal assured the victim’s parents that immediate action will be taken in the case after May 17. It is worth mentioning that the three accused had gang-raped a minor girl on January 24. The police, however, arrested two of the accused and presented them before the court. But the third accused Gurlal Singh is still at large and the police had failed to arrest him. |
PRTC officials, workers’ meeting remains inconclusive, dharna on
Bathinda, May 14 The employees sat on a dharna on Monday after a permanent driver, Baljinder Singh, apparently fell ill while driving the bus. The employees have been demanding transfer if the duty inspector (DI) Gurcharan Singh, releases salaries by the 10th of every month and releases overtime by the 20th of every month and provides a staff room for the drivers to rest between trips. The workers presented all these demands during the meeting with the GM and insisted that the DI be changed on a priority basis. The meeting remained inconclusive as the GM refused to give in to any of the demands. “The DI is a hardworking and trustworthy employee of the PRTC. The contractual employees are upset with him since he keeps a track of their trips and asks them for reasons if they cut short a particular route. The contractual employees are creating problems for other drivers and commuters as they want one of their own men to be made the duty inspector so that they can work as per their whims and fancies,” said Joshi. He also added that since the code of conduct had been imposed, they couldn’t take any action against the protesting employees since the PRTC authorities didn’t want to. Passengers face the heat
While the protesters and the PRTC officials slugged it out between themselves to reach a logical way of ending the impasse, the passengers remained at the receiving end. Sunita Rani and her husband Halka Yadav claimed they had to wait for close to four hours to get a bus to Haridwar. Shipra Sharma, a student of a private university located in Chandigarh, stated that she waited for two hours to board a bus to Chandigarh, but had to return home since the possibility of getting a bus looked dismal. Loss to PRTC
Apart from causing problems to the commuters, the dharna has been causing substantial losses to the PRTC. While during the first two days of the dharna, the PRTC suffered a loss of about Rs 5 lakh, on Wednesday too, only 60 per cent of the total buses were plying on the routes. Joshi, however, sounded upbeat and stated that the permanent employees were working as usual and on Tuesday, the collection was to the tune of Rs 7.95 lakh and on Wednesday, it was expected to be around Rs 10 lakh. However, president of the PRTC Workers’ Union (Azad), Bhola Singh claimed that as many as 90 buses were kept from plying and some main routes like Chandigarh, Jammu Katra, Anandpur Saheb, Dharamshala, Shimla, Haridwar and Dehradun had been affected. |

Rajindra College may introduce online admission
Bathinda, May 14 Talking to Bathinda Tribune, Vijay Kumar Goyal, principal, said, “The plan to make the admission process online is in its nascent stage right now. We are trying our best to begin it this academic session. Once the plan is in place, the students will not have to come to the college personally to submit their forms. They will also be able to easily apply for more than one course without any hassle.” “The online process will also make the entire admission process a transparent one as the merit lists will also be displayed on the website of the college. The online procedure will prove to be a boon for both the students aspiring to take admission in the college and also the faculty members involved in the admission process,” said Goyal. Varsity team to come for inspection
A team of experts from the university is scheduled to visit the college next week to check if the college has the infrastructural and faculty to support introduction of five new courses starting from academic session 2014-15. The college is planning to introduce MA (History), MA (Philosophy), MA (Mathematics), MSc (Physics) and BCom (Professional) course. While the college has the permission from the government and the DPI (Colleges), it has prepared a plan and sent it to the Punjabi University, Patiala, for approval. “Our plan to introduce five new courses will materialise only after the team of experts inspects the college and gives its nod. The inspection will be done only after the election counting is over,” said Goyal. Since these courses will be offered under the Higher Institute Society of the college, the students will have to shell out more money. The salary of lecturers taking classes in this society is paid out of the PTA funds, which are collected from the students. Counters will also be set up in the college to aid the students for offline admission process as well. Principal Vijay Goyal stated that to help the students, who don’t have access to internet and can’t avail the facility of online admission, the help desks will be set up on college premises so that both the processes may be held simultaneously. “While the students will be able to apply for admission using the online procedure, their certificates will be checked during the counselling sessions.” Said goyal. |
Punters betting high on Harsimrat Kaur Badal
Bathinda, May 14 According to some of them, Harsimrat Kaur Badal has a fairly good chance of defeating Manpreet Badal from the Bathinda parliamentary seat. Bookies are busy these days betting on the Lok Sabha results instead of the Indian Premier League. It’s worth mentioning that betting on any election or cricket match is illegal in India. But the way it is going, it seems that there is no one to stop it. According to the prevalent information, heavy bets are also being made on the number of seats the SAD-BJP and the Congress will be able to secure in the state. As per the bookies, the Congress will win 8 seats, the Aam Aadmi Party one seat and the BJP-SAD combine four seats in the state. They also maintained that there is very close fight on 2-3 seats in Punjab.
