I have managed to find place in hearts of people: Modi
Dehradun, April 29 “The more the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi waited for the CBI to jail me, the more the people loved me and I managed to find a place in their hearts. On the one hand is their desire to put me jail, and on the other hand is the love of 1.5 crore of people,” said Modi while addressing a well-attended election rally in Herbertpur (Vikasnagar). Modi said that the Gandhi family cannot accept the fact that a person who sold tea in a train compartment was posing a challenge to them. ''How can a former tea-seller challenge them? They are so angry with me that if they were to see me in person, they would eat me raw. What do these people know about poverty? They were born with a silver spoon,'' he added. Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi for organising annual tours to villages to get acquainted with poverty, Modi said that his actions were similar to the people who go out to view the Taj Mahal and get themselves photographed. “Whenever Rahul visits poor people's houses, the poor are left with no food. I have seen poverty because I slept with an empty stomach in my childhood. It is your love that has brought me here,'' he stressed. Sounding confident of the way people had voted so far, Modi said that the government run by the mother and son duo will go. ''Nobody can save them. They are only spreading lies and comforting themselves with false hope,'' he stressed. Modi heaped praise on the BJP candidate from Tehri Mala Raja Laxmi Shah for working tirelessly ''to wipe out the tears from the eyes of the people hit by the mid-June disaster last year.'' “She is a Rajmata in the true sense of the word and despite her age, she ran from one house to the other enquiring about the welfare of the people of Uttarkashi and Tehri,” he said. Modi said that she reminded him of the late Rajmata Vijay Raje Scindia with whom he had the privilege to work closely. He also praised BJP workers at the grassroots in general for helping others at the time of the calamity. "I salute them for rising above their own personal losses incurred in the tragedy to be able to help those in need," Modi said. In the end Modi exhorted the people of Tehri to give BJP 300 seats in the country and five seats in the state. |

‘Only politics of development can save nation’
Dehradun, April 29 The politics of casteism, communalism and nepotism destroyed our country and only politics of development could save the country,'' Modi said at an impressive rally held at Herbertpur in Vikasnagar that falls under Tehri parliamentary constituency. Speaking further Modi said that the country was full of diversity and a separate model should be developed for each state keeping in mind its diversity. ''To our bad luck, we follow a formula of one size fits all, which is devised while sitting in closed AC rooms in New Delhi,'' he said. Modi said that to get rid of this lopsided planning the BJP had laid emphasis on preparing a separate policy for the Himalayan states in its manifesto. ''The river Ganga has been a source of inspiration and is a life sustaining force. It should be used to change the life of the people,'' he added. He also emphasised on the need to channelise the herbal and tourism potential of the state. Addressing a well-attended election rally Modi said that he felt it is in his fate to do good work for the people of Uttarakhand. Earlier, he castigated the governments of the Centre and state for failing to take up rehabilitation work in the disaster affected areas. ''The situation remains as it is and there is no change,''he asserted. All the top leaders of the BJP, including BJP president of Uttarkhand Teerat Singh Rawat, national general secretary Trivender Singh Rawat, MLA Ganesh Joshi, MLA Harbans Kapoor, senior BJ P leader Munna Chauhan and Raja Laxmi Shah, BJP nominee from Tehri, were present at the rally. |

Battle of ballot sees major parties winning over ex-servicemen
Dehradun, April 29 According to the state government figures, there are over 1.25 lakh ex-servicemen in the state while more than one lakh are serving in defence forces. Nearly one lakh, who retired from various paramilitary forces, are living in the state while more than one lakh are still serving. There are 34,675 widows of defence personnel. Just days before the implementation of the model code of conduct, the UPA government had announced the implementation of the “One Rank One Pension’ scheme, a demand that was being raised by ex-servicemen for the past several decades. The move was seen as the last attempt by the UPA government to get support from the section in the General Election. However, the move not only backfired but also drew the ire of the fraternity, which feel that it has been taken for a ride as the demand has been accepted in principle and no written orders have been issued. Notably, ex-servicemen are likely to play a decisive role when the state goes to the poll on May 7. Nearly 15 per cent of the voters in the five Lok Sabha constituencies comprise ex-servicemen personnel of armed forces and paramilitary forces. Both the BJP and the Congress have the backing of former generals in the state. Maj Gen BC Khanduri (retd), the BJP candidate from Pauri Garhwal, has remained Chief Minister twice ever since the state was carved out of Uttar Pradesh. On Monday, Lt-Gen HB Kala (retd), a former Army Commander, joined the state BJP unit. Earlier, 15-20 retired senior Army officers had openly pledged their support to the BJP. The support being extended to the BJP, particularly by the ex-servicemen fraternity, is nothing short of a major setback for the Congress that has gained nothing but notoriety for being "insensitive" towards the plight of personnel of defence forces. In one of his earlier visits to the state capital, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had held a close door meeting with ex-servicemen of the state. Even though he made several promises, he failed to deliver. Vary of their diminishing popularity among the ex-servicemen of the state, in charge for the state Congress affairs Rajiv Shukla had recently organised a meeting of Lt Gen TPS Rawat (retd) and Lt Gen Gambhir Singh Negi (retd) with Congress President Sonia Gandhi. It is learnt that Shukla wanted these two senior Generals to campaign in the state to woo the ex-servicemen. Lt Gen TPS Rawat (retd) is a former Director General of Assam Rifles and was part of the Cabinet during the Congress regime in the state from 2002 to 2007. Interestingly, Rawat joined the BJP after some differences cropped up with top leaders. However, the Congress brought him back to gather the sympathies of the ex-servicemen. Meanwhile, Lt Gen Gambhir Singh Negi (retd), a former Commandant of the Indian Military Academy, has been actively campaigning for the party. Apart from roping in bigwigs from the fraternity, the Congress-led state government also increased the amount being given to the gallantry award winners. The financial assistance for re-marriage of the widows of martyrs, education of the dependents, scholarships and the marriage of daughter has been increased substantially. |

Ex-minister questions Nishank’s marital status
Haridwar, April 29 Upadhyaya after attending election campaign meetings for party candidate Renuka Rawat, addressed a media gathering, where he asked journalists to enquire about the matrimonial status of Nishank. “It’s a request that when you meet Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, do ask him how many children he has and the number of his wives. He has been involved in Kumbh scams too, removed me from the government quarters though I acknowledge I was staying a bit longer as my tenure of legislator had got over as I had lost the elections,” stated Upahdyaya, who served in capacity of Minister for Industrial Development in the Narayan Dutt Tewari -led state government. When The Tribune questioned the purpose behind this personal diatribe, the legislator said that the public should know about one’s personal life too as politicians are public figures. But when questioned that BJP Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi kept a secret about his wife Jasodha Ben, Kishore said that it was a different matter altogether as Modi had made it clear in his election affidavit. Later realising his mistake as a volley of questions were put before Upadhyaya regarding his intention behind NIshank’s personal life matter, the ex-legislator remarked that it was all in a light mood and nothing serious should be taken out of his comments. He then stated that Congress will win all five Lok Sabha seats in the state as there is a pro-Congress wave, with record work being done in a short span of chief minister's tenure by Harish Rawat. “There is no presence of Modi wave, which is just a hype generated by BJP via social media and advertising agencies. The reality is that Congress will again be at the Centre, as it has the experience of running a coalition-led government for full five years,” said Kishore, ex-legislator from Tehri Assembly segment. When contacted Raj Kumar, media planner for BJP candidate in Haridwar Lok Sabha, termed Kishore Upahdyaya's remarks as uncalled for and in sync with BJP’s ideology of ''snooping into the personal lives of Congress leaders,'' as they had nothing in terms of development and vision to garner voters' attention. |

Ex-Brig Barthwal contests from Haridwar as Independent
Haridwar, April 29 Be it former Union ministers Jaswant Singh, Major General (retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh or former Garhwal parliamentarian Lieut Gen (retd) Tej Pal Singh Rawat, all of them have fared extremely well in politics and governance. Taking inspiration from these ex-Army personnel-turned-politicians, an Independent candidate, Brig (retd) Gobind Prashad Barthwal, is contesting from Haridwar parliamentary constituency. Awarded with Vashisth Seva Medal by the President of India, Barthwal is giving nightmares to BJP and Congress candidates as there is a substantial number of Army personnel and their families in the constituency. Last time the BJP had bagged the highest number of service votes owing to BC Khanduri then being the Chief Minister of the state, who campaigned extensively for party candidate Swami Yatindranand Giri. But now as Khanduri is contesting from Pauri Garhwal Lok Sabha seat ,facing a tough battle with Congress candidate Harak Singh Rawat. Brigadier (retd) Gobind Prasad Barthwal probably will get away with a major chunk of Army votes. A confident Barthwal is canvassing directly with the voters, who are getting impressed with his vision, thinking and experience. “As an Independent I don't have to tow a certain party ideology. So what all I convey or share with voters is what I am. Corruption is the core issue apart from basic facilities like health ,education and a separate Himalayan policy for Uttarakhand,'' said Barthwal, who took part in twin Indo-Pak wars of 1965,1971 and 1999 Kargil semi-war. Hailing from Pauri Garhwal ,Barthwal decided not to contest from his home town seat as already there is an Army background candidate in Khanduri ,while in Haridwar no candidate in the past few elections hailed from the forces. “Haridwar is a multi-cultural city ,where diverse people mutually live together, while round the year people from across the shores come here to take a dip in the holy Ganga and for rituals. Also ,a substantial number of Army background people live here, whose support made me confident to contest the parliamentary elections for the first time,” said Gobind Barthwal. Shikha Rawat, a home maker resident of Vivek Vihar Colony, said that it was good for democracy that people like Gobind Prasad Barthwal and Indian Police Service cadre ex DGP Kanchan Bhattacharya are contesting the elections. |

Govt committed to welfare of hill people, says Pradeep Tamta
Pithoragarh, April 29 “Despite allegations that I was not present in the constituency in the last five years, I am well acquainted with all my voters as I have visited them at least one in a year in the past five years,” clarified Pradeep Tamta to this correspondent who accompanied him from Baram to Didihat. Besides highlighting the achievements of Chief Minister Harish Rawat during his two months’ tenure before the imposition of election code of conduct in the state, Tamta mostly talked about the achievements of UPA government in the last 10 years. “Our victory, which is sure this time, will be due to developmental works done by UPA government in the country along with the work done by the state Chief Minister Harish Rawat,” said Tamta. Beginning from Baram town, which is a stronghold of Congress MLA Harish Dhami, who is considered close to the Chief Minister, Tamta drove straight to Dharchula, where a large number of Congress workers were waiting for him . “The voters in the disaster-affected area of Dharchula are pleased with the generosity shown by the Chief Minister towards their permanent settlement. The government is committed to providing all essential facilities to the people residing in higher altitude villages,” said Tamta, after addressing a well attended meeting . “ The youths in villages are coming to us for jobs. Wherever we have gone to campaign or to meet the people in the last five years, we have one answer for them that besides creating industrial jobs at SIDCUL, situated at various places in the state, the Chief Minister has plans to strengthen hill agriculture and traditional crafts to provide more village level jobs to the youths, who are migrating from the hill villages in search of jobs,” said Tamta. Reaching Jauljibi town in the evening , Congress candidate Pradeep Tamta is surrounded by disaster-affected villagers demanding safety wall along the river Kali, so that they could be safe during the coming monsoon season . “Money worth Rs 600 crore has already been sanctioned by the Chief Minister for this work but the work could not be started due to the election code of conduct. The government is committed to complete the work before monsoon this year,” Tamta assured the agitating villagers. “ People in other areas of the constituency mostly come for the basic infrastructural needs,'' said Tamta. Pradeep Tamta , after addressing election meetings at Jauljibi, Askot and Ogla, reached Didihat town for night halt to start his campaign afresh the next day. The people in and around Didihat town met him during the night to demand separate district status for
