Harish Rawat seeks votes for his development works
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, April 26
Chief Minister Harish Rawat addressed election meetings at the Shiv Moorti square and Jwalapur areas here today and sought votes for Congress candidate from the Haridwar parliamentary constituency Renuka Rawat in the name of development works done by him as local MP.

Harish Rawat said during his tenure as MP the Haridwar constituency had witnessed large scale development. He was happy to see a good gathering at all meetings

He citied various projects like ESIC Hospital, medical college, setting up of the National Disaster Response Force battalion, Sugar Cane Research Centre, National Highway Project and optimum use of MPLAD funds to support his claims of large scale development of Haridwar. He said more development projects would be implemented in the Haridwar constituency if Renuka wins the elections.

He said development of any constituency required time, long-term planning and visionary public representatives. "Haridwar is known for the Ganga and its religious-spiritual ethos. The state government is committed to developing the holy city into a world class industrial hub. The Piran Kaliyar shrine is also located here and people belonging to different sects and religions live in harmony in the constituency," he added.

He denied that there was no impact of BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in Uttarakhand. He said in comparison to the much-hyped Gujarat model of development, his government’s Uttarakhand model was far better and realistic.

The Chief Minister said the Congress would replicate its success story of the last Lok Sabha elections and win all five Lok Sabha seats in the state once again. For the first time in two decades the Congress won the Haridwar seat when he won with a record margin of 1,27,000 votes in 2009. "There is a Congress wave in the state," he added.

Harish Rawat got an overwhelming response from at minority community-dominated Jwalapur. He visited some houses of the Muslims and shared sweets with them.

He assured them of addressing their problems and cited various social welfare schemes and projects being carried out by the Congress-led government at the Centre and in the state to seek their votes for Renuka.

Cong raising NRHM, Kumbh scams to get political mileage: Balraj Pasi
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, April 26
The BJP has questioned the timing and motive of the Congress and Chief Minister Harish Rawat for suggesting a CBI probe into the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) medicine scam and the Mahakumbh scam when the Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held in the state on May 7.

BJP coordinator for the Haridwar Lok Sabha seat and state spokesperson Bal Raj Pasi said the NRHM scam, which took place when Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was Chief Minister, was in fact the handiwork of health officials and Nishank had no involvement in it.

He said Harish Rawat had been raising the Mahakumbh Mela scam issue time and again as his wife Renuka Rawat is the Congress candidate from Haridwar.

“We are banking on development works carried out by the BJP government under chief ministers Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri and Ramesh Pokrhiyal Nishank. In comparison, the Congress-led governments headed by former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and Harish Rawat are way behind as they have no vision of development,” said Bal Raj, two-time parliamentarian from the Nainital parliamentary constituency.

Pasi denied that Hardiwar (city) legislator Madan Kaushik supporters were unhappy over the ticket allotment to Nishank and said the local MLA, who is a state election campaign member, was on a tour to other constituencies along with Munna Singh Chauhan and Ajay Bhatt.

“As he was on a state tour, he couldn’t give sufficient time to campaign for Nishank. But now you will see Kaushik at the helm of affairs. All party workers and leaders are united to ensure that our candidates win the maximum seats in the state. The BJP has been a cadre-based disciplined party where dynastic politics or factionalism doesn’t work,” said Pasi, who had defeated Congress stalwart Narayan Dutt Tiwari in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. It was this defeat that proved costly for Tiwari as he was among the candidates for the Prime Minister's post after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi at Sri Perumbudur in 1991.

“That was a major victory for the BJP as the lotus bloomed for the first time in the Nainitial constituency. Tiwari had never lost the election till then but with the love of party workers and public I won the seat," said Pasi, who later lost to Tiwari in the 1996 and 1999 LS elections.

Neglected since Independence, Almora villagers to vote for road
BD Kasniyal

Pithoragarh, April 26
Fed up with the pace of migration from their villages due to lack of road and electricity, villagers in the Almora parliamentary constituency have now taken up a slogan “Sadak do vote lo" (give road, take vote) for the Lok Sabha elections as political parties approach them for votes.

Youths of Dungri village in Champawat district have refused to live without a road and electricity. "Our last generation people were convinced that it was their destiny that they had to live without a road in the village, which is situated at a peak that could be reached by traversing a 5 km steep trek, but we think that it was due to the negligent attitude of the public representatives that we were still deprived of a road, electricity and other basic facilities even 66 years after Independence," says Kundan Singh, a villager who has formed a group to press the candidates for the construction of a 5 km-long road to their village.

The youths say that due to lack of road half of the population of Dungri village has migrated to other places. "We reach our village after traversing a 5 km steep trek. Our children also face the same problem as the primary school in the village has not been upgraded and the secondary school is situated 5 km away," says Kundan Singh.

The youths from interior Binsar, Kanayari and Simalgoth villages in the Chaukhutia block of Almora district have also decided to bargain for roads in lieu of votes this election. The people are living in acute poverty due to lack of infrastructure facilities in their villages. "Over 40 families of Simalgoth village are compelled to live without electricity and road. They have to walk 10 km from Basarkhet to reach their village as the administration has dug up the road," says Puran Singh, a resident of Binsar village.

The youths have formed groups in every neglected village and have decided to vote only for that candidate who will convince them on their demand of road and electricity.

"Solarlights given to 35 families of Binsar village by a former MLA have stopped functioning due to old batteries," says Puran Singh.
