Another candidate withdraws papers
Jalandhar, April 12 Interestingly, kite symbol, which was kept as a free symbol despite People's Party of Punjab's representation of reserving it, was today allotted to an independent candidate Darshan Nahar. The party's spokesperson, Dr Navjot Dahiya, said: "Manpreet Badal is contesting on the hand symbol of Congress. Even as our party is not recognised, still we had given a representation to the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, to keep it reserved. But they perhaps chose to give it out as a free symbol". Other than SAD, Congress, BSP and AAP candidates, Subhash Gorra of Shiv Sena has got a bow and an arrow symbol. The symbol of a ceiling fan has gone to Jarnail Singh of Bharti Jan Surakhya Party, table to Tara Singh Gill of BSP (Ambedkar), bed to Paramjit Kumar of Bahujan Mukti Party, cricketer to Vijay Hans of Democratic Bharti Samaj Party, flute to independent candidate Ajay Kumar Bhagat, hockey and ball to independent candidate Amit Jassi, television to independent candidate Kamal Thapar, cake to independent Kuldeep Kumar, table lamp to KK Sabharwal, gas cylinder to Jagan Nath Bajwa, stool to Tarsem Peter, autorickshaw to Dharminder, bucket to Nirmal Singh, battery torch to Manjit Kaur (wife of Sukhdev Singh), sewing machine to Manjit Kaur (wife of Sukhwinder Singh, the candidate is a tailor), bat to Luv Kishore, candles to Vijay Kumar and pressure cooker to Vivek. Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Varun Roojam said that the symbols had been allotted after the candidates had given their first and second choices. He said the allotment had been done in the presence of the General Observer Ateek Ahmed. |
Tale of the modest candidates
Jalandhar, April 12 Meanwhile, even as the city's Congress (Santokh Singh Chaudhary) and SAD (Pawan Kumar Tinu) candidates are big guns with sizeable assets, the city also fields some humble names with some of the most modest assets in the polls, some of whom have their roots deep in either the people's movement or poverty. Tarsem Peter of the CPI (ML) New Democracy is one such humble candidate from the constituency with merely Rs 11,029 in cash in hand and a five marla oiece of ancestral land at Udhowal village. His total moveable and immovable assets amounting to Rs 3.61 lakh, Peter filed his nominations riding a bike borrowed from his friends to the DC office. While Peter has Rs 10,000 cash in hand, he has Rs 1,029 as bank deposits and Rs 3.5 lakh worth of ancestral property. His wife has Rs 40,000 as bank deposits. Forty nine- year-old Peter, a candidate of the CPI (ML) New Democracy, was born in a modest home. His father Darshan Ram, a labourer, instilled the first sparks of a spirit of questioning in him. Getting associated with the farmers’ movement for the first time during his stay at Assam Ram came back to Punjab to wholeheartedly support the farmers' movement in the state. Growing up in such an envioronemnt, Peter too, first got associated with student politics and then went on to become a vital member of the Pendu Mazdoor Union in Punjab. Many a time dubbed as a man with his own (hidden) agenda, he shrugs off criticism saying his prime motive is to fight for the people and getting land back to those whom it belongs. "Lands of the poor are grabbed, farmers languish while the hooligans grow rich. Doing away with that gross injustice is our main motive and I shall always keep working for it. Dubbing the Congress, SAD, BJP and even AAP as parties wholeheartedly in individualistic politics, he says his party will empower the people and get them rid of banes like drugs, land grab and corruption," he said. Barring Peter, Jalandhar also has other modest candidates that includes Democratic Party of India (Ambedkar) Kamal Thapar (total assets — of him and spouse — Rs 3, 33,850) and Jarnail Singh a retired civil engineer fielded by the Bharti Jan Suraksha Party with merely Rs 30,000 as his total assets (though he says he also has a stake in ancestral property at Sadhewal village, which he shares with his brothers) is a self- made man who overcame many odds to receive education. He says he knows better about the needs of the poor than the other candidates. Vijay Kumar, a carpenter with merely Rs 22,820 as his total assets and Love Kishore, a daily wage painter with merely Rs 48,400 as his (and his spouse's) total assets, are two other (independent) candidates who shall be roughing it out in a campaign marked by powerful adversaries |
Complaint against admn for allotting video surveillance contract without due process
Jalandhar, April 12 Balwinder Singh, a resident of Pajian village of Kapurthala, has said that the contract for the job had been given without following any tendering process to a person recommended by an Akali leader of the town. He has alleged that such a move had been especially taken to benefit the ruling alliance so that the videographer works at their whims and fancies deleting all such footages from record to do away with any evidence of violation against them. He said that he was doing photography and videography in Kapurthala as well as the neighbouring areas, he came to know about the contract for coverage of election movements of all the parties under the supervision of Returning Officer or under the supervision of the nodal officer. He has written, "In order to get the contract, I contacted the office of Deputy Commissioner and enquired regarding the procedure for allotment of the contract but to my surprise, the staff of the SDM office informed me that the contract had already been given to the person for whom an Akali leader made recommendations." He said that he enquired regarding the publication or calling of tender and found that no such procedure had been followed and thus returned empty- handed. He has mentioned that it had come to his notice that a person from Kapurthala had already been given contract for video coverage to the political rallies, static teams and with the election staff and he is also giving bills for the said coverage and the amount is being regularly paid to him. "It is important to mention here that such payment is without following any legal procedure as no tender has been called. "Moreover, the Election Tehsildar is fixing the rates for such coverage on his own without following any legal procedure. It is important to mention here that it is being done on the behalf of the ruling party, even deleting the objectionable clips on the SAD-BJP leaders' diktat so as to leave no proof of violation against the ruling party,” he has claimed. He has demanded necessary direction to the Deputy Commissioner, Election Tehsildar and the SDM at the district level as well as block levels and the officials concerned at district to follow the legal procedure for the allotment of contract of video coverage by calling tenders without any pressure of the ruling party. He has also sought a necessary inquiry regarding the allotment of video coverage to the person and the payment made and getting transfers done of the persons responsible for the same. DC-cum-DEO DS Mangat said that the minimum rate was fixed as quoted by various photographers. "We even compared it with the one fixed by the neighbouring districts. So far, the total expenditure incurred is just Rs 10,000. The complaint has come just because of rivalry between two main photographers here," he said. |

Gurdas Maan releases music of his upcoming film ‘Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar’
Jalandhar, April 12 Speaking on the occasion, Gurdas Mann said it was a family oriented emotional drama, which would deliver a message about the importance of family. The film has eight songs composed by Jatinder Shah and sung by Gurdas Maan, Jassi Gill, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal and Harshdeep Kaur. “It was the idea of Manjit to make a film on this subject. He has produced and directed quality films with late Manoj Punj, director, and Majoj Punj,” said Gurdas Maan. Speaking on the present scenario of Punjabi film industry, he said Punjabi films were doing a good business these days. As far as subject of the films was concerned, he said it was good, but could be improved a lot. Manjit Maan said the film was a joint venture of Unisys Infosolutions and Sai Production, made with a budget of more than Rs 5 crore. “The reason we have come out with a film after a span of three years is we believe in quality work. Apart from this, we have been accumulating funds to start the same project”, she added. She said piracy was a major setback to the Punjabi film industry. Goonda Act had been implemented in some southern states to check the menace. NRI Sabha comes to aid of poor parents
Jalandhar, April 12 Sukhwinder Singh (34), passed away in Lebanon following some illness on March 28. He was reportedly without work there for some time with none of his family members around. The Foreign Ministry had contacted the NRI Sabha regarding the matter on the basis of the deceased’s passport number. Chairman of the sabha Jasvir Singh Gill said the family was located in Jalandhar. He said since no one from the family, including his aged father Satnam, could bear the expenses to go to Lebanon, he contacted Ram Joy, second secretary, counsellor and the Indian embassy in Lebanon, to seek help in bringing back the body. He said the Lebanon government had agreed to send the body to Delhi by the next week. As Gill expressed grief with the family, parents of the deceased thanked him for coming to their aid. Kanti Mohan, sarpanch of the village, said the poor elderly man had been feeling helpless as he had no financial resources at his disposal. “They could not even arrange for their ill son to get back in time. They had been demanding that they at least be able to see his body,” said the sarpanch. |
Bus terminal sans fire safety equipment
Jalandhar, April 12 Out of the three fire extinguishers installed at the terminal, one has been missing since long. Hose pipes have also been missing in some cases. Ironically, the condition has been the same for the last couple of years. The management has failed to upgrade or rectify faults in the fire equipment. Eatable and other shops on the premises of the bus stand also do not take care of fire safety measures. “The contract to manage bus stand has been given to a private company. I think they don’t follow the regulations properly. They want to save money, that is why they turn a blind eye towards repair of mandatory things. This is not the case of bus stand only. Many other places are in a similar condition. There must be a special budget to repair the fire safety equipment,” said Jai Nath, an elderly commuter. Speaking to The Tribune, VK Sharma, Senior Manager of Welspun, the company entrusted with the job of managing the bus stand, said they had removed the pipes because some drug addicts had stolen the pipes in the past incidents. These thieves had been caught and handed over to the police, he added. Sharma said, “We will fix pipes when a fire incident takes place.” He said despite several complaints to the police about such thefts at the bus stand, nothing much had been done. However, their security personnel had been taking care of the matter, he added. |
Police fail to nab accused
Nikhil Bhardwaj Tribune News Service
Jalandhar April 12 Kamal alias Nikka Baba was attacked by two miscreants on April 4 at his house in Sikandpur village. Prior to this attack, Baba was also attacked by some unidentified miscreants in January this year. He had then complained to the Adampur police, but the police did not take his complaint seriously. Following the attack, Adampur SHO Gurmit Singh and ASI of Alawalpur police post Raguvir Singh were suspended for not investigating the complaint regarding the first attack. Paramjit Singh, SHO of Adampur police station, said raids were being conducted at the suspected hideouts of the accused, but the police was yet to nab them. The residents of Sikandpur village had also alleged that the rural police had failed to take timely action against the assailants. “The rural police seemed hand in glove with the assailants because it has not investigated the first attack on Baba. Had the police taken the first complaint seriously, the latest attack could have been avoided. It is not only the failure of Adampur police station SHO and ASI Alawalpur police post, but also of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jalandhar, Jasprit Singh Sidhu, who heads the district police. He should also be held responsible for negligence in the case,” said a villager. |

Rajat Kumar Mohindru, Jalandhar Keep govt offices clean
On my visit to the district office in Jalandhar, I was surprised to see cleanliness on the premises. The staff members under the Deputy Commissioner are doing an appreciable work. Floors were clean and it looked like a private corporate office. The motto work is worship applies well to the employees of this office. Other state government offices should emulate the functioning of the district office so as to compete with the corporate world. BN
