Police yet to get lead in murder case
Victim not revealing identity of alleged assailants, say cops
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, April 5
The Adampur police is yet to get any vital lead in the last night’s murder case in which a woman was shot dead by two armed assailants at Sikandpur village. Special police teams were formed to nab the culprits.

Kamlesh, alias Nikka Baba, and his sister-in-law Zareena were attacked by two armed assailants last night in which Zareena was killed.

Sources said Baba was also attacked by some unknown miscreants on January 18 this year. Then Baba had alleged that a bike-borne armed miscreant had tried to kill him, but he had a miraculous escape. He had then also complained to the Adampur police.

Now the victim is suspecting that the same unknown miscreants, who had attacked him in the past, could have attacked him this time as well.

After that January 18 attack, ASP Adampur Soni had said that Baba's case was doubtful as he had not sustained any bullet injuries. He had also not revealed the identification details of the accused.

A senior police official said Baba was running a dera at his house in Sikandpur village and he used to promise magical remedies to his followers. The police were now suspecting that Baba was attacked by some of his followers after his remedies didn’t work, official added.

“We suspect that Baba was attacked by those persons to whom he had promised some magical remedies. We are considering this one of the main reasons of the attack, but the police are working on other angles also to get a lead in the case,” a police official said, adding that the police were also suspecting that Baba was aware of the persons who attacked him, but he was not ready to divulge any identification details to the police.

Jalandhar, April 5
A pulse polio drive will be held in the city from April 6 to 8. The drive will focus on children of the migratory workers living in the district. The teams would visit all brick-kilns, labour colonies, factories, huts and slum areas to immunise the children.

RL Bassan, Civil Surgeon, said around 1,52,219 children would be administered the drops for which 1,181 teams had been constituted. He said although, the country had been declared a polio-free nation, Punjab was still vulnerable to its outbreak due to its proximity with Pakistan, one of the biggest polio reservoirs in the world. The Pakistani polio virus had affected at least five countries in the past 23 months, and had become a threat to other countries.

India has recently celebrated its victory over polio - completing three years without any case of the debilitating infection - the country has been declared a polio-free nation by the World Health Organisation (WHO). India introduced the oral polio vaccine in 1985 in the Universal Immunisation Programme in the backdrop of over 2,00,000 cases of polio annually (as per estimates of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics). In 1995, the first national polio immunization campaign was held.

Exorbitant charges by rickshaw-pullers

Its not easy to check the charges which rickshaw pullers demand for the service they provide.

In a recent visit to the city railway station, I had to go to Mohalla Gobindgarh which was not more than1 km. Most of the rickshaw pullers refused to go, while others demanded Rs 30-40 for the same.

It was unjustified demand by them. They authorities should adopt some measures to check such exorbitant charges. Every rickshaw puller should have a unique number and licence. Secondly, people should be provided a helpline number if any rickshaw puller refuses to provide the service. Rickshaw-pullers should be provided licences.

Pungav Sharma, Jalandhar
