Don’t free Rajiv Gandhi killers, SC tells Jaya govt
New Delhi, February 20
The Supreme Court today directed the Tamil Nadu Government not to release the three life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case till further orders. A three-member Bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam passed the order on a petition filed by the Centre objecting to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s hasty move to release them after their death penalty was commuted to life sentence by the Supreme Court on February18.

Parliament approved the creation of Telangana as country's 29th state on Thursday with the Rajya Sabha clearing the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill by voice vote amid ugly scenes and frequent adjournments of the House. After a five-hour noisy debate on the contentious legislation, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced a six-point development package for the successor states of Andhra Pradesh.

Sop spree: Haryana to regularise illegal colonies
Chandigarh, February 20
The Hooda government is set to regularise illegal residential colonies that had come into existence by January 1, 2014. A Bill to regularise such colonies will be brought in the Budget session of the Vidhan Sabha beginning tomorrow. The move is likely to benefit several lakh residents of hundreds of illegal colonies that had come up between June 30, 2009, and January 1, 2014.

The state government is reportedly concerned that once the model code of conduct comes into force, the Election Commission (EC) will recommend a DGP of its own choice, so it is going to ask Saini to proceed on leave.


Facebook to acquire WhatsApp for $19 bn
New York, February 20
Facebook will acquire popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion in a cash-and-stock deal, bolstering the social networking giant’s presence in mobile communications through its largest-ever acquisition. The hefty transaction—that includes $12 billion worth of Facebook shares, $4 billion in cash and $3 billion in restricted stock units — will boost the world’s biggest social network by adding the 450 million users of WhatsApp, including a significant number of youth.
