Snoopgate: Centre orders judicial probe New Delhi, December 26 The Bharatiya Janata Party called the move “political vindictiveness” indicating it could be challenged in court. The Congress-led UPA government ignored opposition from the BJP and the Gujarat Government to order a probe even after the Modi Government set up a similar inquiry in the state following allegations that a young woman was spied upon during 2009. Following reports by news portals, the Congress sought to build a controversy through its women’s wing on the grounds of violation of privacy of a woman and misuse of official machinery. The Congress held protests in several parts of the country and petitioned the Centre to act. “The Cabinet has approved a proposal to set up a Commission of Inquiry under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952, to look into the incidents of physical/electronic surveillance in the states of and the National Capital Territory of Delhi, allegedly without authorisation,” an official release said.Sources said a retired Judge of the Supreme Court is likely to head the probe and will be asked to submit the report within three months. Panel to look into Virbhadra case too
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde rejected charges of political vendetta, saying the action was based on facts and ‘people’s wish’ The panel will cover all cases of snooping in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi HP CM Virbhadra Singh was allegedly snooped on by the previous BJP government when he was not in office
Gujarat’s contention overruled by order The Centre's decision overrules the contention of the Gujarat Government that the matter was a state subject and that it has already appointed a commission to probe it.
