A few days ago, the JAC members met Joshi and the Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) for cooperation at Krishan Dev Bhandari’s residence in the presence of MC Commissioner Manpreet Singh Chhatwal. City police to have separate investigation wing
Jalandhar, December 13 From the next week, all the 14 police stations in the city will have a separate investigation wing other than the routine law and order wing. In addition, there will be a quick response team stationed at the police station, division number 4, consisting of six members, including four constables, one assistant sub-inspector and one photographer. They will quickly reach the crime spots where incidents like murder, suicide, robbery and theft take place. Such teams would be deputed round-the-clock on day and night shifts, said an Assistant Commissioner of Police. The kit to be given to the team included tapes to cordon off the scene of crime, powerful search lights, torch lights, battery, and scientific tools to gather traces of finger prints, foot prints and materials to pack them well. It will also include tools to collect samples of body fluids such as sweat, blood or sperm available at the crime scene. The kits will help the the police personnel in collecting evidences, both forensic and medical without tampering with them. The police commissionerate is still in the process of buying equipment, including special jackets for the team, and is likely to announce the new formation in the next few days. Commissioner of Police Ishwar Singh said preparations were on. “We may launch the new team by the next week”, he said. The police are currently facing a lot of difficulty in investigating the crime as vital trails of evidences often got mixed up due to the lack of carelessness on the part of the cops in protecting it. In criminal cases, gathering of evidences fast with precision and without tampering with them is of paramount importance. |
MC gets tough on defacement of public property, may slap fine on violators
Jalandhar, December 13 While a similar action was initiated two years ago, it was pursued only for a few weeks with no follow-up action further. Though orders of the MC Commissioner against such violations have been put up on dispaly ay various points in the city, violators have been taking the advantage of the laxity on the part of the civic body. "These illegal hoardings, cut-outs and posters pasted at various traffic points trouble commuters besides being an eyesore. We have to stop it at the earliest. We have decided to levy a hefty fine and to initiate a legal action against the offenders," said Manpreet Singh Chhatwal, Commissioner, MC. He said he would take up the issue in the next House meeting of the MC. He said they had already taken action against two such violators. On February 14 this year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court also took note of illegal hoardings, including unipoles and wall rap, saying that such advertisements cause hindrance to commuters. However, the MC's enforcement wing never showed any seriousness in removing them. Major areas of the city, including the BMC Chowk, has been defaced by pasting of illegal posters on pillars of the flyover, causing distraction to commuters besides defacing the heart of the city. Posters regarding religious activities, festivals and housing schemes have been pasted everywhere in the city. The MC is also planning to run a week-long drive against such illegal advertisements all in the city soon. |
After kabaddi cup, officials remain occupied with other engagements
Jalandhar, December 13 While SDM Nakodar Hardeep S Dhaliwal and TK Goyal, Deputy Director, Local Government, have been assigned the duty for the final match of the kabaddi cup at Ludhiana tomorrow, four PCS officials of the region had been asked to go to Umra Jatti village of Tarn Taran, the native place of the Chief Minister of Pakistan Punjab, Shahbaz Shariff. He is expected to visit the village during his current visit. The officials - ADC (G) Jalandhar Pritam Singh, SDM Kapurthala Darbara Singh, ADC (G) Hoshiarpur Harminder Singh and CEO of Jang-e-Azadi Memorial Vinay Bublani - have been asked to make arrangements for the visit of Shariff there on Sunday. Once through with these arrangements, the officials have another uphill task of making arrangements for the start of a new project of the school for meritorious students at Kapurthala Road on December 18. The Chief Minister, Parkash Singh, Badal is scheduled to attend the function. The officials will also have to make arrangements for the NRI
Conclave, which is scheduled to be held in the city on January 10 and 11next year. All such arrangements for political events have been leaving little time for the officials to attend to the problems of the public. Almost all SDMs have hundreds of claims pending regarding the Atta-Dal Scheme in their offices. An administrative official said, “There is such a backlog of work in my office for the past one week that I would not be able to clear it in the weekend. So far, I have only been able to attend my office only for an hour or two for the past one week." Even visitors at the Revenue and Transport Department offices had a hellish experience as their work could not be done owing to unavailability of tehsildars, naib-tehsildars, District Transport Officer and other staff. |

‘Council to promote art in state interiors’
Jalandhar, December 13 Harjinder Kaur said: "It has to be understood that culture usually isn't the prime factor on the agenda of governments and with the budget constraints, there is need for individuals to take up initiatives in their region." "The Cultural Affairs Minister is keen on the promotion of arts across the state. He is very open about extending all kinds of support to artists," she said. While budget constraints are also major snags in functioning of Virsa Vihars, Jalandhar being a vital example, Kaur said, "Right now, it is not possible to arrange cultural grants for all districts and Virsa Vihars but we will provide backing in the form of art activities. In terms of monetary backing, we need local artists to initiate efforts and sustain art in their areas." Speaking about the council's plan to give a fillip to the works of regional artists, she said, "It's true that the concentration of all major art academies at Chandigarh leaves a lot to be done for artists in state districts and villages. That is why the council will be moving to interiors of the state and will be utilising resources of artists and institutions in various pockets across the state to identify and promote regional art. Both creative and traditional arts will be promoted. Workshops, exhibitions and other kind of art activities will be held. We will interact with budding artists and promote the arts of veterans." CCTV cameras at Suwidha Centre
Jalandhar, December 13 On the priority list of the administration is the shifting of few counters such as those for getting new learners' driving license from the main Suwidha Centre building to an adjoining new patwarkhana building till the existing building is extended to accommodate more visitors. It has been observed that the maximum footfall at the Suwidha Centre is for the license applications, who stand in long queues for the whole day to get their work done. There are quite a few other problems attached with this service. The employees of the centre have recently found out that as many as 40 forged medical certificates were attached with the documents by the applicants. Now, the documents will be checked at the patwarkhana. There have been complaints of forged stamps of doctors used by the agents at their own end for issuing certificates. In another complaint, Motor Vehicle Inspector Davinder Singh today alleged that his signatures were forged by some agents on fitness certificates issued for vehicles. Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam said he would look into such complaints on priority basis. The DC is getting as many as 25 CCTV cameras installed at all the offices. The cameras have already been installed at all counters of the DTO. The cameras are also being installed in Suwidha Centre, fard kendras and tehsils to ensure that the public is attended well by the staff. |
Talks fail, PIMS docs continue strike
Jalandhar, December 13 A meeting of doctors with managing director of the institute Jaspal Singh Dhesi, which took place at the institute here this afternoon, failed to bring any results. While doctors were assured that their pending salaries for the past five months (July to November) would be paid by December 20, the lack of trust among the doctors on the issue whether they would get the promised money, caused negotiations to fail. While doctors will continue to be on the indefinite strike. This is not the frist time this year that they are holding strike over non-payment of salaries. Before this, similar strikes have taken place in summer and October. The PIMS staff has also held strikes on similar issues in the month of December last year. Notably, there is also ire among doctors due to cheques - received by them in November for salaries of the months of July and August ? being dishonoured by banks. |
